Miss Hamalis’ Bulletin – Monday 6 October 2025

Posted: 6th October 2025

Miss Hamalis, Head Of Channing Junior School

Dear Parents & Carers

Tomorrow morning, we will come together as a community to celebrate our Ready, Steady, Cook Harvest Special assembly – a joyful and interactive occasion that will remind us how lucky we are to belong to such a thoughtful and connected school family. The assembly will encourage the girls to appreciate food as a gift from nature and to reflect on gratitude, sharing and stewardship.

I’m sure they will enjoy watching me host a friendly cooking challenge between Mrs Brant (Deputy Head) and Mr Davies (Deputy Head Academic), with plenty of humour and audience participation along the way. I know that none of the girls will have heard of the original Ready, Steady, Cook TV show (which definitely shows my age!), but I’m confident they’ll love the energy, laughter and teamwork at the heart of our own version.

Beneath the fun, the girls will be reminded of the importance of giving thanks for what we have, sharing with others, and recognising our responsibility to care for the world around us. As always, the assembly will bring many of our Channing Promise values to life.

Moments like these remind us how powerful it is when pupils, staff and families come together with a shared purpose. The Junior School has a long tradition of combining fun and laughter with learning and compassion – values that lie at the heart of the Channing experience.

In that same spirit, our Harvest Festival Collection for The Alexandra Wylie Tower Foundation (AWTF) will run until Friday 10 October. AWTF, set up by a Channing family in memory of their daughter, supports families in North London who are experiencing food poverty, and our donations make a genuine difference to their daily lives. We would be most grateful if you could contribute by sending in non-perishable food or household items. Please ask your daughter to place her donations in one of the blue-labelled Food Bank bins in the courtyard at the front of school. Further details can be found below.

Our girls learn so much through these acts of kindness. They see how their generosity helps others and begin to understand what it means to be part of a wider community. This spirit of empathy and responsibility feels particularly significant in light of the tragic events in Manchester, reminding us all of the importance of supporting one another with care, respect and understanding. The Channing community continues to exemplify the compassion and strength that define us, qualities that shine most brightly when we come together.

In that same spirit of unity and kindness, I am proud to highlight two special fundraising efforts within our community this month. A group of forty Channing mums and girls, known as The Ziffs, are running in memory of Luna Z’s (2C) younger sister, Celine, to raise funds for Great Ormond Street Hospital as part of the RBC Race for the Kids. This is a wonderful example of families coming together with love and purpose, even in the face of great sadness, to make a positive difference. You can read more and offer your support here: GOSH Charity – Celine The Queen.

Meanwhile, our very own Miss Crossdale (Teaching Assistant) is taking up her knitting needles for Knitober! She, too, is supporting the same cause as she knits every day throughout October. In her own words: “As someone who sprained my ankle on the first and only run I did, a physical challenge is not for me! But a crafty challenge – now that one I’ll accept!” You can offer your support here: Miss Crossdale’s Knitober.

Her enthusiasm and creativity reflect so much of what makes Channing special: everyone finding their own way to contribute, give back, and support others with kindness.

The Harvest season reminds us how much we have to be thankful for, not only the food on our tables, but also the warmth, generosity and spirit that make our Channing community so special. Thank you for everything you do to nurture that spirit in your daughters and in our school.

Finally, as we celebrate together, we also wish all our families marking Sukkot a very happy and joyful festival.

With warm wishes

Miss Dina Hamalis
Head of the Junior School

Please could we ask that your specific query is directed to the appropriate individual and anything of a more serious nature is directed to a member of the Senior Team. Please note that Miss Hamalis needs to approve all requests for absences so please send them via the Junior School Office: jsoffice@channing.co.uk

In order to prevent unnecessary awkwardness and/or embarrassment, please remember to address members of staff by their title and surname.

Please be mindful that staff may not pick up emails immediately (teachers will, of course, not be checking emails when they are teaching, running clubs or supervising pupils at break and lunchtimes) and may choose to take time to investigate the matter before responding. However, they will endeavour to answer your queries within 24 hours. Please do not think that a lack of instant response means a lack of interest on the part of the member of staff.

Please note that staff are not expected to reply to emails outside normal school hours, weekends or during school holidays. If you have an emergency which needs to be dealt with before school next opens, please email: jsoffice@channing.co.uk. Please do not send communications or information to communication@channing.co.uk or info@channing.co.uk.

Calendar & Events

Harvest Festival Collection: until Friday 10 October

We will be running a Harvest Festival collection for The Alexandra Wylie Tower Foundation (AWTF) until Friday 10 October. In keeping with our community spirit, we would appreciate your generous donations. Please ask your daughter to place any donations in one of the blue labelled Food Bank collection bins in the courtyard at the front of school.

Suggested items for donations include: washing tablets, tinned/canned produce, pasta (and sauces), rice, spices, olive oil, juices, stocks, cereals, sugar, salt, tea and coffee. AWTF are also in need of the following items: long-life milk, cereal, crisps and tinned corned beef. Please ensure all items are long-life produce, as regrettably, fresh items cannot be donated. Additionally, all donations must be within their sell-by and use-by dates, as AWTF cannot distribute expired food. We ask that you kindly check dates before donating.

We are delighted to help support such a worthy cause. We feel strongly as a school community that we should help raise awareness of food poverty and engage particularly with our pupils about social responsibility, but, most importantly, help those families who are really struggling.

ABRSM Practical Music Examinations: Week Beginning Monday 1 December

We will be holding Autumn Term Practical music examinations over two or three days during the week beginning Monday 1 December for candidates in both the Junior and Senior School. These examinations are also open to candidates who have practical music tuition outside of school, providing their teacher has stated that they are ready to take an ABRSM Practical examination this term.

We need parental consent before we enter candidates, therefore parents need to complete the online form by 4pm on Monday 13 October at the latest. Regrettably, we will be unable to process late applications.

Club Cancellations: Future Dates to Note

Occasionally, clubs need to be cancelled in advance, particularly when whole-school events are taking place. If this happens, you can sign your daughter up for Late Owls, or she can be collected at her usual dismissal time. You will also receive a reminder text the day before so that you can make the necessary arrangements.

Same-day cancellations are rare and we always try to avoid them. However, they can sometimes be unavoidable, whether the club is a free, a staff-run activity or an externally run, paid-for session. In these cases, your daughter can be collected at her usual dismissal time, be signed up for Late Owls or remain in Club Waiters free of charge until the club’s normal end time, at which point she will be brought to the door for dismissal.

Please note that if a paid-for club is cancelled, whether in advance or on the day, you will not be charged.

Please see below for the clubs that will be cancelled this term due to whole-school events. This list will be updated weekly, so please check this section carefully:

Competitions & Challenges for the Girls

Micro, Mini & Junior Duke Award: Reception - Year 6

Girls from Reception to Year 6 are warmly encouraged to take part in the Junior Duke Award – an exciting programme that helps them develop valuable life skills while building confidence, resilience and independence. Each level of the award invites the girls to complete up to ten fun and practical challenges, ranging from creative projects to domestic tasks, all designed to make a positive impact on their everyday lives. At the end of the Summer Term, those who complete their level will be proudly presented with a badge and certificate in celebration of their achievement. The Junior Duke perfectly reflects our Channing Characters, encouraging perseverance, curiosity and independence in all who take part.

If your daughter would like to participate, please complete this form by 8am on Monday 13 October. £10 will be added to your termly bill. Unfortunately, any late submissions will not be accepted.

  • Micro Duke – Reception
  • Silver Mini Duke – Year 1
  • Gold Mini Duke – Year 2
  • Bronze Junior Duke – Year 3
  • Silver Junior Duke – Year 4
  • Gold Junior Duke – Year 5
  • Platinum Junior Duke – Year 6

Our Junior Duke Leads, Miss Grayson (KS2) and Miss Marshall (EY & KS1), will support any girl who is keen to take part and develop skills beyond the curriculum. Participation is entirely optional, but it is a wonderful opportunity to nurture independence, perseverance and a sense of personal achievement. If your daughter chooses to join the Junior Duke Award, her challenge workbook will be sent home after half term so she can begin working through the activities independently. There will be termly breaktime meetings where girls can share their progress, celebrate their successes and encourage one another. In the final half of the Summer Term, successful participants will be proudly presented with their certificates and badges in assembly.

Considerate Driving & Parking

Information

A reminder that the minibus gates at the rear of the school (by Lauderdale House) are in regular use, so please avoid parking in front of them at any time during the day. Doing so creates a safety risk for pupils, parents and members of the public.

We all play a part in keeping our community safe and harmonious. Please support one another by driving considerately, parking legally, and showing care for our neighbours, pedestrians and fellow members of the Channing community. To help ease congestion, we offer Early Birds from 7.30am and operate staggered collection times after school. Thank you for working with us to make drop-off and pick-up safe and smooth for everyone.
