AS
English Literature is a very popular choice at A level in Channing and we are proud of the success rate we enjoy at AS and A2. Students are taught in seminar groups and lessons are discussion based. Most students opt to proceed to A2 after completing the AS.
We teach the Wjec board at AS. This course puts emphasis on the students’ creative and independent responses to texts. It includes as part of its coursework component a creative reading unit, in which girls write a creative piece as a result of wider reading of stimulus texts and produce a commentary of their own work. This challenges our students to take themselves seriously as writers and examine the craft of writing in an exciting way. It marries very well with the writer visit programme, which is an important aspect of the Literary Society.
Girls will also study, as part of this course, the work of two poets (this year anthologies by Philip Larkin and Dannie Abse); Pride and Prejudice; I Capture the Castle; A Room with a View; and Arcadia.
We hope to include a non-curriculum based study of Othello at the end of the Summer, as preparation and induction into A2.
