Dear Parents & Carers
It was an absolute pleasure to be back in school this morning after being away last week and to once again see the school full of energy, laughter and purposeful learning. Returning today reminded me just how much I missed the girls and staff and how special it is to be part of such a vibrant and joyful community where every girl is known, supported and encouraged to flourish.
Last week, I had the privilege of spending time inspecting another school as part of my work with the Independent Schools Inspectorate. Opportunities such as these always provide valuable professional reflection and the chance to engage with practice across the sector. I returned with ideas that will continue to inform our thinking, yet time away also offers an important moment to reflect on what defines daily life here at Channing Junior School. Our vision of Girls Enjoying Success is evident not only in academic achievement but in the confidence, curiosity and independence our girls demonstrate each day. Across the Junior School, inspirational teaching sits alongside a deeply pastoral approach, ensuring that girls feel safe, cared for and inspired to take risks, embrace challenge and develop resilience.
From Reception onwards, the girls benefit from specialist teaching, a broad and balanced curriculum and rich opportunities beyond the classroom. Whether exploring woodland skills in Forest School, collaborating with older/younger House Buddies, contributing through leadership roles such as School Council or House Captains, or discovering new passions through our extensive clubs programme, the girls develop a strong sense of belonging and ownership within the school community. Kindness, respect and empathy are not simply spoken about but lived through the Channing Promise and the Channing Characters which guide the girls as they grow both academically and personally. Walking through the corridors this morning and seeing the girls so engaged, curious and joyful was a wonderful reminder of the purposeful and happy environment that characterises our Junior School.
There is much to look forward to this week and I am particularly excited for the Year 6 performances of Oliver! taking place over two evenings. The girls and staff have been working incredibly hard in rehearsals and the anticipation across Year 6 is palpable. Productions such as these are a highlight of the Junior School journey, bringing together creativity, teamwork and confidence while creating memories the girls will carry with them long after they leave us. I very much look forward to seeing them shine on stage.
The coming days also provide wonderful opportunities to celebrate learning, culture and community together. Warmest wishes to all families celebrating Purim, a joyful festival of community and celebration. We also extend our good wishes to those marking Hola Mohalla, celebrating courage, unity and service, and to families celebrating Holi, the vibrant festival of colour symbolising joy, renewal and hope. These occasions enrich our shared community and help deepen the girls’ understanding of the diverse world in which they live.
Excitement is already building for World Book Day this week; always one of the most eagerly anticipated moments in the school calendar. The creativity, imagination and love of storytelling that emerge on this day perfectly reflect our commitment to nurturing curiosity and a lifelong love of learning. We also look forward to marking International Women’s Day, an especially meaningful occasion within our all girls community, as we celebrate the achievements and contributions of women across the world and inspire our girls to recognise the limitless possibilities ahead of them.
Thank you, as always, for your continued partnership and support. It is a genuine privilege to lead such a joyful, caring and ambitious Junior School and to work alongside families who share our commitment to ensuring every girl grows, flourishes and enjoys success in her own unique way.
I wish you all a happy start to the week and look forward to the many moments of learning, creativity and celebration that lie ahead.
With warm wishes
Miss Dina Hamalis
Head of the Junior School
