Miss Hamalis’ Bulletin – Monday 05 October 2026

Posted: 5th October 2026

Miss Hamalis, Head Of Channing Junior School

Dear Parents

This morning, Fairseat Hall became the studio for Harvest Live!: the show where food, gratitude and kindness are always in season. With our Head Girls, Ottie and Sofia, alongside Miss Wright (Assistant Head CoCurricular) and Miss Bones (Deputy Head Academic), we had breaking news, a live report from the ‘farm’, a distinctly unreliable British weather forecast, an advert for ‘Instant Harvest’ and even Who Wants to Be a Harvest Millionaire? Sadly, despite Miss Bones’ enthusiasm, the promised jackpot of one million carrots never quite materialised. Amidst all the fun was a simple question: how often do we stop to notice the ordinary things we have every day?

We began with a piece of toast. Before it reaches our breakfast table, someone has prepared the soil, planted and cared for the crop, harvested the wheat, transported it, milled it into flour, made the dough, baked the bread, packed it and delivered it. Something very ordinary suddenly seemed rather extraordinary.

We also thought about the patience and perseverance involved in growing anything. Farmers can prepare carefully and work incredibly hard, but they cannot control the sunshine, rain or wind. When things do not go to plan, they adapt and try again, which gave us a perfect opportunity to call upon Perseverance Squirrel and Resilience Robin.

And there was an important parallel for the girls: plants grow slowly – and so do we. We may not notice ourselves becoming a little braver, kinder, more independent or more resilient from one day to the next, but every time we try again, tackle something difficult or choose to be 10% braver, we grow.

Our most important Harvest message, however, came down to just three words: NOTICE. THANK. SHARE.

NOTICE: Notice what we have – and notice other people.
THANK: Be thankful for the everyday things we can so easily take for granted.
SHARE: And share when we can, because something small to us can mean a great deal to somebody else.

This final message is one we are putting into action through our Harvest collection for the The Alexandra Wylie Tower Foundation (AWTF), which will continue until Friday 9 October. AWTF supports families experiencing food poverty, and we are delighted that our Harvest celebrations can make a practical difference to people in our wider community.

If you are able to contribute, we would be very grateful for donations of long-life items such as washing tablets, tinned and canned produce, pasta and sauces, rice, spices, olive oil, juice, stock, cereals, sugar, salt, tea and coffee. Please ensure that all food is within its sell-by and use-by dates, as AWTF is unable to distribute fresh or expired produce. Donations can be placed in the blue labelled Food Bank collection bins in the courtyard at the front of school.

This collection gives us an important opportunity not only to support families who are struggling, but also to help the girls understand that social responsibility begins with noticing the needs of others and choosing to do something about them.

In assembly, I held up one donated item. On its own, it did not look like very much. But one joined another, and another, and then hundreds more. It was a wonderful visual reminder of what a community can achieve when each person decides, “I can help.”

Thank you to all our families who have already donated, and to everyone who is able to contribute before Friday 9 October. Through your generosity, the girls can see Empathy Rabbit and Responsibility Badger coming to life: making a difference does not always begin with a grand gesture. Very often, it begins with one small act of kindness followed by another.

Perhaps our Harvest challenge is one for all of us. The next time we see something completely ordinary: a piece of toast, an apple, our lunch or our dinner, stop for just a moment. Notice. Thank. Share. Happy Harvest!

With warmest wishes

Miss Dina Hamalis
Head of the Junior School

Driving & Parking

Information

It was with profound sadness that we learnt last week of the death of a Year 12 pupil from Highgate School following a road traffic incident. Our thoughts remain with the pupil’s family, friends and the entire Highgate School community at what is an unimaginably difficult time.

Thank you to the parents who have spoken to me or written to share their thoughts and concerns. I have collated these and will ensure they are shared as part of our whole-school work with colleagues in the Senior School, and through our ongoing discussions with Highgate School and other local schools, the Highgate Society, the Highgate Neighbourhood Forum, our local MP Tulip Siddiq and other community partners, as we work together to improve road safety in and around Highgate.

In light of this tragedy, we are asking every member of our community to take particular care when driving and parking at drop-off and collection. Please drive slowly and considerately, park legally and think carefully about the safety and visibility of children and pedestrians at all times.

In particular, please do not park at or close to the junction of Bisham Gardens and Highgate Hill. Cars parked here significantly reduce visibility for children, parents and members of the public crossing the road. Please also ensure that you do not block other vehicles or leave your engine running while waiting outside school.

We recognise how busy family life can be and have Early Birds available from 7.30am, alongside staggered collection times, to help ease congestion at the busiest points of the day. It is also heartening to see so many families choosing to ‘park and stride’, car share, walk, cycle or use public transport wherever possible, and I would warmly encourage everyone to consider these options when they can.

Above all, please help us to look after one another. Every journey to and from school should be a safe one, and we all have a part to play in making that happen.

Communication

Staff Contact Information

Please find the email contact details of the staff: JS Key Contact information. Please could we ask that your specific query is directed to the appropriate individual and anything of a more serious nature is directed to a member of the Senior Team. Please note that Miss Hamalis needs to approve all requests for absences so please send them via the Junior School Office: jsoffice@channing.co.uk.

In order to prevent unnecessary awkwardness and/or embarrassment, please remember to address members of staff by their title and surname.

Please be mindful that staff may not pick up emails immediately (teachers will, of course, not be checking emails when they are teaching, running clubs or supervising pupils at break and lunchtimes) and may choose to take time to investigate the matter before responding. However, they will endeavour to answer your queries within 24 hours. Please do not think that a lack of instant response means a lack of interest on the part of the member of staff.

Please note that staff are not expected to reply to emails outside normal school hours, weekends or during school holidays. If you have an emergency which needs to be dealt with before school next opens, please email: jsoffice@channing.co.uk. Please do not send communications or information to communication@channing.co.uk or info@channing.co.uk.

You can find the Channing Promise on the school website. This is something the whole school community upholds and underlines our values of respect, tolerance and inclusivity. We know you will be nothing short of respectful in your communications with staff and you can expect the same in return.

To get to know our staff a little better and put faces to names, you can find out more: Staff Biographies.

Social Media

We publish photos and films (depending on parental permissions) on our social media accounts. Follow us on: Channing Instagram Account, Miss_Dina_Hamalis Instagram Account and Channing Facebook Account to see what the girls are getting up to during the school day.

Calendar and Events

Harvest Festival: Collection until Friday 9 October

We will continue running a Harvest Festival collection for The Alexandra Wylie Tower Foundation (AWTF)  until Friday 9 October. In keeping with our community spirit, we would appreciate your generous donations. Please ask your daughter to place any donations in one of the blue labelled Food Bank collection bins in the courtyard at the front of school.

Suggested items for donations include: washing tablets, tinned/canned produce, pasta (and sauces), rice, spices, olive oil, juices, stocks, cereals, sugar, salt, tea and coffee. Please ensure all items are long-life produce, as regrettably, fresh items cannot be donated. Additionally, all donations must be within their sell-by and use-by dates, as AWTF cannot distribute expired food. We ask that you kindly check dates before donating.

We are delighted to help support such a worthy cause. We feel strongly as a school community that we should help raise awareness of food poverty and engage particularly with our pupils about social responsibility, but, most importantly, help those families who are really struggling.

Gala Auction ~ Ideas & Connections Welcome: Saturday 13 March

The Channing Association Gala Auction will take place on Saturday 13 March, raising funds in support of the Channing Social Impact Fund. As we begin planning the live and silent auctions, we would love to draw on the wonderful range of skills, businesses, contacts and connections across the Channing community.

At this stage, we are simply gathering ideas and possible leads, there is absolutely no expectation that you personally donate anything. You may know someone, work with someone or have a connection that could help us find an exciting auction prize, a memorable experience or an introduction to someone who may be able to help. We are looking for all sorts of ideas: perhaps a holiday stay, restaurant experience, theatre or sports tickets, art, a masterclass, a special family experience, something connected to a business, or even a unique “money-can’t-buy” opportunity. Sometimes the best auction lots begin with just one introduction, so even a small lead could make a real difference. If you have an idea or connection that might help, please scan the QR code below or complete our short form: https://forms.gle/vtUbpBc5aZ9q1qYYA

Alternatively, please feel free to get in touch with the following Channing Association Co-Chairs: Sarah Potts, Jo Glenn or Eileen Clarke.

Thank you so much for helping us explore the wider Channing network and create a very special evening in support of the Channing Social Impact Fund.

Further information about the Gala, including ticket details and booking links, will follow soon.
