Music at Lunchtime – Friday 28th February 2025

Posted: 5th March 2025

The inaugural lunchtime concert of this half-term began with a serene flute duet of Sicilienne by Fauré, performed by Catrin C (13PS) and Elene K (9GHa). Setting the tone for a Fauré-centered rest of term (if you know, you know), it was a truly beautiful performance, with both the dialogue between the flutes and the unspoken connection between the flautists evident throughout.

Following that, Yasmin L (9JB) performed Czardas by Monti, beginning in the dramatic lower register of the violin before soaring through the piece’s dynamic climbs. At one point, a dramatic pause executed by Yasmin and Mr. Kokkinos caught the audience off guard—some even began clapping prematurely! Nevertheless, Yasmin continued into the fast section, dazzling us all with the speed and dexterity of her runs. The challenging ending, featuring exceptionally high harmonics and demanding double stops, was played masterfully and with great ease. Well done, Yasmin!

Next, Evie D (7JG) sang Drivers License by Olivia Rodrigo. The last time we heard Evie, she performed Maybe from Annie, so it was fantastic to hear her tackle such a contrasting piece requiring a completely different tone. Especially impressive for a Year 7—she has many more fabulous lunchtime concerts ahead!

Following Evie, Ramun N (8VS) played Indigo Moon by Elissa Milne on the piano. A truly gorgeous piece of music, which Ramun performed beautifully. The emotion was perfectly captured through her delicate use of pedal and rubato. Stunning work, Ramun!

Up next was Susie D (10MG), who sang Cry Me a River with expert control over the drama and emotion of the piece. The song demands a wide range and precise phrasing—a challenging performance that Susie delivered with great skill!

Finally, Madison Y (7CWi) played A Deep Song by Walton on the double bass. What a performance! She displayed remarkable musical maturity and precision, both in technique and tonality.

I’m looking forward to seeing all of these performers again soon! Do listen here:
