Learning the languages of Mozart, Bach and Beethoven

German is the language of Goethe, Kafka, Mozart, Bach and Beethoven. Indulging in reading and /or listening to their works in their original language is one of the aims we have for our students at Channing.

Girls in Year 7 are offered taster lessons which enable them to make an informed choice for their language options in Year 8. Girls with knowledge of German or indeed native speakers are given extension material and projects in order to practise and improve their writing skills, which will prepare them should they wish to take their IGCSE examinations early.

In Years 8 and 9 students learn basic language skills and also get an insight into the culture of the German-speaking countries. A visit to the Christmas Market in Aachen, Germany, is one of the highlights of their cultural experience.

In Year 9 girls are invited to participate in the long-established and successful German Exchange programme with our partner school in Aachen.

The IGCSE German course in Years 10 and 11 aims to develop an ability to use the language effectively for purposes of practical communication. The resulting qualification which is highly regarded provides a foundation for higher level courses, such as A level.

A study tour to Berlin and Dresden is offered to girls in Years 11 and above.
We use the Edexcel IGCSE in all 3 languages.
