Year 9 historians explore global conflict in new journal
Channing’s History Department is delighted to publish its first Year 9 History Journal, an impressive collection of independent research inspired by this year’s History conference theme, Global Conflicts.
Following talks from distinguished historians and commentators, including Professor Richard Overy and Tim Marshall, a group of Year 9 pupils chose questions that sparked their curiosity and conducted their own detailed investigations. Their finished articles demonstrate ambitious thinking, careful research and a willingness to engage with complex and sometimes controversial events.
The journal takes readers across centuries and continents. Pupils examine the impact of the First Crusade on trade and interfaith relations, the transformation of South Asia following the 1971 Indo-Pakistani War, and the effect of the Opium Wars on China’s domestic and global power. Other articles explore the Partition of India and Pakistan, the Suez Crisis, the bombing of Hiroshima, the Vietnam War, the Battle of Waterloo and the causes of the American Revolution.
The journal celebrates the intellectual ambition of our Year 9 pupils and reflects the curiosity, independence and thoughtful debate at the heart of History at Channing. It also offers a fascinating read for anyone interested in how global conflicts have shaped societies, borders and ideas.
Congratulations to every pupil whose work appears in this outstanding first edition. We hope the wider Channing community enjoys discovering their research and joining the historical conversations they have begun. Read the full journal below! Or download the file here.
