It was a sunny Friday lunchtime outside and an even sunnier one in the Arundel Centre as we were provided with a wonderful respite to current world affairs, when the following students took to the stage for our Music at Lunchtime concert. Mainly younger vocalists enthralled with a range of songs. Susie D, who, like her subject of Seagull, positively soared and swooped. Juliet B flew serenely with her Butterfly. Teresa G’s rendition of ‘When She Loved Me’ from ‘Toy Story 2′ should leave her in no doubt that her enraptured audience loved her! Those who think recorder playing should be consigned to history should think again – Georgina V on the Descant Recorder was compellingly mesmerising with an Eyck ‘Fantasia and Echo’. Juliet B and Winnie D delighted with an assured and warm ‘Evening Prayer’ from ‘Hansel and Gretel’. It was left to Simran T (Violin) whose Vocalise by Rachmaninov had an obvious vocal connection. This intense, calm performance perfectly reflected the composer’s intentions. Initially written for high voice with piano accompaniment, it contains no words, but is sung using only one vowel of the singer’s choosing. Do listen again – food for the soul!
