THE CHANNING FIRST NOVEL COMPETITION

Are you hoping to complete a novel?


If so, and if you would like to compete for the chance for your first chapter to be read by two literary agents, read on. The competition is open to current parents, to staff and governors, and to Old Girls.


Submit your first chapter (3000 words maximum) and a synopsis (maximum 2 sides of A4, double-spaced), to aburnsassoc@btinternet.com and your entry will be considered for recommendation to Judith Murray of Greene and Heaton (www.greeneheaton.co.uk) and Caroline Wood of Felicity Bryan Associates (www.felicitybryan.com).

Terms and conditions
•    Entrants must not already have had a novel published
•    Entrants must have completed their novel by the entry deadline
•    Entries must be the work of the entrant
•    Entries must include a synopsis
•    Entries must include full contact details, on a separate page
•    Entries should be typed, 12-point, in English, double-spaced and with pages numbered
•    The title should appear on each page
•    No correction can be made after receipt
•    Beyond acknowledgement of receipt, no correspondence will be entered into
•    Judges’ decision is final
•    Feedback will be offered on shortlisted entries only
•    Only shortlisted entrants will be notified
•    Should no entry reach the required standard, the competition organisers reserve the right to cancel the competition
•    Representation by one or other agent is not guaranteed
•    Publication is not guaranteed
•    Worldwide copyright of each entry remains with the author
•    The winner will be announced in December 2012
•    Entry implies acceptance of all the rules

Alison Burns
Channing 1953-1966; Somerville College, Oxford, 1967-1971 (BA Hons, Literae Humaniores)
Alison has worked as an editor, reader, reviewer and mentor across a wide range of literary markets. She has lectured in creative writing since 2002 and directed the one-year Certificate in Novel Writing course at City University London - which she co-designed and co-delivered - from 2005 to 2011.
