Channing School’s Art Department is stepping out from behind the classroom door and into the gallery with a vibrant new exhibition celebrating the creative practices of its teaching staff.
Running from 19–24 May, 1pm–5pm, at Avivson Gallery, 49 Highgate High Street, London N6 5JX, the exhibition brings together work by Channing’s art and design colleagues across painting, collage, etching, installation, monoprinting and more.
The exhibition takes its title and spirit from William Ellery Channing’s words: “Every human being is intended to have a character of his own, to be what no other is, to do what no other can do.”
To accompany the exhibition, the latest episode of Chatting with Channing invites listeners into conversation with members of the Art Department as they discuss their own practices, the ideas behind the show and why it matters for pupils to see their teachers as active, working artists. The episode explores how the exhibition came about, the importance of creativity in an increasingly digital world, and the way artistic practice informs teaching at Channing.
Together, the exhibition reveals the depth of creative enquiry taking place within Channing’s Art Department. It also underlines a central belief of the department: that active artistic practice is essential to inspired teaching. In the podcast, our teachers reflect on how their own making helps them guide pupils with authenticity, resilience and curiosity, encouraging students to experiment, take risks and see mistakes as part of the creative process.
For pupils, families, alumnae and the wider Highgate community, this exhibition offers an opportunity to see the artistic lives of Channing’s teachers beyond the classroom.
