On Wednesday 16 November, Channing students were joined by members of other schools in our local community, including St Aloysius’ College, where we received an informative talk by Baroness Parminter. Sophie, a student Careers Leader in Year 11, interviewed Baroness Parminter and the audience had many incisive questions. She gave an overview of her student years, her path into university, her early career and her career as a peer in the House of Lords. She is a Liberal Democrat life peer, Deputy Leader of the Liberal Democrats in the House of Lords, and the Liberal Democrats Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Spokesperson. She has focused her career on conservation and environmental activism and spoke of the importance of passion and knowledge in the workplace. Her inspiring message to be outspoken and direct in life and your career was especially impactful. We received a deeper understanding and appreciation of the political world and how legislation and progress happens. It was so motivating to hear from someone who is so influential in politics and passionate about conserving our planet; I am sure everyone in the room was left inspired to treat the environment with more care and become part of the political landscape.
