Junior School Curriculum

Find out more about the Junior School curriculum in the video below, you can also visit our Curriculum and Teaching and Learning pages for more info.

Why a Girls’ School?

The Department for Education’s data shows that girls in girls’ schools outperform their co-ed peers at both GCSE and A level. The percentage of girls selecting Sciences and Maths is much higher in single-sex schools than it is in co-ed schools. In girls’ schools, girls play more sport and for the longest time compared to any other schools and are five times more likely to play cricket and 30% more likely to play football.

Why an all-through School?

Channing Senior School is the natural progression for most girls in Year 6. The girls in the Junior School do not have to sit the 11+ entrance examination, which allows them to enjoy a broad and balanced curriculum, learning free from the pressure of being prepared for the 11+ tests. Our transition provision also supports the girls in their transition into Year 7 through activities such as a Transition Form Time hosted by Year 7 pupils from the Senior School, a Year 5 Taster Day at the Senior School and a Year 7 Welcome Afternoon, all designed to familiarise them with their new environment and build their confidence. You can view the Channing Senior School Virtual Open Day here to find out even more!

In fact, we do not teach to any tests. It is not part of our ethos and we know that this benefits our pupils academically, socially and emotionally as they move up through the Junior School, Senior School and all the way to Sixth Form.

But don’t just take our word for it.

In the 2025 summer public examinations, Channing was ranked 18th nationally for our A Level results. Of the pupils who sat A Levels at Channing School, 13 had been in our Junior School. They achieved 37.5% A*, 67.5% A–A*, and 95% A–B*. This compares very favourably with outcomes for the whole-school A Level cohort: 25.6% A*, 67.3% A–A*, and 95.1% A–B*. In short, Channing Junior School pupils outperformed their peers who did not attend Channing Junior School. And this happens every year! View full results and leavers’ destinations here.

Character Education (videos to share with your daughter)

Channing’s Character Education Programme is a unique initiative exclusive to our Junior School. This programme focuses on teaching children essential values and behaviors that contribute to a fulfilling and meaningful life. Through engaging lessons, activities, and thoughtful conversations, pupils learn to embody these important principles.

The videos below introduce the Characters and feature our Junior School staff bringing the Channing Characters’ stories to life. These videos are great to share with your daughter. To explore the programme in greater detail, visit our Character Education page.

Forest School

Forest School

We are delighted to have our very own Forest School at Channing thanks to our wonderful green setting. Each week, girls in Reception (from the second half of the Autumn Term), Years 1 – 4 have Forest School sessions in the natural wooded area at the bottom of the school grounds. This area is well-sheltered with tree canopies and is inhabited by a variety of flora and fauna! Find out more by listening to the podcast below with our Forest School Leaders and visit our Forest School page.

Wraparound Care and Wellbeing

Wraparound Care

At Channing Junior School, our wraparound care is dedicated to providing a nurturing and supportive environment, ensuring every girl feels valued and well cared for throughout her time with us. The school is open from 7.30am when Early Birds (our before school club) starts, until 6.00pm when Late Owls (our after school provision) finishes.

We have partnered with Let’s Leap, a highly regarded provider of wraparound care, sports and holiday camps, to offer an enhanced experience for our pupils and families. Let’s Leap is an experienced and trusted organisation and their recent successes, including an excellent Ofsted report, reflect their commitment to providing high-quality care and innovative programmes. For more information here.

Junior School Wellbeing

The happiness and general welfare of our girls is of prime importance and all members of staff are involved in their pastoral care. We encourage a safe and supportive learning environment in which everyone feels safe, comfortable and secure. Find out more about pastoral care at the Junior School here.
