Miss Hamalis’ Bulletin – Monday 12 October 2026

Posted: 12th October 2026

Miss Hamalis, Head Of Channing Junior School

Dear Parents

One of the things that makes Channing Junior School so special is the strength of the partnership between home and school. As parents, you are a hugely important part of our community and of your daughters’ experience here.

At the heart of that partnership is something very simple: we all want the best for the girls. We want them to be happy, to flourish and be the very best versions of themselves. We know that this happens most successfully when home and school work closely together. You know your daughters better than anyone; we know them as learners, friends and members of our school community. When we bring those perspectives together, sharing what we know, listening to one another and supporting each other, we can give every girl the best possible experience.

Good communication is fundamental to making that partnership work, and it needs to work both ways. We want you to feel informed about what is happening at school, to understand the thinking behind the decisions we make, to feel comfortable asking questions and, importantly, to know that we will listen. Equally, we value the opportunity to share our perspective, explain our thinking and have open and constructive conversations with you.

With this in mind, as I said at our Welcome Evening at the beginning of this term we are introducing a new series of Parent Forums. These will provide another opportunity for us to come together, hear from one another and strengthen the communication and understanding between home and school.

The forums will be held by Key Stage in Fairseat Hall and hosted by me, alongside members of our Junior School Senior Team (JSST): Mrs Brant (Deputy Head), Miss Bones (Deputy Head Academic), Miss Micallef (Head of Early Years & Key Stage 1), Mrs Kitsis (Head of Key Stage 2) and Miss Wright (Assistant Head Co-Curricular). Ms Fox (Director of Communications, Marketing and Development) may attend some sessions as an observer and to hear what you have to share.

We want these forums to be purposeful and genuinely useful conversations. When registering, you will therefore be invited to submit questions in advance. This gives us time to gather any information we need, speak to the relevant colleagues and provide thoughtful and informed responses. Where several questions relate to the same or a similar theme, we may group these together so that we can make the best use of our time together.

For these conversations to work well, they need to be built on trust, openness and mutual respect. Our Channing Promise was created by our pupils in both the Junior and Senior School as “a promise for everyone”, and it provides a wonderful foundation for how we engage with one another as a whole school community. It asks us to treat everyone with respect and kindness, to think of others and be aware of their feelings, and to create a supportive environment with freedom for thought and voice.

Those principles matter just as much in conversations between adults as they do between the girls. We will not always agree on everything, nor should we expect to, but we can listen carefully, ask questions, share different perspectives and, where necessary, challenge one another constructively.

Following each forum, we will share a summary of the key questions and responses with all parents, so that the conversation can benefit everyone, including those who are unable to attend.

If you would like to join us, please register using the relevant Google Form below, where you can also submit any questions you would like us to consider.

The partnership we have with you matters enormously to us. Strong communication builds understanding and trust and, in turn, helps us to work together for your daughters’ benefit. I hope these forums will give us a valuable opportunity to listen, talk and learn from one another, and to make an already strong partnership even stronger. I am looking forward to welcoming you and to the conversations ahead.

Finally, some lovely news to share with our community. Many congratulations to Miss Evans, who has welcomed her second baby girl, Cecily, into the world, and to Miss Baker, who has welcomed her third baby boy! We are delighted for both families and send them all our love and very warmest wishes as they enjoy these precious early days together. We look forward to hearing what Miss Baker decides to name her new arrival!

With warmest wishes

Miss Dina Hamalis
Head of the Junior School

Communication

Staff Contact Information

Please find the email contact details of the staff: JS Key Contact information. Please could we ask that your specific query is directed to the appropriate individual and anything of a more serious nature is directed to a member of the Senior Team. Please note that Miss Hamalis needs to approve all requests for absences so please send them via the Junior School Office: jsoffice@channing.co.uk.

In order to prevent unnecessary awkwardness and/or embarrassment, please remember to address members of staff by their title and surname.

Please be mindful that staff may not pick up emails immediately (teachers will, of course, not be checking emails when they are teaching, running clubs or supervising pupils at break and lunchtimes) and may choose to take time to investigate the matter before responding. However, they will endeavour to answer your queries within 24 hours. Please do not think that a lack of instant response means a lack of interest on the part of the member of staff.

Please note that staff are not expected to reply to emails outside normal school hours, weekends or during school holidays. If you have an emergency which needs to be dealt with before school next opens, please email: jsoffice@channing.co.uk. Please do not send communications or information to communication@channing.co.uk or info@channing.co.uk.

You can find the Channing Promise on the school website. This is something the whole school community upholds and underlines our values of respect, tolerance and inclusivity. We know you will be nothing short of respectful in your communications with staff and you can expect the same in return.

To get to know our staff a little better and put faces to names, you can find out more: Staff Biographies.

Parents’ Evenings: October

Parents’ Evening

All Form Teachers (Reception – Year 6) will host appointments with parents to share academic and pastoral news about how your daughter is settling into her new form early in the year: her mental and emotional wellbeing; her organisation skills (including homework); behaviour; and friendships. Form Teacher meetings, for the Autumn Term, will take place on:

  • Tuesday 13 October (online 4.00pm – 7.00pm)

These ten minute appointments will be in person (on the first day), and hosted by Schoolcloud online (on the second day). Appointments are booked on a first come first served basis.

We have six Specialist Teachers, who teach across the entire Junior School. As such, Specialist Teachers will be available to meet with parents of KS2 pupils only this term. Reception – KS1 meetings with Specialist Teachers will take place in the Spring Term. If you choose to make a booking with a Specialist Teacher, they will provide an academic overview of your daughter’s effort and attainment since the start of the academic year. Specialist Teacher meetings for KS2 pupils will take place on:

  • Tuesday 13 October (online 4.00pm – 7.00pm)
  • Wednesday 14 October (online 4.00pm – 7.00pm)

Parents’ Evening (Specialist Teachers) – Rescheduled Appointments for Wednesday 4 November

We would like to apologise for the technical difficulties experienced with SchoolCloud last Thursday evening and the disruption this caused to parents and specialist teachers.

As a result, all affected appointments will be rescheduled for Wednesday 4 November, at the original appointment times. The school will make these changes manually, so parents do not need to take any action or rebook their appointments. You will receive a notification through SchoolCloud confirming your rescheduled appointment times.

If the rearranged date or time is not convenient, please contact jsoffice@channing.co.uk to look at an alternative time, as there may be some remaining appointment availability with the subject specialists this coming Tuesday 13 October and Wednesday 14 October.

We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience and understanding. We hope these arrangements will minimise further disruption and provide families with the opportunity to meet with the specialist teachers.

The school’s specialist teachers are:

  • Miss Bolton (Year 5 & Year 6 ~ PE)
  • Miss Grayson (Year 3 & Year 4 ~ PE)
  • Mr Fellows (Year 3 –  Year 6 ~ Art & DT)
  • Miss Jimenez (Year 3 –  Year 6 ~ Spanish & French)
  • Mrs Lynch (Year 3 –  Year 6 ~ Drama)
  • Mrs Munro (Year 3 –  Year 6 ~ Music)

SchoolCloud will allow you to choose your own appointments for online Parents’ Evenings. Once you have selected an appropriate time, you will receive an email confirming any appointments that you have made.

School Cloud

The booking system will be open, for Tuesday 13 October and Wednesday 14 October, from 8.00pm on Wednesday 16 September  until 8.00am on the date of your meeting. Should you have any IT related issues or trouble logging in, please contact helpdesk_it@channing.co.uk, for any other queries please contact the School Office.

Future Parents’ Evenings - Contingency Arrangements

Following the technical difficulties experienced with SchoolCloud on Thursday evening, which unfortunately resulted in a number of appointments needing to be rescheduled, we have put a contingency plan in place to minimise disruption at future parents’ evenings.

Should SchoolCloud experience further technical issues, we will move appointments to Google Meet so that meetings can continue wherever possible, rather than families and staff spending time waiting for the platform to recover or having to rearrange large numbers of appointments.

If this becomes necessary, we will send an email to all parents with clear instructions and details of how to access their child’s teachers via Google Meet. Parents will be asked to join their meetings at their original scheduled appointment times. Teachers will admit parents individually to ensure that meetings remain private and confidential.

If the transition between platforms results in an appointment being missed, teachers will continue from the next scheduled appointment that can reasonably begin on time. Any missed appointments will then be rearranged separately.

We hope that these arrangements will not be needed, but having an alternative in place will help us minimise disruption and ensure that as many appointments as possible can go ahead as planned.

Thank you for your patience and understanding with this issue.

Micro, Mini & Junior Duke Award

Reception - Year 6

Girls from Reception to Year 6 are invited to take part in the Junior Duke Award at home. This encourages the girls to work through a range of tasks to earn a badge and certificate in the Summer Term. There are a maximum of ten challenges at each stage, some creative and others domestic.

If your daughter would like to participate in the Junior Duke Award; Please complete this form and £10 will be added to your termly bill. Please fill in this Google Form by 8.00am Thursday 15 October. Unfortunately, any late submissions can not be accepted.

  • Micro Duke: Reception
  • Silver Mini Duke: Year 1
  • Gold Mini Duke: Year 2
  • Bronze Junior Duke: Year 3
  • Silver Junior Duke: Year 4
  • Gold Junior Duke: Year 5
  • Platinum Junior Duke: Year 6

Miss Grayson and Miss Marshall (Junior Duke Leads) will support your daughter to participate if they are keen to develop skills outside of the curriculum; however, it is not compulsory for girls to participate.

Should your daughter wish to participate, her Duke Award challenge workbook will be sent home after the half term ready to begin working through her challenges independently. There will be termly breaktime meetings for girls to discuss challenges and progress and she will be presented with her certificate and badge in assembly in the final half of the Summer Term.

Autumn Term Clubs

Club Cancellations

Please find below the advance club cancellations for this half term that have been confirmed so far.

Advance cancellations typically occur due to whole-school events, subject-specific commitments or year-group activities, alongside other unavoidable staff (both internal and external) schedule changes. All advance cancellations will be listed weekly in the Bulletin.

Please note that when a club is cancelled in advance, pupils are expected to be collected at their usual end-of-school dismissal time or booked into Late Owls. Pupils cannot remain on school premises unsupervised between the end of the school day and normal club finish times.

If a cancellation occurs on the day, you will receive a text message as soon as the school is made aware. For same-day cancellations, your daughter may either be collected at her normal dismissal time, signed up for Late Owls or remain in Waiters for the duration of her usual club time. Please note that girls cannot be collected midway through the session: collection must be either at usual dismissal or at the end of the scheduled club time.

Channing Association

A Channing Tradition – Channing Seasonal Puddings!

It’s that time of year again! The Channing Association’s much-loved seasonal puddings are back and will be ready for collection in early December. 100% of the profits raised will go to the Whittington Children’s Ward. Every pudding is handcrafted by The Carved Angel which also supply Selfridges, Harrods, Bayley & Sage and other such reputable retailers. However, if purchased through the CA, you are supporting our chosen charities, and enjoying labels designed by Channing pupils from the Junior School and Y7&13 from the Senior School.

A huge thank you to all of the pupils for their wonderful and creative entries in this year’s Label Competition; we can’t wait to reveal the winning designs on Friday 16 October.

Our online Pudding Shop is now open: channingchristmaspuds.myshopify.com

All orders should be placed by Friday 6 November.

Thank you for your support.

Seasonal Cards

This week, forms will be distributed to the girls to take home for half term to design a seasonal card.

These will be due back into school directly to your daughter’s Form/Co Form Teacher on Monday 2 November (first day back after half term). You will be able to order the cards with your daughter’s design, and Miss Hamalis will also choose some of her favourite entries to become her seasonal cards too.

We are working directly with the company who prints them to ensure there are no delays in receiving the cards.

Fireworks

You may have noticed that we do not have a Fireworks event in our calendar this year. Unfortunately, Stanhope Road field is still not fit for large-scale use after site works last year. We have exhausted all alternative venue possibilities to no success. We are looking forward to getting back with a literal bang to Stanhope Road next year.

Grinch-Themed Winter Fair: Friday 27 November

The Grinch-themed Winter Fair is taking place after school on Friday 27 November. Tickets will be available next week. The school will be transformed into Whoville for a wonderful afternoon, where the girls and their families are invited to discover the wonderful whimsical world of The Grinch. The girls are invited to wear Grinch- or winter-themed clothes for the day. Please note that all after school clubs and wrap around provision will be cancelled due to the fair, and that all children (Channing and others) must be accompanied by an adult to the fair.

A SPARKLING EVENING. A LASTING IMPACT: Channing Gala Dinner & Auction ~ Saturday 13 March, Assembly Hall, Crouch End

Join us for a glamorous evening of delicious food, wonderful company and exciting live and silent auctions, with some truly special prizes and experiences to bid for. Whether you gather a whole table or come along to meet other parents, we’d love you to be part of it. Save the date, dress to impress and join us for a wonderful evening for a wonderful cause! More details and ticket information coming soon.

Gala Auction ~ Ideas & Connections Welcome: Saturday 13 March

The Channing Association Gala Auction will take place on Saturday 13 March, raising funds in support of the Channing Social Impact Fund. As we begin planning the live and silent auctions, we would love to draw on the wonderful range of skills, businesses, contacts and connections across the Channing community.

At this stage, we are simply gathering ideas and possible leads, there is absolutely no expectation that you personally donate anything. You may know someone, work with someone or have a connection that could help us find an exciting auction prize, a memorable experience or an introduction to someone who may be able to help. We are looking for all sorts of ideas: perhaps a holiday stay, restaurant experience, theatre or sports tickets, art, a masterclass, a special family experience, something connected to a business, or even a unique “money-can’t-buy” opportunity. Sometimes the best auction lots begin with just one introduction, so even a small lead could make a real difference. If you have an idea or connection that might help, please scan the QR code below or complete our short form: https://forms.gle/vtUbpBc5aZ9q1qYYA

Alternatively, please feel free to get in touch with the following Channing Association Co-Chairs: Sarah Potts, Jo Glenn or Eileen Clarke.

Thank you so much for helping us explore the wider Channing network and create a very special evening in support of the Channing Social Impact Fund.

Further information about the Gala, including ticket details and booking links, will follow soon.
