This week, thirty of our Economists had the extraordinary opportunity to attend the Royal Economic Society Annual Public Lecture 2025 at Loughborough University, accompanied by Mr Matjilla, Mrs Bhamra-Burgess, and Mrs Bannatyne.
The day offered an inspiring blend of learning and exploration, beginning with a tour of Loughborough’s campus and talks on studying Economics at university, both there and elsewhere. Students also engaged with lectures on behavioural economics and game theory, offering fascinating insights into the ways economic thinking shapes decision-making.
The highlight of the trip was the main lecture delivered by former Bank of England Chief Economist, Andy Haldane on Communicating about the Economy. He emphasised the importance of ensuring all citizens have a fundamental understanding of economic principles and the workings of the economy, highlighting a “twin deficit” of trust and understanding between the public and policymakers.
Our students were fully engaged, and Frosya N asked an excellent question challenging Mr Haldane on whether pre-budget communication should be “watertight” or a “genuinely open consultation.” as shared in a recent Sky News interview. He said that he would rather such communication be watertight, akin to the approach of the Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee prior to interest rate announcements.
The day left our students inspired by the role economists play in shaping public understanding and policy. It was a remarkable experience, reinforcing not only their knowledge of Economics but also their curiosity, confidence, and engagement with real-world economic issues.
We are grateful to Loughborough University and the Royal Economic Society for hosting this fantastic event, and to our staff for guiding our students through a truly memorable day of learning.
