The Sixth Form

'Never forget: life is
expecting much of you
and me' - Matilda Sharp
Sixth form at Channing is a great contrast to Middle School and Upper School, as Sixth formers feel more independent, mature and that they have more of a responsibility in their individual studies. Founders' Hall has transformed Sixth Form life greatly. With a larger common room, girls have the choice of making themselves tea or coffee, preparing buttered toast and relaxing with their friends on our comfortable and colour co-ordinated chairs. For lunchtime, girls also have the choice of pre-ordering panini sandwiches in case they don't have time to go down to the dining room. As well as the common room, Founders' Hall is also equipped with more computer rooms and an Art studio. Girls have frees in their timetables, they don't have to go very far to find somewhere to work in peace and quiet.
Duke of Edinburgh
From Year 11, if having previously completed the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh award, girls are qualified to do Silver and/or Gold.
The course is very successful at Channing as it gives the chance to learn First Aid, improve their awareness of risk, health and safety, and touch up their navigation, route-planning and team building skills.
Young Enterprise
As girls settle into Sixth form life, Year 12s have the option of being a part of Young Enterprise.
The Young Enterprise Company Programme gives girls the opportunity to set up a real business enterprise, which is organised on the pattern of a limited company, but are not legally incorporated. Each girl in each group have a vital role, whether
it be Managing or Marketing Director, in keeping their enterprise running, whilst they test out their ideas, skills, and ability to cope with various situations.
Gaining a Young Enterprise qualification has proved to have been a great asset to girls' CVs, as it makes them different to other potential candidates at universities. It also tells employers that they understand the world of work and business. This is why we encourage girls to take part in this valuable programme, as it provides them valuable experience and a platform on which they can express themselves like adults.
Channing has been involved with the Young Enterprise for many years, and to this date girls have commented on how enriching the experience is.

Sixth Form girls are clearly identifiable around the school; they do not have to wear school uniform. They are the seniors of the school and they enjoy the respect that this brings from both staff and from the younger girls. Year 11 pupils from other schools are invited into the Sixth Form for a unique Taster Day opportunity.
We firmly believe that the best way to ensure continuing high standards is to allow each of the individuals who study here an opportunity to take responsibility for themselves as young adults. We aim to provide our pupils with a secure, and yet stimulating environment in which they can grow both intellectually and socially. Potentially, they have a very exciting two years ahead and we are here to help them realise this potential.

Sixth Formers take the lead in whole-school productions, concerts, fund raising, House assemblies and whole-school assemblies.
The School’s fine facilities include a separate Sixth Form suite with a wide range of study, IT, recreational and catering facilities for older students.
One of the greatest strengths of Sixth Form is the breadth of the curriculum on offer, timetabling is very flexible and all the arts, sciences, humanities, modern and classical languages are represented. In addition to the wide range of extra-curricular activities on offer to the whole school, the Sixth Form benefit from additional options.
All Sixth Formers follow an Enrichment programme, and we offer enrichment courses in Critical Thinking, General Studies, Financial Studies, LAMDA and Italian for beginners. In addition to lessons in the classroom, Sixth Formers are invited to participate in an extensive programme of excursions, in the UK and abroad, and study days.
Excellent A level examination results ensure entry to the best higher education establishments, with approximately 10% each year attaining places at Oxford and Cambridge. At the end of the two years, there is an opportunity to play against staff in a variety of sporting activities, and every two years the Channing Association organises a School Ball for Sixth Formers.
