Fairseat News 2011 - 2012

Year 1 visit Bethnall Green Museum of Childhood

Year 1 enjoyed visiting the Museum of Childhood to investigate forces. They used magnets, wind, weights, solar power, battery power, pushes and pulls to move a variety of toys. Year 1 can now expertly explain how forces work. It is amazing what a day of play can teach you!

Year 5 Little Angel Puppet Workshop

Lucky Year 5 spent the day with The Little Angel Theatre Company who helped every pupil to make their own Victorian puppet based on characters from that era.

The Theatre workshop leaders were extremely inspiring and the results are fantastic. We now have a class collection of rich and poor Victorian characters including Dr Barnardo, climbing boys, parlour maids and of course, Queen Victoria herself. We are sure she would be most amused.

Nativity Play

Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 performed the annual Christmas play in the New Hall. Well done to all who were involved, it was a great success.

Music Assembly

During a special Music assembly, Fairseat and guests were treated to playing of an exceptionally high standard from pupils in Year 3  to Year 6.  The ever accomplished and enthusiastic Miss Pepper coordinated a concert to include music for violin, cello, double bass, clarinet, saxophone, flute and harp. It was very exciting for the Reception class to hear and see such a wide range of instruments. The musicians and their teachers should feel very proud indeed!

Year 3's Ancient Egyptian Workshop

Both Year 3 classes enjoyed travelling back in time to investigate life in Ancient Egypt, the focus of their History lessons. Their costumes were fantastic and their huge smiles and  colourful Egyptian styles created excitement and interest throughout the school.

Year Five's Bread Making Workshop

As part of their Design and Technology curriculum, Year 5 enjoyed a bread making workshop.  They investigated, tasted and created different types of bread and were lucky enough to take some dough home to bake too. According to the Year 5 class, they loved it!

Year Four's Boney Assembly

Year 4 presented an informative assembly about bones and the human body. As well as facts, they sang and told us some jokes too... Why was the skeleton sad? Because it had no body to dance with!  The Year 4 parents also enjoyed a bonus performance (excuse the pun)!

Warm October Fun!

Year One took advantage of the unseasonably hot autumn weather and took over the adventure playground for some fun in the sun.  The girls noted how they must have grown over the summer holiday as they could now hold the bars and ropes they had been unable to reach in Reception.

School Council

The delegates and secretaries from each class have been chosen and we look forward to another year of carefully considered discussion and debate concerning school issues.

Miss Tarr’s Busy Assembly

Miss Tarr had a busy assembly morning giving out School Council badges, Connie and William Bear and birthday stickers.  The first birthdays of this academic year were celebrated in fabulous Fairseat tradition with song and congratulations from the whole school.  Reception were delighted to win Connie Bear to be in their class all week and Year 6 were also proud winners of William Bear in Key Stage Two.

2010 - 2011

Sports Day Success

The sun shone for Fairseat as we undertook our annual Sports Day at Parliament Hill Fields Athletics Track. The girls ran, the parents cheered and everyone was a winner just by taking part. Of course, there had to be a winning team and this year it was Yellow Team. The Fairseat athletes and fantastic team spirit made this day so successful. Congratulations are due to the hardworking PE department who not only prepared the girls so well, they organised a very slick and sunny day too!

Year One Dinosaur Assembly

Year One presented an assembly on dinosaurs to Fairseat. Bursting with information, poetry and song, the presentation was informative and fun.  Can you say Quetzalcoatlus? Do you know what that name means?  Can you spell 'pterosaur'? Did you know that dinosaurs probably had pea sized brains?  Year One are our resident experts and will be happy to answer your questions!

Year One Visit the Chelsea Physic Garden

Year One enjoyed a sunny day of fun and exploration.  They investigated seeds, plants and pond life. They also made clay imprints using their findings and related their learning to the dinosaurs.  They even discovered some plant varieties dating back to the time of the dinosaurs!  Year One also saw plants with magical and medicinal qualities such as the screaming mandrake and deadly belladonna.  Luckily we all came home in one piece!

Fairseat Celebrates Science Week

No celebration of Science at Channing would be complete without Mr Jacobs’ Science Show. Fairseat pupils enjoyed entertaining explanations of how to make a rainbow, how to turn a full cup of water upside down (without spilling a drop) and how to swing hedgehogs from a string. Of course, there are proper scientific theories to support the swinging hedgehogs, as discovered by Galileo, who may not necessarily have used these toys at that time.  Mr Jacobs assures us that his seasoned spiky assistants were not injured during this daring acrobatic investigation. Miss Snowdowne also treated us to some surprising sights from the garden as she showed us our own 'Fairseat Springwatch' pictures.  We were delighted to see foxes, birds and squirrels enjoying the grounds as much as we do.  We may, however, leave drinking directly from the pond to the foxes and keep the swings for ourselves and the toy hedgehogs.

Fairseat Hosts a Book Swap

During Science Week, Fairseat hosted a Book Swap and invited 2 classes from St Michaels to come and participate in the Book Swap. This was a super opportunity for the children to recycle their favourite books and swap them with each other.  The girls were amazed to discover that the boys reading choice was not dissimilar to their own!

Y5 Smile at Sayers Croft!

Year 5 enjoyed their Sayers Croft adventure. They took good care of William Bear, who kept a detailed daily diary of all their activities. In the pictures, William looks very relaxed but Year 5 seem to be working hard. Year 5 shared their Sayers Croft secrets with Fairseat when they revealed the diary contents during a very informative and lively assembly. Welcome back, Year 5! It looks like you had fun.

Year 4's Rainforest Assembly

Year 4’s presentation about the Rainforest was informative, thorough and entertaining. From the shrubs of the forest floor, through the canopy of the trees to the emergents rising above the forest, Year 4 explained why this land is so special and important. They also performed a very dramatic dance and their colourful costumes added to the spectacle too.

Smile Day Success

Fairseat was alive with laughter as we celebrated a special Smile Day to raise money for Project Harar. Colourful clothes and delicious cakes brightened the day, cheering everyone on their way to half-term. The day was a great success and many thanks are due to everyone involved.

Birthdays and Bears

It is Fairseat tradition, during assembly, to celebrate birthdays. Teachers are sometimes rewarded with stickers, song and congratulations too! As half term approached, the Fairseat bears, Connie and William, were entered into a lucky draw. The tension was palpable as girls from Reception to Year Six waited expectantly to discover who would be taking them home for the holidays. A journal of their adventures is kept by their happy hosts and we look forward to finding out where they go this week.

Fairseat Goes Hopping Mad!

There is no finer place to be on a bright day than the lovely Fairseat Garden. The addition of space hoppers to our playtime equipment has been met with much excitement as can be seen in these pictures. Girls are making the most of break time opportunities to play, chat and explore our sunny garden and climbing frames. Whether you want to catch-up with friends, hang upside-down or run around, you can find it all here!

Good Work Achievements at Fairseat

Fairseat girls continue to achieve to a high standard and inspire success as the latest and very busy Good Work Assembly proved. Certificates of achievement for outstanding work and effort were given to girls from Reception to Year Six.  Music Certificates from the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music were also presented to girls who had recently passed examinations, many with Merits and Distinctions. These instrumentalists included amongst others, a Clarinetist, Trombone and French Horn Player and our first Double Bassist. The youngest was Charlotte W who gained Distinction for her Violin examination. All of this made for a very happy and proud Fairseat assembly. Congratulations!

Open Music Lessons

Miss Pepper enchanted the Reception and Year 1 parents by inviting them to see what their daughters learn in music lessons here at Fairseat. Miss Pepper introduced parents to the principles she follows of instilling a good sense of rhythm  in order to prepare the girls to read musical notation in Year 2, a full year ahead of most schools. With some kinaesthetic learning including clapping, clicking, singing and dancing, the classes performed perfectly enabling parents to gain a clearer understanding of what it takes to be a musician at Fairseat and at the Senior School too. These early years are key to a successful musical future.

Year 6 Certificates of Achievement

Our Year 6 Osmington Bay pupils each received certificates of achievement from the PGL Activity Centre, where we were based. Their fantastic team spirit, enthusiasm and ability to work hard were recognised and rewarded. They were indeed excellent ambassadors for the school on this occasion and fond memories of this sunny week will be cherished for years to come. Congratulations to all of Year 6!

KS2 Design and Technology Workshop

Darcy Turner lead an extremely inspiring workshop for Year 5 and 6 pupils where they designed and built chairs strong enough to support their own weight.  They used machines, of Darcy's own invention, to make rods out of newspaper and paste which were then used to construct the chairs. Much fun was had by all, including the teachers.  Years 5 and 6 are now experts in applying theories of triangulation, forces and the building of strong and stable structures. The chairs are currently being displayed in the Fairseat Orangery.

Year 2 Investigate Insects

Year 2 are studying creepy crawlies. 2C performed an informative assembly and both classes visited the Hampstead Heath Education Centre where they investigated mini beasts and their habitats. Activities included hunting for mini beasts,  pond dipping and  creating clay mini beasts and their homes. It was a hands on and fun filled day for Year 2 who are now expert entomologists!

Year Five Visit Regents Park Mosque

Year 5 were taken to Regents Park Mosque to learn more about Islam. We had a fantastic tour of the beautiful mosque by our guide who gave us interesting information about the mosque and the beliefs of a Muslim. We were particularly in awe of the huge bronze domed roof and the rich decorations of the prayer hall, especially the chandelier and mihrab. We learnt a great deal about the community and how important and significant it is to Muslim people. We thoroughly enjoyed our time there.

Y5 Visit The Houses of Parliament

Year 5 went to the Houses of Parliament as part of our topic on Citizenship.  We began our tour in the Great Hall which is the only part of the Palace of Westminster to have survived a fire.  Next we went into the House of Lords (The Red Room) and saw where the Queen sits when she opens Parliament each year. We then visited the House of Commons (The Green Room) and pretended to be Prime Minister! We each had the opportunity to take part in a ballot, “Should half term be abolished”? Obviously we all voted “NO” and had 8 minutes to cast our votes to the Clerks in the Noes Lobby. It was such an interesting day.

Year 3's Giant Adventure

Year 3 had a splendiferous trip to the Roald Dahl Museum in Great Missenden.  They sat in Roald Dahl’s comfy and well worn chair in his Writing Hut and explored the Writer’s Gallery.  Later that day they continued their adventures by visiting Bekonscot Model Village. Here,  they  imagined how a Big Friendly Giant might feel when collecting dreams at night. Year 3 felt gigantic  wandering around the tiny intricate world on display. It was a very successful and inspiring day.

Year One Enjoy Seaside Day!

Year One were treated to a day beside the sea without leaving the school grounds... They travelled back in time to sample the delights of a Victorian era and 1950's seaside. They enjoyed dressing-up, telling fortunes, travelling by steam train and of course a Punch and Judy puppet show too. It was a fun filled and busy day for everyone! Many thanks to Nancy, our super seaside visitor, for bringing the beach to life at Fairseat.

Easter Bonnets!

Look at our beautiful Easter Bonnets!

Year 3 weather assembly

Is it raining cats and dogs? Can you see a cow lying down? What does it mean if there is a red sky at night? Not only did Year 3 explain what these weather-related phrases mean, they also brought us some fantastic weather reports from a range of countries around the world, from Bombay to Australia via northern Canada and London.

Year 6 Visit The Imperial War Museum

Year 6 enjoyed a beautiful Spring day at the Imperial War Museum. We talked to real evacuees in a mock school room, had a look around the 1940s house and finally took part in the Blitz experience! The ARP (Air Raid Precautions) warden thought that Mr Thompson was a Russian spy but we managed to get back to the coach safely without him being arrested!

Year 4 Tower of London Trip

Year 4 visited the Tower of London and had a lesson all about torture.  We saw the exhibition of torture equipment including the Rack, Manacles and the Scavenger’s Daughter.  We also saw the site where people such as Anne Boleyn, Catherine Howard and Lady Jane Grey were beheaded. The area is marked by a glass cushion that was designed to ‘catch their heads'. We all enjoyed seeing the Crown Jewels for two reasons; firstly because they were very pretty with lots of jewels, including the world’s largest diamond, and secondly because it was warm (outside it was freezing!)  We all sketched our favourite jewels. We ended our day in the oldest part of the Tower, the White Tower, which was built by William the Conqueror. We saw lots of weapons and the armour belonging to all the Kings, including a tiny suit made for Edward VI when he was only 13 years old.  We all had a wonderful day (despite the cold weather) and it really brought the Tudors to life.

Year 3 trip to Verulanium Museum

To find out more about Roman life, Year 3 visited St Albans to see Roman artefacts and to see the hypocaust.  They had a fun and invigorating day finding out how Romans built their houses, bathed and cooked.  Girls ate their packed prandium (lunch) and were relieved not to be treated to a Roman favourite, 'garum' which was made by mixing fish waste with salt water and then leaving it to stew for several weeks. Delicious!

Team GB triathlete Jane Hinne visits Fairseat

Have you ever met a world-class athlete? Have you ever wondered what a triathlete does or how they manage all those clothing changes?  How do triathletes manage to compete in a race that combines swimming, cycling and running?  We were lucky to be visited by Jane Hinne, a truly international triathlete who sports Team GB colours and status! She showed us how she changes from her wetsuit into her cycling kit and then from the cycling to running, where it is a quick shoe change and then a sprint to the finishing line.Jane told us about the perils of competing in the sea, where she battles against the waves and the difficulties faced in lakes and ponds where she wades through weed, ducks and geese. She introduced us to her bike doctor, bicycle technician, Duncan Alexander, who also kindly fixed some Fairseat bikes at lunch time. It was a truly inspiring assembly. Now we are all keen to know how to swim, run and cycle like real medal winners.

Y4 Netball Success

And in other sports news - our fantastic Year 4 netball squad beat South Hamsptead High School by a staggering 11 goals to one (A Team) and five nil (B Team)! This is their third consecutive win. We have some netball champions of our own to celebrate

World Book Day

Once upon a time, in Highgate Village, there was a school full of eager bookworms. Every day they dreamed of dressing-up as their favourite book characters. Could their wish ever come true? As if by magic, to celebrate World Book Day (and to raise money for this term's charity FoodCycle), Fairseat staff and pupils leafed through their wardrobes to bring these characters to life. We were graced with a variety of animals, children, witches, wizards and ghosts. Year 6 treated every class to a story session in our library. They also showed us some of the new books that now fill our shelves. It was a fantastic day! The girls' dreams of dressing up had come true! The end.

Year 6 WW2 Austerity Assembly

Have you ever considered eating mashed potato and cocoa powder mixed together to form a possibly delicious but probably revolting chocolate spread?  Do you know how rationing worked during the war?  What was life like as an evacuee?  Year 6 gave a witty and entertaining presentation for their 'Come Dine With Me' (War Time Special) themed assembly. The costumes, sets and multimedia sounds and images helped us to imagine what life was like during these difficult times.

Year 4 Tudor Assembly

The Tudors came to Fairseat and we witnessed the politics and intrigue of life in the court of Henry VIII.  We were treated to an all singing, all dancing historic spectacular as Y4 recreated great moments in Tudor history during their sophisticated and accomplished assembly performance. Luckily, no one lost their head during the show!

Year 2K Neil Armstrong Assembly

5...4...3...2...1...Blast Off!  Y2K wowed us all with their fantastic assembly about space travel. It was one small step for mankind but one giant leap for our Fairseat pupils  as we witnessed Neil Armstrong’s trip to the moon with a brilliant multimedia presentation.  Year 2K sang, spoke and performed like true stars!

Maths Puzzle Week

Think of a number. Multiply it, double it and halve it.  Can you find a shape with an even number of sides?  Can you construct a 3D box for your smarties?  Can you solve number mysteries? Who can find the heaviest potato? How many stairs are there in school? Are there more stairs or doors in school? All this and more took place as we celebrated Maths Week at Fairseat. We finished our week with an amazing visit from the Happy Puzzle Company.

Happy Chinese New Year!

Kung Hei Fat Choy! 2011 is the Chinese lunar year of the rabbit. To celebrate we were treated to rice, noodles, spring rolls, traditional chicken dishes and fortune cookies too! Did you know that the rabbit is the fourth animal in the twelve year cycle of Chinese Zodiac signs?  Do you know ... what the date will be when it is the turn of the rabbit again?  What other animals feature in the Chinese Zodiac?  Do you know your Zodiac animal and its characteristics? Can you write a fortune in ten words or fewer to hide inside a fortune cookie....

Channing’s Poet Laureate Visits Fairseat

Ellie, Channing's very own Poet Laureate, treated the Junior school to a collection of her favourite poems including some of her own work. Ellie chose poems to make us laugh and think and reminded us that poems can be about anything, from mangos to midnight! Ellie is running a poetry competition for our budding Fairseat poets.

Year 5 are out of this world!

5, 4, 3, 2, 1…..Blast off! After intensive astronaut training at Space School, Year 5 were ready to take control of their lunar space craft and go where no school girl has gone before. This project was part of our Science topic of Earth, Sun and Moon and the girls enjoyed making a space shuttle, landing on the Moon and sending a postcard home detailing their findings. As one astronaut reported back, “One small step for a girl, one giant leap for womankind!”

Year 4 Tudor Day

Year 4 experienced an unforgettable day in the life of the Tudors.  We took part in many Tudor workshops, which we all really enjoyed!  We made our own candles by repeatedly dipping a piece of string into a pot of hot melted wax. There was also a soap-making workshop where we had to grind spices and bits of soap into a powder, add rose water and then roll it all into a ball. We made a card locket and painted a picture of our loved one on the inside!  In another workshop we made ink and wrote with a quill in Latin.  We also made medicines and worked with leather.  In the afternoon we enjoyed a wonderful banquet with a play, a dance and servants. Lee led the day and some very kind Mums volunteered to help. We are sure there isn’t anyone who did not enjoy it!

By Year 4 Pupils

Year 1 Dragon Assembly

Year 1 told us all about two very different dragons during their assembly. They told the 'Tale of Custard the Cowardly Dragon' by Ogden Nash and sang 'Puff the Magic Dragon' too. Did you know that Custard was the inspiration behind Puff?  The girls spoke and sang with great clarity and feeling.

Year 5 Maths Assembly

Year 5 explained that we could not get through the day without using Mathematics.  From arriving at school to taking part in lessons and eating lunch, we use maths all the time. Well done, Y5 on a 100% successful performance!

October 2010 Music Assembly

We were treated to a medley of musicians to showcase the range of instruments being played by our dedicated Fairseat pupils. The performances were all top notch, impressing everyone, including the parents of the girls who were invited to the assembly.  Many congratulations to Miss Pepper and her talented team of peripatetic teachers for bringing such brilliant music to our ears.

Service with a Smile

Year 1 enjoyed an active and busy day at Gunnersbury Park Museum to learn more about people who help us, the subject of their topic work.   They travelled back to Victorian times and took part in hands-on lessons in cooking, cleaning and general housework. They also handled many unusual objects from that time including a back straightener for children who slouched in school and finger stocks, a punishment for fiddly fingers!  Happily, everyone returned to school unscathed and promising to listen well in class and help with the cleaning jobs at home.

Recycling Success

The girls in Reception helped Mrs Elliott  to sort through the old phones, batteries and clothes on Channing's Recycling Day.

Y5 Visit the V+A

Year 5 visited the Victoria and Albert Museum as part of our topic on Victorian Britain. It was a great day.....we found out about Victorian fashions, tried on some outfits and learnt how to squeeze into a corset! We built our own Crystal Palace, explored the Great Exhibition and found out about the Art and Craft Movement. A fun day - we were very much amused!

Y4 Neasden Temple Trip

On Friday 8th October Year 4 travelled to the BAP Shri Swaminarayan Mandir (Hindu Temple) in Neasden as we have been learning about Hinduism in R.E. We feel very lucky to have such an important temple so close to see in real life. We were amazed at how little time it took to build (3 years). We found out that all the marble was carved by hand and shipped from India. It was a miracle that none of the carvings were damaged. We even took part in an ‘Arti’ ceremony which was calming and relaxing. We found it very interesting and want to go again!

Something to Think About

Year 5 gave us all something to think about when they presented their Thinking Skills assembly. Can you tell a story in fewer than ten words? Which thinking skills do you use when playing netball? Could you develop your detecting skills by applying your knowledge of graphs and charts to solve a complex murder mystery problem? Year 5 can do all this and more!

Don't forget your tooth brush

Year 3's assembly on teeth was something to smile about!

A towering achievement!

Many thanks to the Fairseat Channing Association for the addition of the wonderful play tower in the Fairseat garden. It is proving very popular indeed!
