The English A Level cohort, along with a group of talented Year 10 and 11 GCSE English pupils and invited guests from St Aloysius’ Sixth Form, were treated to a creative writing workshop led by the World Champion Slam Poet, Harry Baker.
Harry kicked off the session by performing a poem about an item that brings him joy: his wellington boots. Inspired by his performance, we were then tasked with writing our own poems about things that bring us joy. The range of items chosen was as diverse as our group, including Ugg boots, keys, cuddly toys, and a variety of food items.
After the workshop, the entire Channing Sixth Form, the writing group, and guests from Parliament Hill School enjoyed a special performance from Harry. His poems were thought-provoking, raw, heartwarming, and, most importantly, fun! We are grateful to Harry, the staff, and the pupils involved in organising this incredible event. We look forward to reading some of the creative work produced during the workshop.
Pupil Testimonials
“We really enjoyed Harry Baker’s poetry workshop and performance. Slam poetry is not part of the A-level course, so it gave us a fresh perspective on modern poetry. His eclectic mix of hilarious and thought-provoking poems made for an amazing performance! On a personal note, we both loved creative writing at GCSE, so we appreciated the opportunity to get creative in a supportive environment and be inspired by a professional poet.”
“Harry performed some of his poems for us, many of which touched on mental health themes. One particular poem, written for his nephew, his younger self, and anyone currently experiencing bullying, spoke to the importance of embracing differences. Another memorable piece was his poem titled ‘Wonderful,’ which reminds us never to take the beauty of life for granted. A line that stood out to me was, ‘you cannot be in traffic without being traffic.’ It made me reflect on how I am not merely watching life go by but actively living it too. I am grateful to have had the chance to hear Harry live and recommend his poetry to everyone.”
