Beyond the ‘Prep’: Why Channing Junior School Offers Something Far Better

When parents first step through the gates of our Junior School in North London, the word “prep” naturally slips into conversation. It is a familiar shorthand in British independent education, yet it carries historical baggage that does not reflect who we are or what we do.

To understand why Channing Junior School isn’t a prep school – and why that distinction matters – it helps to look at where the term originates. Historically, prep (preparatory) schools were created for one purpose: to prepare young boys for entry into senior boarding schools, coaching them relentlessly for entrance exams like the 11+ or Common Entrance. Education was viewed through a narrow, transactional lens – a race to pass a single hurdle.

Channing operates on an entirely different premise.

First and foremost, we are a through school. From the moment a girl joins us in Reception, she secures her place in an educational journey that spans all the way to Sixth Form.

Because our pupils do not face the hurdle of 11+ entrance exams to move into the Senior School, we are freed from the treadmill of “teaching to the test”. Instead of spending Years 5 and 6 drilling exam papers, managing high stakes stress, and narrowing the curriculum and co-curriculum, our girls spend those vital years expanding their horizons.

Without the shadow of the 11+ hanging over the classroom, learning at Channing Junior School is rich, immersive and unhurried. Our broad and balanced curriculum encourages girls to be Fearless Learners, to take intellectual risks, ask big questions, and embrace mistakes as part of growing.

We take a genuinely holistic view of each and every child’s development. Programmes like Philosophy and Character Education foster empathy, critical thinking, and respectful debate. Frameworks such as Friendology empower girls with the social and emotional confidence to build healthy, lasting friendships. From quasi-professional drama and music ensembles to over 100 co-curricular clubs, creativity and curiosity are given space to flourish.

Our goal is not short-term exam performance, but helping pupils acquire a lifelong love of learning. We want our girls to be intellectually curious, intrinsically motivated, and happy, not just prepped for a test.

Skeptics might ask: If you don’t coach for exams, do academic standards suffer?

The evidence speaks for itself. Year after year, girls who join us in the Junior School go on to perform above the average of all our pupils at A Level.

When girls learn in an environment rooted in psychological safety, warmth, and academic ambition rather than cramming, they build genuine subject mastery and resilience. By protecting childhood and nurturing confidence in the early formative years, we lay the ultimate foundation for exceptional academic success later in life.

Channing Junior School isn’t a prep school because we aren’t preparing girls for a test, we are preparing them for life.
