Extracts from a letter from Aniko Anghi (1951-1957)
“I was very happy at Channing and made some wonderful friends. I am sure I was not the only pupil to look forward to each term.”
With regard to “ ‘Channing School: A Chronicle of 125 Years’... It was a joy to see the photograph of the staff taken in 1958. I recall most of them. Miss Powell who encouraged me to take up Art as a career. Miss Entrican, whose true aim with the blackboard (green actually) cleaner was so accurate it was a brave pupil who dared to misbehave. Mrs Robertson who was so kind to me and invited me to have tea with her and her husband. Miss McRae who was strict but fair and encouraged my love of literature. Miss Illsley who taught at my prep school (Godstowe). We started at Channing together, it was a comfort to see a familiar face. Jeppie, dear Jeppie, who taught the piano to my mother, sister and to me. She told Gyöngyi that I was the most talented of us three but also the laziest.”
A VIEW FROM THE FISH TANK
The idea of ‘A View from the Fish Tank’ sprang from a chance remark of a girl on the stairs who referred to the new Development Office that appeared on the first floor landing of Haigh House during the Autumn term as ‘the fish tank’. In my new role as Development Director I am like a fish looking out of my tank at the activities and excitement of Channing life. This is a purely personal view and is not an expression of the views of the School. And so the blog began...’
