A Celebration Across Generations: Head Girls Tea

Some occasions feel special from the very outset, and our recent Head Girls’ Tea at Channing School was certainly one of them.

On a bright spring afternoon, we hosted a truly unique gathering, inviting every Head Girl from 1945 onwards. More than 30 women joined us, representing decades of leadership from the 1960s to the present day. Among them were our earliest attendee from 1963 and our current Head Girls, Ava and Siana, who had only just begun their tenure the previous week. With such a breadth of experience in one room, the atmosphere in Founders’ Hall was filled with warmth, laughter and a strong sense of connection.

While returning to one’s old school can sometimes feel daunting, the shared experience of leadership quickly brought everyone together. Conversations flowed easily, old friendships were rekindled and new ones formed. It was clear that the role of Head Girl had been taken seriously by all and had left a lasting impact on each of them. The opportunity for former Head Girls to spend time with current and incoming student leaders was a particular highlight, with exchanges full of curiosity, encouragement and mutual understanding. These moments beautifully reflected the continuity of leadership and spirit at the school.

The strength of the Channing community was evident throughout the afternoon. Among our guests were a current parent and a Governor, as well as a mother and daughter pair who had served as Head Girls in 1965 and 1987 respectively, with the daughter travelling from Spain especially for the occasion. We were also delighted to welcome former Headmistress Mrs Barbara Elliott, who clearly relished reconnecting with Head Girls from her time at the school. Watching these conversations unfold, full of fond memories and genuine affection, was a joy.

There were many moments of humour too, particularly as guests revisited handover notes from their time in the role. Past Head Girls smiled at their younger selves’ handwriting and turn of phrase, with one vintage instruction advising the student team to remember the importance of Friday morning coffee for the Headmistress, complete with a reminder to check the sugar and never forget a birthday. It seems some traditions were upheld with great care.

The afternoon concluded with a tour of the Senior School, including a visit to the first part of the new Brunner House. For many alumnae, it was their first time back since leaving, and there was a real sense of amazement at how the school has developed and grown over the years.

It was a truly memorable occasion, celebrating not only the legacy of those who have held this important role, but also the enduring bonds that connect generations of Channing women.
