Miss Hamalis’ Bulletin – Monday 8 September 2025

Posted: 8th September 2025

Miss Hamalis, Head Of Channing Junior School

Dear Parents and Carers

The start of a new school year always brings with it such a wonderful sense of energy and possibility. From the joyful chatter of friends reconnecting after the summer, to the curiosity and wide-eyed wonder of our new Reception girls taking their very first steps into Junior School life, the atmosphere has been alive with anticipation and optimism for the year ahead.

Last week, pupils from Year 3 to Year 13 gathered in the Sports Hall at the Senior School for our first whole school assembly of the year. Normally, our Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 girls would join us too, but with the exciting building works underway to create a brand new STEM block complete with DT facilities, space was a little limited this time. The assembly focused on Living the Channing Promise, a powerful reminder that our values are not just words on a poster, but actions we choose every day. Through reflections, role-plays and thoughtful contributions from our Junior and Senior School Head Girls, we explored how kindness, empathy, curiosity, resilience, fairness and inclusivity help us all to grow into the very best versions of ourselves. Agatha and Yaya, our wonderful Year 6 Autumn Term Head Girls, were simply outstanding – so confident, animated and inspiring as they represented the Junior School with such pride.

This morning, we came together once again, this time as a Junior School in its entirety, for our first assembly of the academic year. It was an especially memorable moment for our Reception girls, who experienced their very first Junior School assembly. There was a lovely sense of togetherness as they sat, wide-eyed and curious, watching the older girls carefully model how to sit, listen and participate, setting such a positive example of what it means to be part of our Channing community.

Under the theme New Year, New Start, we welcomed our new pupils and staff, revisited the Channing Promise and Channing Characters, and reflected on the qualities that will help us make the most of the opportunities ahead. From Empathy Rabbit encouraging us to think of others, to Perseverance Squirrel reminding us to keep going when things feel tricky, each Channing Character offers a gentle guide as we navigate the year together. We also introduced our updated behaviour policy and celebrated the many ways we recognise positive choices: from Channing Character stickers and House Points, to Girls Enjoying Success Awards, all designed to ensure every pupil feels supported, valued and inspired.

Both assemblies were a powerful reminder of what makes Channing so special: a community built on kindness, curiosity and courage, where every girl is encouraged to flourish. As I watched the girls embracing Curiosity Fox’s love of exploration, Resilience Robin’s determination to bounce back when faced with challenges and Responsibility Badger’s sense of duty, I felt incredibly proud. These are the qualities that will not only shape their learning this year, but also their character for years to come.

On the subject of celebrations, I am thrilled to share some exciting news: Channing has been shortlisted for the Talk Education Awards in the Community Engagement category! Huge congratulations to our Social Impact Team, this recognition is a testament to their dedication, compassion and hard work in making a meaningful difference in the world around us. Their efforts embody Bravery Mole’s courage to lead change and Empathy Rabbit’s unwavering care for others.

Finally, I am very much looking forward to welcoming many of you tomorrow evening to our Welcome Evening on Tuesday 9 September from 6.00 – 8.00pm. During the evening, I will be speaking alongside Mrs Brant (Deputy Head) and Mr Davies (Deputy Head Academic) before introducing our Form and CoForm Teachers, Specialist Teachers, Teaching Assistants and Support Staff. You will then have the opportunity to visit your one of your daughter’s year group form rooms, meet her year group team and gain an insight into the exciting year ahead.

This evening is always such a highlight at the start of the academic year – a wonderful opportunity to come together as a community, connect with one another and celebrate our shared values. It’s also a chance for me to meet and chat with many of you in person, which is something I always look forward to as we embark on this next chapter of your daughter’s journey at Channing.

With warm wishes for the academic year ahead

Miss Dina Hamalis
Head of the Junior School

Staff Contact Information

Information

Please find the email contact details of the staff: JS Key Contact information. Please could we ask that your specific query is directed to the appropriate individual and anything of a more serious nature is directed to a member of the Senior Team. Please note that Miss Hamalis needs to approve all requests for absences so please send them via the Junior School Office: jsoffice@channing.co.uk

In order to prevent unnecessary awkwardness and/or embarrassment, please remember to address members of staff by their title and surname.

Please be mindful that staff may not pick up emails immediately (teachers will, of course, not be checking emails when they are teaching, running clubs or supervising pupils at break and lunchtimes) and may choose to take time to investigate the matter before responding. However, they will endeavour to answer your queries within 24 hours. Please do not think that a lack of instant response means a lack of interest on the part of the member of staff.

Please note that staff are not expected to reply to emails outside normal school hours, weekends or during school holidays. If you have an emergency which needs to be dealt with before school next opens, please email: jsoffice@channing.co.uk. Please do not send communications or information to communication@channing.co.uk or info@channing.co.uk.

You can find the Channing Promise on the school website. This is something the whole school community upholds and underlines our values of respect, tolerance and inclusivity. We know you will be nothing short of respectful in your communications with staff and you can expect the same in return.

Events

Welcome Evening: Tuesday 9 September (6 - 8pm)

We look forward to welcoming you to our annual Welcome Evening on Tuesday 9 September from 6.00 – 8.00pm. If you have two daughters at Channing, we advise parents/carers to split up to attend the separate talks. If this is not possible, or you are a single parent/carer household, please select one talk to attend. Please note that this is an adult-only event, so we kindly ask that daughters and other children are not brought along. All information from the evening will be shared on Firefly, our parent portal, after the event.

Reception, Year 1 & Year 2 ~ Fairseat Hall First

Please note, if your daughter is in Reception, Year 1 or Year 2, you will be in Fairseat Hall first at 6.00pm. You will then go to your daughter’s form room at 7.00pm to meet the year group Form Teachers and Teaching Assistants. If your daughter is in Reception, you will meet her Form/CoForm Teacher and Teaching Assistants in the Art and DT Room.

Year 3, Year 4, Year 5 & Year 6 ~ Form Rooms First

If your daughter is in Year 3 – Year 6, you will go to one of your daughter’s year group form rooms first at 6pm to meet the year group Form/CoForm Teachers and Teaching Assistants. This will then be followed by a talk from Miss Hamalis (Head of the Junior School) in Fairseat Hall at 7pm.

We politely ask all parents/carers to please adhere to the one way system around school (following the signs). Members of staff will be available to point you in the right direction.

Individual & Sibling Photographs: Friday 19 September

On Friday 19 September, the girls will have individual and Junior School sibling photos taken. The girls can wear either their summer or winter uniform; however, we ask that siblings please wear the same uniform and for everyone to be smart and tidy with their hair fully back (if it is longer than shoulder length) with black, brown, white or Channing blue hair accessories.

All girls should come into school dressed in their school uniform. If they have PE or Forest School on this day, then they should bring in their PE or Forest School uniform in a separate bag and will then change into this as necessary, after their photograph has been taken.

RE Talks & Workshops

As part of our ongoing commitment to enrich the Religious Education curriculum, we would like to invite you to share your knowledge, experiences and insights with your daughter’s year group.

If you have a festival or celebration that you feel connected to and would be happy to talk about, we invite you to complete this Google form link. This form will be sent out at the start of each term so please ensure your responses are for the Autumn Term only. Once we receive your response, we will be in touch to explore how your talk might complement the pupils’ learning in their RE lessons. Please note that talks cannot be arranged through your daughter’s Form Teacher.

The deadline for completing the form is Friday 19 September at 3.00pm. Requests submitted after this date may not be considered due to the busy school calendar and existing commitments.

Talks typically include sharing the history and significance of a religious festival, how it is traditionally celebrated, and any personal or family traditions you observe. You may also wish to highlight its importance within your community or culture. To help bring the event to life for pupils, you are welcome to bring along items, photographs or other materials.

We kindly ask that talks and visits do not involve food, due to the wide range of allergies and dietary preferences within our school community. If you have any questions, please contact our RE Lead, Miss Parmar, at dparmar@channing.co.uk.

When completing the form, please also provide details of the number of adults who will be involved in the talk. This information cannot be amended afterwards and will help us make the necessary arrangements.

We greatly appreciate your willingness to support the school in this way and we are confident that your involvement will have a positive impact on the pupils’ understanding and appreciation of different cultures and traditions.

Music Matters ~ KS2 Tomplay

We have secured a special Channing discount for both Visiting Music Staff (VMS) and pupils at the Junior School for Tomplay, an excellent digital music practice platform.

Tomplay provides high-quality digital sheet music with interactive backing tracks, enabling pupils to practise in a more engaging and motivating way. Pilot projects we ran last year showed fantastic results, with pupils responding enthusiastically. Mrs Munro (Head of Music) is most frequently asked about how to boost motivation and how to encourage effective practising. She feels that Tomplay is a tool that supports both.

For pupils preparing for ABRSM exams, Tomplay also includes the exam syllabus for selected instruments, making it an especially useful resource.

The discounted annual subscription is currently priced at £57 excluding VAT.

To sign up and access your discount, please complete the form here. This will allow us to provide you with your discount code and ensure your daughter’s Tomplay account is linked directly to their Music Teacher. Please fill in the form by Monday 15 September.

We are excited to be able to offer this opportunity and hope it will be a valuable addition to your daughter’s musical journey.
