Inspirational Speakers – Baroness Grey-Thompson DBE

Last week, the Channing community were fortunate enough to have a talk given by Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson, a crossbench Peer in the House of Lords. She is currently Britain’s most successful Paralympian after competing in 5 Paralympic Games, amassing an incredible 11 gold medals before transitioning into politics. She spoke about her remarkable and varied career, including her work in media as one of the first female wheelchair users to regularly present on television as well as her athletic career and more recently her role in the House of Lords. She highlighted the importance of hard work and commitment in enabling her to achieve her goals as an elite athlete, alongside the struggles she has faced as wheelchair user where many did not believe that she would ever be able to compete in sport. She then moved on to talk about her career in politics, explaining that she wanted to be able to make a difference to the lives of those who are not as fortunate. It was so interesting to hear about her views on reform in the House of Lords, which had to be put on hold very briefly, whilst she cast her vote electronically in front of us all! She is an inspiration to us all and a perfect example of what can be achieved through hard work and dedication.
