On Thursday 29 January, we had the pleasure of hosting our annual Music Theatre themed evening concert at the Arundel Centre. This is always a highly anticipated event in our Spring Term music calendar, where our pupils in addition to their vocal performances have to ‘act the part’ dressed in appropriate attire using props that represent the character and capture the mood and story of the song they are singing about.
Hattie F. started off the evening with an animated rendition of Popular from the musical Wicked. Up next was the turn of Connie G, the youngest performer of the evening, who sang in an effortless manner Always Remember Us This Way from A Star is Born. This was followed by Maisie B’s sensitive performance of the timeless classic Over the Rainbow from the Wizard of Oz. Maya S took the stage next to perform with a mature approach to Good Girl, Winnie Foster from Tuck Everlasting. This was followed by another timeless classic – God Help the Outcasts from The Hunchback of Notre Dame – sung with real conviction by Lara G.
Next, it was Hattie H’s turn to take the spotlight singing with aplomb Christmas Lullaby from the musical review Songs for a New World. After that, it was Sylvia B’s turn to take on one of the biggest musical numbers ever written for the musicals stage; she sang with expression On My Own from Les Miserables. Lily M’s turn was next, who took advantage of her theatrical skills (with some imaginative use of baking props including flour that added to the overall scene as it was flying all over the stage!) and gave a memorable rendition of What Baking Can Do from Waitress. A most hilarious performance of I Love Play Rehearsals from Be More Chill came next, captured in a truly entertaining style by Ellie M.
This was followed by a self-assured and secure performance by Anna G of Nothing Short of Wonderful from Dogfight, followed straight after by Saskia C’s mesmerising rendition of No One Else from Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812. Up next was Maya C’s turn who gave a gutsy and flawless performance of Burn from Hamilton, followed by Maika P-Y’s heart-wrenching interpretation of I Give My Life For You from Miss Saigon. The evening came to a close with our Year 12 vocal quintet – consisting of Stevie B, Juliet B, Bella K, Beatrice McN & Anna R-B – singing impeccably a capella, a most demanding version of Mama Who Bore Me (Reprise) from the musical Spring Awakening. Do watch the concert HERE.
