Miss Hamalis’ Bulletin – Monday 24 November 2025

Posted: 24th November 2025

Miss Hamalis, Head Of Channing Junior School

Dear Parents & Carers

At the beginning of last week, I had the privilege of attending the Girls’ Schools Association (GSA) Annual Conference to support Mrs Hughes, our Headmistress, in her role as GSA President for this academic year. The theme, Fearless Females: Leadership that Lifts Girls Up, beautifully captured the spirit of the event. Over two inspiring days, we heard from an impressive range of speakers: Dr Kaitlyn Regehr, who explored how schools can take a thoughtful, whole-school approach to managing digital habits; Evelyn Forde MBE, who spoke compellingly about creating cultures of belonging where every girl feels able to lead; Vivienne Porritt OBE, who challenged us to rethink what leadership looks like for women in education; Jess Phillips MP, Minister for Safeguarding and Violence against Women and Girls who offered her characteristically candid insights into the political landscape; and journalists and Channing parents (Mr) Hugo Rifkind and (Ms) Lucy Manning, who brought a national perspective on the issues shaping girls’ lives today. Annie and Natasha, our own Senior School Head Girls, spoke with maturity, clarity and characteristic Channing confidence in their Girls in Society conversation. I felt particularly proud, as when I first joined Channing as Head of the Junior School, Natasha was in Year 5; seeing her now as a poised and thoughtful Head Girl in Year 13 felt especially meaningful.

Throughout the conference, one message resonated strongly: girls’ schools remain powerful, relevant and deeply impactful. This commitment to empowering women sits at the heart of the wider benefits of all-girls’ education, particularly for our youngest pupils.

In an all-girls’ environment, pupils grow up in a space designed entirely with their development in mind. They have the freedom to be themselves, discover who they are and take risks without the pressure of comparison or stereotype. Many girls feel more self-conscious in mixed settings; in girls’ schools, that pressure is lifted. They speak up more readily, volunteer answers without hesitation and share their opinions with confidence because they know their voices are valued.

Girls’ schools also create an environment where ambition is encouraged and achievement is celebrated without caveat. There is no sense of certain subjects belonging to one gender. Whether a pupil loves science, art, cricket, computing, drama, creative writing or anything in between, she can pursue her passions freely and without stereotype. This creates a culture where learning feels expansive, and where academic curiosity can truly flourish.

Leadership development is another cornerstone. Every leadership opportunity in our school is held by a girl – whether as a School Council or Sustainability representative, Channing Character Champion, House Captain, Digital Leader or Head Girl. Pupils grow up surrounded by strong female role models, both their peers and their teachers, who show daily that leadership can look many different ways. This visibility is powerful, allowing girls to imagine themselves in positions of responsibility long before they step into them.

Girls’ schools also nurture emotional confidence and wellbeing. Pupils learn to support one another, celebrate each other’s successes and navigate challenges with empathy. They form friendships rooted in collaboration rather than competition, which strengthens resilience and social awareness. They learn early that their voices matter, that authenticity is embraced and that success is not a single path, but something deeply individual.

Ultimately, at Channing we empower pupils to define success on their own terms. Free from the social constraints that can sometimes emerge in co-educational settings, our girls feel able to take intellectual risks, try new activities, step into leadership roles and challenge outdated stereotypes. They leave us feeling seen, supported and wholly capable of shaping their future with confidence. This is exactly what we strive to cultivate every day: an environment where girls enjoy success – whatever that looks like for them – and grow into thoughtful, confident and compassionate young people who are ready to make their mark on the world.

It was such a pleasure to end the week with our inaugural Reception Parents’ Tea Party alongside the Senior Team. It was wonderful to see so many Reception parents enjoying tea, cake and a relaxed chat together. Several of you asked whether we had used our well-known ‘magic oven’ to bake the cakes, just as we do at the 4+ playdates, which made me smile – it is currently having a well-earned rest before January!

In the Spring Term, we will also be hosting a tea party for parents of other year groups as part of our Open Classroom event on Tuesday 24 March, 4.00pm–5.00pm, so everyone will have the chance to come together and share in the same sense of community.

Finally, we send our warmest wishes to all members of our community who will be celebrating St Andrew’s Day this weekend.

With warm wishes

Miss Dina Hamalis
Head of the Junior School

Please find the email contact details of the staff: JS Key Contact information. Please could we ask that your specific query is directed to the appropriate individual and anything of a more serious nature is directed to a member of the Senior Team. Please note that Miss Hamalis needs to approve all requests for absences so please send them via the Junior School Office: jsoffice@channing.co.uk

In order to prevent unnecessary awkwardness and/or embarrassment, please remember to address members of staff by their title and surname.

Please be mindful that staff may not pick up emails immediately (teachers will, of course, not be checking emails when they are teaching, running clubs or supervising pupils at break and lunchtimes) and may choose to take time to investigate the matter before responding. However, they will endeavour to answer your queries within 24 hours. Please do not think that a lack of instant response means a lack of interest on the part of the member of staff.

Please note that staff are not expected to reply to emails outside normal school hours, weekends or during school holidays. If you have an emergency which needs to be dealt with before school next opens, please email: jsoffice@channing.co.uk. Please do not send communications or information to communication@channing.co.uk or info@channing.co.uk.

You can find the Channing Promise on the school website. This is something the whole school community upholds and underlines our values of respect, tolerance and inclusivity. We know you will be nothing short of respectful in your communications with staff and you can expect the same in return.

Calendar & Events

Waterlow Food Bank Collection: Monday 17 November - Friday 28 November

As a reminder, we will be contributing to the Alexandra Wylie Tower Foundation’s food bank until Friday 28 November. If your daughter is in Waterlow House, please ask her to place donations in one of the blue, labelled ‘Food Bank’ collection bins in the courtyard. There will be three more collections running throughout the year, with girls in each House being asked to donate items. However, all members of the community are very welcome to donate at any time!

This term, the AWTF are in desperate need of the following items: whole milk (long life), pasta, corned beef tins, pasta sauce, crisps, biscuits and toilet roll. However, they would also welcome any of the following suggested items: washing tablets, tinned/canned produce, rice, spices, olive oil, juices, stocks, cereals, sugar, salt, tea and coffee.

Please ensure all items are long-life produce, as regrettably, fresh items cannot be donated, and that all donated items are within their sell by and use by date.

Many thanks in advance to Waterlow for all your support!

Club Cancellations: Future Dates to Note

Occasionally, clubs need to be cancelled in advance, particularly when whole-school events are taking place. If this happens, you can sign your daughter up for Late Owls, or she can be collected at her usual dismissal time. You will also receive a reminder text the day before so that you can make the necessary arrangements.

Same-day cancellations are rare and we always try to avoid them. However, they can sometimes be unavoidable, whether the club is a free, a staff-run activity or an externally run, paid-for session. In these cases, your daughter can be collected at her usual dismissal time, be signed up for Late Owls or remain in Club Waiters free of charge until the club’s normal end time, at which point she will be brought to the door for dismissal.

Please note that if a paid-for club is cancelled, whether in advance or on the day, you will not be charged.

Please see below for the clubs that will be cancelled this term. This list will be updated weekly, so please check this section carefully:

Curriculum Talks Programme: Sign Up

We are pleased to invite all parents and carers to a series of Curriculum Information Evenings, led by our Subject Leads and members of the Junior School Senior Team, in Fairseat Hall. They are designed to help you better understand what your daughter is learning and how you can support her progress at home. Each evening will provide practical advice and an opportunity to engage directly with the staff who lead these subjects. If you would like to attend one or more of these sessions, please sign up using the Google Form linked below.

Entry to the CA Frozen/ Winter-themed Winter Fair: Friday 28 November

Girls need to be collected at an earlier Friday dismissal time and taken to the Winter Fair by a parent/carer. As the Winter Fair is an after school event, all children must be accompanied by a nominated parent/carer including pupils in Years 5 and 6 who normally self-dismiss. Please note that self-dismissal will not be permitted on this day. One parent can be nominated to take multiple girls; please let their Form Teacher know any altered arrangements before Friday. Please note, that in order to make the entry as smooth as possible, some Friday pick-up locations for some forms have been adjusted. Please see below for the information as we will be operating a strictly one-way system.

To help with dismissals, parents must inform Form Teachers (before Friday) of collection  arrangements. This includes those who are helping at the Winter Fair and require another adult to collect  their daughter(s) on their behalf. Please be reminded that all after school clubs/wraparound care provisions will be cancelled due to the Fair (there will be no Late Owls). All parents will be asked to enter the Winter Fair via the black side doors, rather than the Main Gate.

Dismissal times and locations are as follows:

Information

With parental consent, pupils in Year 5 and 6 are able to self-dismiss. Due to safety reasons, if your daughter self-dismisses to the courtyard, this should only be for a short duration of time until you arrive to collect her. Please note that the courtyard is not a supervised area; pupils should not be left waiting there for extended periods of time, especially now that it is cold and dark after school.
