Prescription Medication
Parents must complete the Prescription Medication Administration form and hand it in to the Nurse or School Office with the medication in its original container. It will then be administered as prescribed. Girls are not to carry any medicines on their person during school hours (see below for exceptions).
Any girl who needs to use an inhaler for asthma should carry it with her at all times, and will be allowed to use it as necessary. Girls in KS1 must hand in their inhaler to their class teacher at the start of each day and take it home each afternoon. Their teacher will ensure it is kept safely and given to PE staff when necessary. A spare named inhaler must be brought in to be kept in school. Parents must ensure that an asthma card is also completed and sent into school.
Parents of girls with allergies must complete and send in an Allergy Form.
Any girl in the senior school who is prescribed an Epi-pen is encouraged to keep it with her at all times. Her second Epi-pen will be stored in an unlocked cupboard in the nurses’ room, so as to be easily accessible if required in an emergency.
Girls in the junior school are not expected to take responsibility for their Epi-pens. Two sets of emergency drugs must be provided for them to be kept at school.
Parents are responsible for ensuring medications kept at school are within their expiration dates and replaced when necessary.
Any food allergies will be discussed with the catering manager to ensure appropriate meals are provided.
All medicines with the exception of Epi-pens and inhalers must be collected at the end of the academic year. Reminders to this effect will be sent out. Any medicines not collected on the last day will be disposed of.
There are regular staff training sessions (run by the Nurses) on dealing with medical emergencies in the school. The sessions includes dealing with asthma, diabetes, epilepsy, anaphalactic shock and how to use an epi-pen. The various procedures for getting assistance and an ambulance are covered.
A list of girls with serious medical conditions is made available to all relevant staff.
