Politics at Channing
At Channing, Politics is offered in the Sixth Form for both AS and A2 level. The aim of the course is to introduce girls to the study of government: how it operates, how it is organised, how politicians are elected. We also consider the role of the government and its relationship with the electorate; how relevant are the political institutions at the heart of government?
KS5
The examination board for A Level Politics is Edexcel. At AS level, the focus is on contemporary British politics, including the role of political parties, Parliament, pressure groups and the European Union.
At A2 level, the girls study American politics, including political parties, civil rights, the role of Congress, the Supreme Court and the President. They also compare American and British political systems.
Outside the classroom
Channing is ideally situated close to the heart of the British political system - Westminster. Girls studying AS Politics start the course in September with a visit to the Houses of Parliament, where they meet and talk with an MP, have a tour of both Houses and learn about the traditions of Westminster.
Channing also has a Politics Society, where girls in both Years 12 and 13 meet in an informal setting to discuss important issues of the day.
The Politics Department also takes girls to Brussels to visit the European Parliament and to meet MEPs. We have also been fortunate to welcome a range of speakers to Channing, including a human rights judge, a leading barrister and a member of the House of Lords.
