Miss Hamalis’ Bulletin – Monday 1 June 2026

Posted: 1st June 2026

Miss Hamalis, Head Of Channing Junior School

Dear Parents & Carers

How is it already the final half term of the 2025/26 academic year? The year truly seems to have flown by and it is hard to believe that we are already approaching the final few weeks of school before the summer holidays. At the same time, when we pause and reflect, it is remarkable to see just how much the girls have grown and developed since September.

Of course, many of the girls have quite literally shot up in height, something that always feels especially noticeable at this point in the year. Even more wonderful to witness, however, has been the tremendous growth in their maturity, confidence and independence. Across the school, the girls have continued to challenge themselves, embrace new opportunities, develop resilience and show increasing kindness, empathy and responsibility towards others. Whether performing in assemblies, representing the school in competitions, supporting younger girls, leading initiatives or demonstrating quiet perseverance in the classroom each day, they consistently embody the Channing Character traits that are such an important part of life at the Junior School.

It has been particularly lovely to see how naturally the language of the Channing Characters has become embedded in the youngest girls’ everyday interactions. We regularly hear the girls speaking about showing empathy, resilience and curiosity, whilst celebrating these qualities in one another. Watching the girls grow not only academically, but also into thoughtful, confident and compassionate young women, is something we are incredibly proud of as a school community.

The final half term is always one of the busiest, most exciting and memorable parts of the school year and there is certainly a huge amount for the girls to look forward to over the coming weeks. The calendar is packed with opportunities for the girls to learn, perform, collaborate, compete and celebrate together. Highlights this half term include: the Year 4 Residential Trip to Ufton Court, the Year 3 Channing Camping Night, the Channing Association Summer Fair, the Year 5 Taster Day at the Senior School, the Year 6 Junior Entrepreneur Project Sales Week, the Year 6 trip to HMS Belfast, Sports Days, the Year 2 performance, the KS2 Tea Time Recital, the Sustainability Team Craft Swap Shop, the Year 1 Summer String Group Assembly, Moving Up Day, the House Buddy Summer Smoothie Social and the Year 6 Leavers’ Assembly. Alongside these events, the girls will also be taking part in numerous sports fixtures and competitions, continuing to demonstrate fantastic teamwork, determination and school spirit.

What makes this half term so special is not simply the number of events taking place, but the memories that are created through these shared experiences. These are often the moments the girls remember for years to come – cheering on their friends at Sports Day, camping overnight with classmates, performing on stage, visiting new places, working together on projects or simply spending time together enjoying the final weeks of the school year. These opportunities play such an important role in strengthening friendships, building confidence and nurturing the strong sense of belonging that sits at the heart of our Junior School community.

For our Year 6 girls especially, this half term is a particularly important and emotional one as they begin preparing for the next stage of their journey. We are looking forward to celebrating all they have achieved during their time in the Junior School and creating many special memories together before they move on to the Senior School and beyond. They continue to be wonderful role models for the younger girls and we are extremely proud of the confident, thoughtful and resilient young women they have become.

This half term also marks a personal milestone for me, as at the end of this academic year I will complete my eighth year as Head of the Junior School. Looking back over that time, I feel incredibly proud of all that our wonderful girls, staff and families have achieved together. It continues to be a privilege to lead such a warm, vibrant and ambitious school community and I remain deeply grateful for the ongoing support, kindness and partnership of our parents and carers.

As always, thank you for your continued support of the school and of your daughters throughout what has been another incredibly busy and successful year so far. I have no doubt that this final half term will be filled with energy, excitement, laughter and many memorable moments and we very much look forward to sharing them with you over the coming weeks.

With warm wishes

Miss Dina Hamalis
Head of the Junior School

Calendar & Events

Spears Food Bank Collection: Monday 8 June - Friday 19 June

Between Monday 8 June and Friday 19 June, we are asking the girls in Spears House to donate items to the Alexandra Wylie Tower Foundation’s (AWTF) food bank. The AWTF aims to support families in need with emergency food parcels, and provides hot meals and fresh fruit and vegetables to over 200 hundred homeless people in the local area.

The collection starts on Monday 8 June (next week) and will run until Friday 19 June. If your daughter is in Spears House, please ask her to place donations in one of the blue, labelled Food Bank collection bins in the courtyard. Although the donations will mainly be from Spears, all members of the community are, of course, very welcome to donate.

Please ensure all items are long-life produce, as regrettably, fresh items cannot be donated and that all donated items are within their sell by and use by date.

Many thanks in advance to Spears House for all your support for the final food bank collection of the academic year!

Sustainability Team, Craft Swap Shop & Lunchtime Workshop: Tuesday 9 June

On Tuesday 9 June, our Sustainability Team will be hosting their very first Craft Swap Shop during break time. This is a wonderful opportunity to declutter and give new life to unused supplies. Everyone is invited to bring in any unused craft kits, stickers or art supplies they no longer use at home and swap them for something new to them.

At lunchtime, the girls will also have the chance to get creative and take part in a crafting session using beautiful, natural objects collected by our Sustainability officers.

Key Stage 2 Recital Evening: Wednesday 10 June, 4pm

The next Key Stage 2 Recital Evening is on Wednesday 10 June at 4pm in the Music room. This is a chance for our pupils to develop their performance skills in front of a supportive audience. If your daughter has a polished piece ready to show off, please apply here by Thursday, 4 June. Please note, slots will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

Junior Duke Deadline: Friday 12 June

Please be reminded that the deadline for all of the girls to hand in their Junior Duke booklets is Friday 12 June. The Certificate Assembly will be held on Monday 22 June to celebrate their hard work and achievements. Thank you for your support!

Sports Day: Key Stage 2 ~ Friday 12 June & Reception & Key Stage 1 ~ Friday 26 June

Due to ongoing access issues at Stanhope Road, we are unable to drive vehicles onto the field. This restriction impacts our ability to provide essential facilities, such as additional shaded areas and sufficient portable toilets, for a full-scale event.

To ensure that all pupils will still be able to take part in Sports Day safely, we have adapted the event as follows:

Friday 12 June: Key Stage 2 – Stanhope Road

Key Stage 2 events will still take place at Stanhope Road but will be split into two sessions to manage site capacity:

Years 3 & 4 (Lower KS2): 9.00am – 10.15am
  • You will be able to drop-off at school or at the field on this date. Specific details regarding direct drop-off will be shared via Google Form by Form Teachers closer to the event.
  • Pupils will return to school with their forms to resume lessons, and can attend after school clubs and Late Owls as usual.
Years 5 & 6 (Upper KS2): 2.00pm – 3.20pm
  • Pupils will follow their usual timetable in the morning and head to the field after lunch, escorted by school staff.
  • Collection will be from the field at 3.20pm.
  • Only those attending Karate or Late Owls, will be escorted back to school by staff.
  • A Google Form for collection will be shared by Form Teachers closer to the event.

Special Treat: During lunchtime on 12 June, the CA has kindly arranged for every pupil to receive an ice cream from ‘Gussy,’ our long-standing Sports Day visitor. These will be enjoyed on the playground after lunch.

Friday 26 June: Reception & Key Stage 1 – School Grounds

Events for the younger girls will now be held on Founders’ Friday. These will be held at school to ensure appropriate access to facilities.

Reception: 8.45am – 9.45am
Years 1 & 2: 1.00pm – 2.00pm
  • Dismissal for Founders’ Friday will follow the afternoon session.
Information for Visitors

Founders’ Friday Open Classroom & Tea Party: Friday 26 June 3.00-4.00pm

We are delighted to invite all parents to our Open Classroom Event on Friday 26 June from 3.00 – 4.00pm.

This is a wonderful opportunity to visit your daughter’s classroom, as well as our specialist classrooms and explore the work she has produced in her books and share the learning she has enjoyed this year.

This is an informal, celebratory event where you will be able to browse books and projects, with your daughter guiding you through her learning and sharing what she has achieved across the year. It’s a fantastic chance to engage with her education and see firsthand how she has grown academically. In addition to classroom learning, specialist teachers will also be sharing highlights of learning in their rooms/spaces, and in the library, giving you a broader insight into the curriculum and co-curriculum.

Please note that all of the girls must be collected at their allocated dismissal time between 2.00 – 2.30pm, as no after-school clubs or Late Owls provision will be running on this day, to ensure the staff at school have adequate time to prepare the classrooms. We kindly ask that you collect your daughter at her dismissal time and then return to school for the event between 3.00 – 4.00pm. If you have time between dismissal and the start of the event, we recommend enjoying a visit to Waterlow Park or the surrounding local area.

Dismissal Times:

2:00pm: Reception (side gate)
2:10pm: Year 1 (main gate)
2:10pm: Year 2 (side gate)
2.20pm: Year 3 (main gate)
2.20pm: Year 4 (side gate)
2.30pm: Year 5 (main gate)
2.30pm: Year 6 (side gate)

Alongside the Open Classroom, Miss Hamalis will be hosting a Parents’ Tea Party with Mrs Brant (Deputy Head), Mr Davies (Deputy Head Academic), Miss Jackson (SENCo), Miss Kilanko (Learning Support Teacher), Ms Francis (Alumnae Engagement & Archive Manager) and Mrs Mitchell (Development Manager) in Fairseat Hall. This will be a relaxed opportunity to spend time together, meet other parents and enjoy tea, cake and conversation.

We very much look forward to welcoming you.

Donations: Help us Fill our New Reading Shed with Storybooks

Information

At breaktimes and lunchtimes, our girls enjoy a wonderful range of activities. Recently, some of the girls have shared that they would also value a quieter space where they can relax, read and enjoy a moment of calm during the busy school day. We always listen carefully to pupil voice and, as a result, we are delighted to be adding a beautiful new Reading Shed to complement our existing mindfulness area.

Before we officially open the shed, we would love to fill the shelves with a wide and varied collection of stories for the girls to enjoy. We would therefore be very grateful for donations of good quality, pre-loved children’s books that are ready to find a new home and a new reader.

If you have any storybooks at home that your daughter has outgrown, suitable for girls aged 4 – 11, we would be delighted to receive them. Donations can be dropped off at any time in the box underneath the Junior School office window.

This exciting new Reading Shed has been very generously purchased by the Channing Association, who will also be providing further books for girls of all ages to enjoy. We are incredibly grateful for their continued support and generosity.

Teaching & Learning

Supportive Learning Environment: Fidgets & Squishies

We are deeply committed to creating a supportive learning environment where every girl can thrive, feel comfortable and focus her best. To help us maintain this calm and productive atmosphere, we kindly ask that pupils do not bring their own fidget toys or squishies from home into school. While research shows that the right sensory tools can wonderfully support attention, educational experts highlight that they must function strictly as a learning or regulation tool rather than a toy. Many popular items from home can inadvertently draw visual attention or cause noises that distract both your daughter and her classmates. We want to ensure that every girl who truly benefits from a sensory outlet has access to the right support. To do this effectively and discreetly, the school has a curated selection of quiet, tactile tools specifically chosen to aid classroom focus without causing a distraction. If you believe your daughter has a specific need for a focus tool, and fidgets have not already been identified as a tool to support her, we warmly encourage you to contact her Form teacher or Miss Jackson (SENCO).

Forest School: what should my daughter wear?

All girls in Reception – Year 4 will participate in weekly Forest School sessions in our dedicated area. As the girls will be outdoors in all weathers – rain, hail or shine – we need to ensure they are appropriately dressed.
Layers are great for keeping warm under waterproofs. All clothing should be clearly named and brought to school in a named backpack.

Please ensure your daughter has a long sleeved t-shirt and leggings (or similar) to protect her skin from the plants and wildlife in the forest school area.

Please see the list of items required below. Most can be purchased from our uniform supplier, Uniform4Kids.

  • Waterproof jacket and waterproof trousers (separates are easier for getting dressed independently)
  • Named wellies (which will be left in school)/ Fleece lined wellies or snow boots for the colder months
  • Long sleeved top
  • Sweater/ hoodie/ fleece
  • Leggings or tracksuit bottoms
  • Warm socks
  • A thermal base layer, e.g. Merino wool
  • Hat and scarf
  • Gloves (preferably waterproof, not mittens)
