The new Sustainability Officers for the summer term, Imogen and Bella, and the previous Sustainability Officers, Opal and Satine, have led a dedicated team of Eco Reps who have been trying to make a real difference to the Channing environment and thinking about our impact on the wider world. They have met every Thursday lunchtime to plan and take part in events throughout the year. The focus for this year has been on reducing Channing’s carbon footprint in a variety of ways. Whether it has been calculating the carbon footprint of all the different options on the school menu and then championing the low carbon options, to raising money for Just One Tree, planting trees in the school grounds, trying to recycle more effectively, introducing more fairtrade products in the 6th form, informative assemblies on COP30 and deforestation, gardening, making bird feeders, taking part in national initiatives including One Tree Day, Keep Britain Tidy litter picks, clean air initiatives, Mock Cop or the RSPB big schools bird watch, everyone has been very busy.
We ran our fourth Sustainability Week in the autumn term with the eco team out in force surveying students about their journeys to school, collecting air pollution readings with our local Green councillor and running a competition to see which house used the least number of car journeys (Goodwin won). The Eco Reps then ran a cake sale raising over £300 for the charity Just One Tree. Students were asked to bake a sustainably themed cake, with Satine and Opal as the ‘Bake Off’ judges – we had over 60 delicious and thoughtful entries. During the lunch times different activities ran including an eco crafts workshop, a second hand clothes sale and a sustainable smoothie-making session featuring an amazing pedal powered electric whisk invented by A level physicists Ava, Anya and Amber.

When I discovered such an inclusive and impactful Eco-Committee, through seeing them caring for plants, putting up posters, and giving talks to spread awareness of practical ways to help the environment, I was enthusiastic to join them.”
