Physical Education

Physical Education Philosophy and Approach

A wide variety of sports are available to students including the traditional such as, netball, hockey, rounders, tennis and athletics.  But there are also a number of other sports and physical activities such as gymnastics, dance, badminton, volleyball, pilates, cross-country running and health-related fitness classes. These ensure that all students will find a comprehensive range of learning opportunities for personal growth and the development of skills.

Students also develop leadership skills, cooperative strategies, self management and outsetting skills. Girls in Year 11, 12 and 13 have the opportunity to experience an even wider variety of physical activities, including, yogalates, outdoor games, use of the fitness suite, high impact aerobics, street dance, fencing (with the female British number one) and military fitness. We also offer, off-site activities exclusively available to Year 12 and 13 girls, including ice skating (coached by a top professional), golf (coached by a professional), Climbing, horse-riding and bowling.

Channing's first Senior School sports day was held on 11 June at Parliament Hill Fields Athletic Track. The sun shone, the rain stayed away and the girls in Years 7 to 10 enjoyed a splendid morning of field and track events, including the 100 and 200 metres individual and relay, shot and high jump. Girls competed for their houses - Waterlow, Sharpe, Spears and Goodwin.

The overall winners of the House competition were Waterlow. Many congratulations to them and to all the competitors!

Ski Trip

During the half term break, a group of year 10s and 12s went skiing in Leysin, Switzerland.

The instructors were really helpful and we all improved on our skiing ability.
It snowed heavily during the week, so the surface was great to ski on.

In the evenings we went to the cinema, swimming and ice-skatng, with the highlight being tobogganing!

Barbados

Lara Pearson and Martha Williams in Year 11 write:

During the October half-term, Channing’s Netball team left behind the gloom of London for the blue skies and balmy climate of Barbados. Or so we thought at first, until we arrived in pouring rain!

Luckily, the weather cleared up and we were able to play four exciting matches against local teams around Barbados. To transport us to those matches, we had our very own and very special driver, Sheldon. Over the seven days, we visited the famous Sandy Lane beach, went on a catamaran and were able to touch and swim with turtles.

The A team won a gruelling match 16-12 and came very close on another occasion 11-9.

Overall, the trip was exciting, fun and really enjoyable. We all came back with suntans, happy smiles and memories and can’t wait for the next sports trip.
