Last week, 31 intrepid German learners set off to improve their knowledge of language, life and Lebkuchen in Germany.
Here is their story ….
Die Reise und die Unterkunft in der Jugendherberge:
We left Channing in the afternoon in a special coach and arrived at Heathrow airport. We were given some free time to buy our dinner and explore. The flight was a smooth experience and we encountered no problems on the way. Upon arrival at the München Airport, we then took a bus to the Jugendherberge. We were very glad to arrive, as it was approaching midnight! We didn’t take long to decide whose rooms were whose and who slept where and we had a good night’s sleep and got prepared for the next day. Es hat viel Spaß gemacht!
Yasmin, Year 9
Der Deutschunterricht:
The German language lessons were very fun, the teachers were nice and made the long lessons feel short and interactive. We sang songs and learnt some very useful phrases for our Einkaufen auf dem Weihnachtsmarkt!
Shahar, Year 9
Das Treffen im deutschen Museum & Schulbesuch:
On the first day, we went to a science museum with students from St Anna Gymnasium. We walked around the museum with them while getting to know them before walking back along the River Isar to their school to eat the cakes that they had kindly baked. They then gave us a tour around the school. It was very fun. Afterwards, we visited the beautiful St Anna Kirche where we were treated to a spontaneous organ recital.
Emma, Year 9
Deutsches Theater:
On Thursday we set off to the theatre to see a German musical version of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol: eine Weihnachtsgeschichte. We had amazing seats in the theatre and were able to improve our German by watching and trying to understand. It had some great costumes and characters. We really enjoyed it!
Riana, Year 9
Konzert und mehr:
On Saturday evening of our last full day, me and the other Year 10s on the trip had the wonderful opportunity to go and see ‘Der Madrigalchor’, an advanced a capella group, sing live at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater München in Munich. We made our way over straight from the Moana 2 viewing and arrived at 7 o’clock, just in time for the start of the concert, which was a series of German classical pieces composed from as early as the 16th century all the way up till the late 20th century. It was certainly an extraordinary experience to hear the classical music of another culture live during our visit! We also enjoyed our outing to the fascinating NS Dokumentationszentrum, where we explored the history of the rise of the Nazis and the role of Munich specifically.
Flores, Year 10
Im Kino:
On the third day, we went to see Moana 2 (known as Vaiana in Germany) in the cinema. The film was in German, but it was surprisingly easy to understand. Es war sehr toll und interessant! Watching Moana 2 in German helped me learn more vocab, and the songs were exciting to listen to. The cinema was extremely big and very immersive. As the movie was a cartoon, it was easy to follow along. We really enjoyed this experience and the German trip as a whole.
Aenea, Sofia & Victoria, Year 9
Bavaria Filmstadt:
We went to a film town which was really fun because we got to see some of the sets of scenes in the movies that were set there and we also got to see (and even try ourselves) how they used to do things before technology/greenscreens were used as much in movies and instead moving backdrops on a roller were used. As well as this, we went into the original submarine boat used in the film Das Boot and into a spaceship set. Es war fantastisch!
Charlotte, Year 9
Schloss Nymphenburg:
On the last day, we got to go see the Nymphenburg Castle (which is really a palace) where the last of the Bavarian royal family lived and died. We got to go around the rooms and see the wonderful architecture around the palace. It was really beautiful.
Edlyn, Year 9
Alte Pinakothek:
We went to a huge art museum in Munich called Alte Pinakothek. We had the chance to explore it by ourselves, where we saw many amazing Bilder. There were also some cool sculptures done by famous artists! It was such a nice place to see on our last day, and it gave us a chance to explore different German styles of art.
Mimi, Year 9
Auf dem Weihnachtsmarkt:
The highlight of our trip was when we visited three lovely Christmas markets and explored them. We ordered our food in German and looked around at the traditional German foods, such as Lebkuchen, Brezel and Schnitzel. We went to famous ones such as Weihnachtsmarkt am Marienplatz, Weihnachtsmarkt am Wittelsbacherplatz and Weihnachtsdorf im Residenzhof. It was very fun.
Bayla, Year 9
Dorm Inspection:
Student perspective:
On the evening of the last day, we cleaned our rooms and packed up, ready for an inspection made by Frau P and Miss Lindsay. Some groups performed songs, gave gifts and offered candy bribes in order to tempt the teachers. Es war sehr spannend!
Rory, Year 9
Teacher perspective:
Inspecting the cleanliness of hostel dorms before we leave is not usually a task I relish. However, on this trip, students exceeded our expectations. In an effort to influence their impervious judges, they serenaded us with Délibes, created raps in German, plied us with Plätzchen and performed a dance to Bodo Wartke’s tongue-twister Barbaras Rhabarberbar. And their dorms were clean! Our students were an absolute pleasure to accompany to Germany, and I would like to thank Ms Lindsay, Frau Loosli, and Clémence, our French language assistant, all of whom went above and beyond to make the inaugural Channing trip to Munich a huge success.

European Parliament Junior Ambassadors:
Last Thursday, Year 12 European Parliament Junior Ambassadors gave lessons to Year 8 students about the history of the EU and its importance for democracy. The Year 8s learnt facts from the history of the EU, from when the UK first joined in 1973 to the number of countries that are current members of the EU. It was a great experience to practise our presenting skills and the Year 8 students were very engaged. We loved answering their questions and playing a few fun kahoots at the end!
