Channing’s Partnership Clubs in Action

Posted: 14th October 2024

Over the past few weeks, our Partnership clubs and activities have begun across both the Junior and Senior Schools. Pupils from Brookfield, St. Joseph’s, Whitehall Park, and Highgate Primary Schools, along with our Junior School students, are taking part in a variety of clubs led by Channing staff and Sixth Form volunteers.

Problem-Solving Club

As Sixth Formers, we lead a weekly Problem-Solving Club for children aged 9 to 11 from the Junior School and Highgate Primary School. Our aim is to create a fun and engaging environment where young learners can thrive. Each session introduces challenging puzzles and collaborative activities designed to encourage critical thinking and teamwork. Through our guidance and support, we inspire a love for mathematics and help develop the children’s problem-solving skills. We volunteer because we enjoy working with younger pupils, love Maths, and find it a fun break from our weekly routine. The children also make friends from other schools and enhance their puzzle-solving skills.

Science Club

Every Wednesday after school, I, along with a few Year 12 students, assist Year 5 and 6 pupils from Channing Junior School, Brookfield, Whitehall Park, and Highgate Primary Schools in a Science Club held in one of the Senior School labs. This allows us to explore exciting science topics together; for example, last week, we examined real human tissue samples! This experience not only fascinated all of us but also allowed us to rediscover the thrill of experiments we often take for granted during our studies. Additionally, this club helps us build our confidence and communication skills.

Minimus

On Tuesday afternoons, we welcome Year 6 pupils from three local primary schools and Channing Junior School to join our Minimus Club. In this club, we teach an introductory course to Latin and classical studies. We cover basic Latin phrases to help pupils get familiar with the language and vocabulary while also exploring elements of ancient culture and lifestyle. It’s a rewarding experience to nurture a love for Latin in younger students.
