Last Friday’s recital was a truly captivating event, showcasing the incredible talent and musical diversity of our students. The evening began with a smooth yet energetic rendition of Brahms’ ‘Hungarian Dance No. 5,’ expertly performed by Georgie M from 10ZB. Her skilful handling of the clarinet’s contrasting sections added depth and excitement to the piece, setting the tone for the rest of the evening. Following Georgie, Yasmin L from 9JB took the stage with her violin, delivering a stunning performance of the Allegro from Mendelssohn’s Concerto in D minor. The unaccompanied sections highlighted her technical proficiency, as she navigated the piece’s wide tessitura and rapid shifts in tempo with ease and grace.
Next, we were treated to something a little different: Rafi C from 8VS delighted the audience with a charming rendition of Skaila Kanga’s ‘Hippopotamus Rag’ on the harp. This playful and sweet composition was followed by ‘Seesaw,’ a more melodic piece that maintained the emotional depth of Rafi’s performance. Then, the atmosphere shifted to a more jazzy vibe as Eliana P from 9EHi brought the house down with her lively interpretation of ‘Funk’ by Alan Vizzutti on the trumpet. As its name suggests, the piece was full of energy and groove, getting everyone in the audience tapping their feet along with its infectious rhythm.
The recital concluded with a set of traditional Hungarian songs performed by Borbála C from 12EHa. Her rendition of ‘Aranyalmás az én selyem keszkenőm,’ which translates to ‘I have golden apples on my silk handkerchief,’ was particularly moving. Borbála’s powerful voice and calm stage presence perfectly captured the essence of these folk melodies, leaving the audience spellbound. You can listen to a recording of the event here:
