Visit to the Australian High Commission

On the 24th of March, a group of fifty Channing linguists, would-be politicians and future diplomats had the privilege of attending the Australian High Commission, kindly hosted by Ms Heckscher, the Deputy High Commissioner at Australia House, where we were able to gain a detailed and inspiring insight into the work of diplomacy first hand from an amazing panel of highly experienced and well-regarded diplomats and former ambassadors. Mr Doyle, Ms McDonald, Mr Ferguson and Ms Heckscher, as well as special guests Catherine West MP and Adam Jogee, Mayor of Haringey answered all our burning questions about careers in diplomacy and politics, telling us the most challenging professional situations they have had to deal with in a career in which no two days are ever the same.

We were given a tour of the grand building on The Strand, which was, we were told, used as the site for Gringotts in the Harry Potter films. The evening ended with a drinks party, at which Tim-Tams were served, much to the delight of the Australian teachers who accompanied us. During this reception, the sixth formers were tasked with an interactive activity, where we had to source information subtly from members of the High Commission to piece together what had happened to a “minister” from Australia. We had a lot of fun trying to feel like diplomats and experiencing first-hand how to network and it really topped off the immersive experience. We also were very kindly gifted cups with the Australia House logo which will serve as reminders of the fantastic experience we had at the High Commission. We are very grateful to the Channing parents who made this event possible.
