Music at lunchtime – Friday 6th June 2025

Posted: 12th June 2025

After a week of miserable weather, the sun decided to shine today for a special Year 7 and 8 edition of Music at Lunchtime. The AC was packed- after a week of exams for Years 10 and 12, everyone took this lovely opportunity to relax and listen to some great music! First up was Lucia F in 7LR, playing ‘Old German Dance’ by Praetorius on the piano. She gave us a confident rendition of a piece that requires fluency in both hands, and her use of articulation gave it a wonderful upbeat feel. Next was Araiya N in 8CC, who played Tchaikovsky’s iconic introduction to Swan Lake! It’s not often we get to listen to bassoon in music at lunchtime, so it was a real pleasure to hear such an enchanting piece be played so smoothly by Araiya. Afterwards, Valentina A-D in 7LR played us the wonderful jazzy piece ‘Take Five’ by Dave Brubeck on the flute. This is a really tricky piece to nail, so huge props to Valentina for perfecting all the nuances and ornaments that make this piece so brilliant. Up next, Beth H in 8VS sang ‘What Was I Made For’, and Anya A in 8VS accompanied her on the piano. Beth’s voice is definitely comparable to Billie Eilish’s, as both have a wonderfully gentle quality to their singing. Anya’s accompanying skills are superb- she seamlessly adapted to Beth’s rubato and varied the dynamics to accommodate the emotion of the song. Their talents complemented each other beautifully. Finally, the concert ended on a bittersweet note as another brilliant duo, Suki D and Tess M in 8LV, sang ‘It Ain’t Me Babe’, with Suki both singing and accompanying on guitar. ‘It Ain’t Me Babe’ is a beautifully tragic song with chords to match that were played tenderly by Suki. Tess’s brighter quality and Suki’s darker tone blended magically, and the emotion was conveyed perfectly- our very own Bob Dylan and Joan Baez! Do listen HERE.
