Physical Education

Philosophy and Approach

The department aims to promote positive attitudes towards participation in Physical Activity and Sport.

Through the broad curriculum and extra curricular programme, we aim to encourage each pupil to develop their potential, whether at a recreational or competitive level.

Students also develop leadership skills, cooperative strategies, self management and outsetting skills. Girls in Year 11, 12 and 13 have the opportunity to experience an even wider variety of physical activities, including, yogalates, outdoor games, use of the fitness suite, high impact aerobics, street dance, fencing (with the female British number one) and military fitness. We also offer, off-site activities exclusively available to Year 12 and 13 girls, including ice skating (coached by a top professional), golf (coached by a professional), Climbing, horse-riding and bowling.

The curriculum encompasses a range of traditional sports, as well as fitness, outdoor and adventurous activities and aesthetics.

The games programme for years 11,12 and 13 offers pupils the opportunity to select from a wide range of activities including zumba, military fitness, yogalates, trampolining, horse riding, ice skating, rock climbing as well as traditional games such as netball. The programme aims to introduce pupils to news ways of exercising in order to promote lifelong participation.

Games fitness and aesthetics are all taught in depth throughout the idle school  and into year 10. PE activities include netball, hockey, basketball, gymnastics, tramolining, fitness, dance, badminton, volleyball, athletics, tennis and rounde

Bronze Duke of Edinburgh

Girls are introduced to Outdoor and Adventurous Activities. Pupils learn the skills necessary to undertake a self-sufficient expedition at Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Level (camp-craft, map and compass skills, navigation, route planning, cooking and first aid). Every summer year 9 travel to the New Forest to complete this expedition and to take part in numerous adventure activities. Girls then have the options to complete their bronze Duke of Edinburgh by completing an additional expedition and 3 months of a sport, skill and community service.

Extra Curricular

All pupils are encouraged to attend extra-curricular clubs at Channing. The Physical Education department provide a programme that caters for those girls interested in recreational sport and those girls who wish to represent the school at a competitive level.

Clubs include: netball, hockey, gymnastics, football, badminton, table tennis, cheerleading, rounders, tennis and athletics.

There are regular fixtures against other schools and Channing regularly enters county netball and borough athletics competitions.
