A Day in the Life of Channing Junior School

At Channing Junior School, we offer an enriching and exciting syllabus beyond the confines of a rigid curriculum. Creativity and innovation are developed from the Early Years and across Key Stages 1 and 2.

A Day in the Life of Channing Senior School

The Senior School is a place of great opportunities, Years 7, 8 and 9 are the years to learn, make mistakes, try new things and discover where your true talents lie.

Character Education

We felt that our Junior School pupils would benefit from being able to refer visibly to a set of defined character traits with accompanying tangible characters, which we could weave through every aspect of their educational experience. Pupils and staff were invited to share their ideas about what makes a Channing girl and what we want a Channing girl to be like. Thus, the Channing Characters were born!

The Classics and Drama departments took 20 students in Years 11-13 to watch Sophocles' tragedy 'Oedipus,' starring Mark Strong and Leslie Manville, at Wyndham's Theatre. First performed in 429 BCE in Athens during the City Dionysia, a festival to Dionysus, the play tells the story of Oedipus, the king of Thebes, as he discovers that his life is not what it seems. Over the course of two hours, we watched as Oedipus' life slowly unravelled around him, physically represented in the dismantling of the scenery, causing a trail of devastation and destruction. Although first performed 2500 years ago, questions about what it means to be a good leader and to what extent we can control our own destiny ensure that this tragedy remains eternally relevant.

Sixth Form students were given the engaging opportunity to partake in an afternoon of interview skill sessions. We began with a short introduction from a speaker from ‘InvestIn’, a company that specialises in helping students with work experience and interview skills. In this talk she highlighted the important techniques needed to ace an interview, for example eye contact and having a friendly yet professional demeanour. Afterwards we had a carousel of three different activities; a mock interview with Channing parents and teachers, a team building exercise and an in tray task where we had to read emails and respond to them appropriately in order of urgency. Overall, we found this an extremely educational experience, and we will certainly apply the advice we’ve received throughout the sessions to our professional lives.
