As Headmistress of Channing School, I have been thrilled to share our vision for the next decade of our remarkable institution with staff, students and parents! This year, as we celebrate our 140th anniversary, we’ve unveiled five strategic objectives that will guide us toward our 150th anniversary in 2035. What makes this moment particularly special is knowing that many of our youngest pupils – our current Reception class will leave Channing in 2038 – are part of this journey from the very beginning.
Our vision of Girls Enjoying Success remains as relevant as ever. Our mission is to foster fearless learners through inspiring education, exceptional co-curricular opportunities and meaningful partnerships, creating bespoke outcomes for every child: “Each of us is intended to have a character all our own, to be what no other can exactly be and do what no other can exactly do.” These beautiful words of our namesake William Ellery Channing encapsulate exactly what we aim to achieve.
In addition our Unitarian ethos encourages our pupils to be intellectually curious, open-minded and respectful. We build on the power of an all-girls education to develop kind, confident, articulate young women who are ready for life’s challenges. In a world where artificial intelligence continues to grow in influence, we’re focused on developing the uniquely human skills that will set our students apart. What might a school curriculum – and co-curriculum – look like, to deliver these vital skills and values? How will our teachers engage with the latest research to support and stretch every child in their learning?
We’re particularly proud of our commitment to social impact and environmental sustainability. Looking ahead to 2035, we know these aspects will be more crucial than ever. Our students need to be prepared not just academically, but as responsible citizens ready to make positive contributions to our world.
Now comes the exciting part – we’re inviting our entire school community to help shape this vision. After all, who better to help design the future of our school than those who already make it what it is?
Our motto “Conabor” – I will try – has guided generations of Channing girls, and it continues to inspire us as we embark on this new chapter. As we look toward 2035, I’m confident that together we’ll create an even stronger Channing, while staying true to our founding values and our commitment to helping every girl enjoy success as she defines it.
I can’t wait to see what the Channing of 2035 will look like.
