Art Trip to Paris

02.12.09

In order to enhance our understanding of 19th Century French art, the History of Art class travelled to Paris for the day with Mr Crawford. It was a wonderful trip, during which we saw a large variety of works. We learnt a great deal about them and the contexts in which they were made.

We arrived at La Musée Marmottan bright and early. We were awed when we entered to find ourselves looking at the largest collection of Monet paintings in the world displayed in a delightful Neo-Classical building. We then went to La Musée d’Art Moderne for lunch where we saw Albert Oehlen’s Realité Abstraite Exhibition. We thoroughly enjoyed Oehlen’s cryptic paintings, which consisted of a variety of ideas spread out on a canvas. His work explored the nature of painting, in a unique way. We then went to Rodin Museum where we saw a plethora of sculptures by the legendary artist. Some made us quite emotional, whilst others made us burst out laughing, particularly Rodin’s Balzac Nude Study, which portrayed Balzac proudly displaying his fat stomach. We also enjoyed learning about the complex process that goes into creating a bronze sculpture.

After a wonderful day there was just one thing left to do: to try the Parisian cuisine. We had a lovely dinner in a French restaurant before returning home to London, passing under Barlow’s amazing cast iron train shed in St Pancras Station. The day could not have been more perfect and I would like to thank Mr Crawford for making it possible.
