Frequently Asked Questions for Year 7 Admission

What is the closing date for receipt of applications for Year 7?
All applications for entry into Year 7 in September 2012 must be received by 25th November 2011 at the latest.  After this date applications cannot be accepted.

What happens after I have returned my application form and fee?
You will receive an acknowledgement of your registration and your daughter will be entered for the entrance examination. We will also request a reference from the Head Teacher of your daughter's current school.

When is the Entrance Examination?
The Group 2 Entrance Examination will take place on Friday, 13 January 2012.   You must indicate on your application form the school where your daughter will be sitting the examination. This is essential to ensure that the necessary arrangements are made and so you receive the correct instructions for the examination day.

Does it matter where my daughter sits the examination?
No. It does not matter where you daughter sits the entrance examination.  All applications are treated equally irrespective of where the examination is sat.

What subjects will my daughter be tested on?
All applicants sit papers in English and Mathematics only.

Can I have copies of past examination papers?
We provide copies of English and Mathematics papers from the past three years. We also provide Sample Questions for English and Mathematics.  Please use the following link to download copies.  Past Examination papers

Can I make an application from abroad?
Yes. Applicants can apply from abroad and arrangements can be made for applicants to sit the entrance examination at their current school. There is an additional cost if this arrangement is requested. We encourage applicants from abroad to attend an interview at the school if it is possible.

Will my daughter have an interview?
All applicants for Year 7 entry will be invited to attend an interview.  Interviews will take place from 16 January to 3 February 2012. Each applicant has an interview of approximately 15 minutes. At least one parent is required to attend and have an opportunity to meet the Headmistress and discuss their daughter's application. The date of your daughter's interview will be sent to you by the Registrar in December 2011. No special preparation is required and there is no need to bring anything to the interview.

Do you offer Scholarships and Bursaries?
All applicants who sit the entrance examination are automatically considered for an Academic Scholarship (10% of the fees).   You do not need to make a separate application for an Academic Scholarship.

If you wish to apply for a Music Scholarship, you must complete the Music Scholarship Application form in addition to the Year 7 Application form. All applicants who meet the published criteria will be invited to attend a music audition.

Bursaries can be awarded up to 100% of tuition fees on entry at both Year 7 and Year 12. They can also be awarded during a pupil's time at Channing if personal circumstances change. In order to assess financial criteria, applicants will be asked to complete a Statement of Financial Circumstances.  When considering applications the full family circumstances, not just income, will be considered.

Are applicants with a sibling already at Channing always offered a place? Siblings of current pupils are given careful consideration but they are not given priority or automatically offered a place.  Each applicant is considered on her own individual merit.

When will we know the result of my daughter's application?
A letter will be posted to you on Thursday 23 February 2012 with the result of your application.  If your daughter is placed on the Waiting List, information about her position on the list is not given. All girls on the Waiting List are considered to have qualified for entry should a vacancy arise.

How long do I have to decide whether to accept the offer of a place?
You have to accept or decline an offer by 12 noon on Wednesday 7 March 2012 which is normally at least a week after the results have been sent to parents.  If you do not respond before this deadline it will be assumed that you do not want the place and it will be offered to an applicant on the Waiting List.
