Year 10 Concert

Posted: 31st January 2025

Last Thursday, our Year 10 GCSE Music students had their first formal concert of the academic year in the Arundel Centre. Nearly all of the Year 10 GCSE Music cohort participated, with each student performing a solo piece on their main instrument or voice, as well as contributing to an ensemble performance. The concert featured a total of 16 performances and was attended by fellow pupils, parents, and staff.

The evening opened with Becky R delivering a rousing and confident vocal performance of ‘I Can Hear The Bells’ from Hairspray. This was followed by Margot v P on the piano, whose hypnotic and flowing rendition of Einaudi’s ‘Gravity’ captivated the audience. Solara W gave a convincing performance of the 1st movement of Rieding’s Violin Concerto in B Minor, Op. 35, while Chileshe G offered a sensitive and reflective vocal interpretation of Rutter’s ‘A Gaelic Blessing’.

Next, Ella B performed JS Bach’s ever-popular ‘Prelude in C’ (BWV 846) flawlessly on the piano. Sabrina K continued with a meticulous reading of Cimarosa’s ‘Sonata in G’, C.34, 1st movement. Ari A gave a characterful and spirited performance of Rousse/Littorie’s ‘Fantaisie Valse’, and Ane J closed the first half of the concert with an unaccompanied and confident rendition of Martini’s ‘Gavotte’ on the violin.

After a brief intermission, Nia H delivered a personal and moving piano performance of Litten’s ‘Sad Ghost’. Indy D followed with a thoughtful rendition of Mascagni’s much-loved ‘Intermezzo’ from Cavalleria Rusticana on the flute.

Susie D’s superb vocal interpretation of Rodgers & Hart’s ‘Blue Moon’ was a highlight of the second half, contrasted by Darcy D’s dexterous and spirited cello performance of Goens’ ‘Tarantelle’, Op. 24. One of the most memorable moments of the concert came with a duet by Serrana B (vocals) and Renatta R A (piano), who delivered a powerful rendition of ‘Always Remember Us This Way’ from A Star Is Born.

Georgina V impressed with a superb performance of Bullard’s ‘Mexican Hat Dance’ on the recorder. The concert concluded with two final performances: Imogen B gave a mature and articulate account of two Scarlatti sonata movements (Adagio e Cantabile from Sonata in A, K.208 and Allegro from Sonata in A, K.209), followed by Serrana B’s emotionally charged and powerful vocals and guitar rendition of ‘The Climb’ by Alexander/Mabe.

We wish to congratulate all our Year 10 GCSE Music students for their fabulous performances, especially as this concert marked their first formal group outing since the beginning of their course. Special thanks also go to our dedicated music teachers for their hard work in preparing the students for this event, as well as to Mr. Boxall, Mr. Kokkinos, and Mr. Wedmore for their piano accompaniment during several performances.
