Legacies

Leaving a Legacy
Leaving a gift to Channing in your Will offers you the opportunity to make a real difference to the school and to future generations of Channing girls. A legacy to Channing may satisfy a desire to give something back, which may not be possible in your lifetime.
If it is your wish, we can honour you by associating your name with a bursary or an enhanced school asset. In recognition of your pledge, you will become a member of our exclusive Channing Circle and be invited to a dedicated gathering each year.

Remembering Channing In Your Will
This is a step that needs to be considered in the light of your own personal circumstances and commitments. If you already have a Will, your bequest can easily be added as a Codicil. As Channing is a registered charity, any bequest would be free of Inheritance Tax.
1% Will make the difference
A former Channing teacher once asked an Old Girl, "How much of a part do you believe Channing played in helping you achieve all you have in life? 50%? 20%?... Surely 1%?
1% of your Estate, after specific responsibilities have been met (A residuary legacy), might just fund a scholarship, pitch, room or even a building named after you. If this is an area of interest, please contact the Development Department.

What different types of legacy are there?
We strongly recommend that you seek professional legal advice to ascertain the most appropriate decision for you.
1. A Pecuniary Bequest
This simple form of legacy involves you leaving a named amount of money to Channing School. (Please be aware that unless you update your Will inflation will erode the value of your gift over the years.)
2. A Residuary Bequest
This method allows you to protect the real value of your gift. It involves a percentage or fraction of your Estate being left to Channing, once all your specific bequests had been made.
3. A Reversionary Bequest
This is an attractive way of providing for your family first. It involves your Estate (or a percentage thereof) being held in trust, with the trustees being directed to pay its income to your spouse or relative during their lifetime. Only upon their death would Channing School benefit from your legacy.
4. A Conditional Bequest
This type of legacy would allow for a gift to be passed to Channing in the event that named beneficiaries to your estate predecease you.
5. A Specific Bequest
This type of gift can take any form. You can leave a specific asset or personal possession to Channing School, including shares, land, property, antiques, jewellery, musical instruments or other valuables.
