Miss Hamalis’ Bulletin – Monday 25 March 2024

Posted: 25th March 2024

Miss Hamalis, Head Of Channing Junior School

Dear Parents

As we approach the end of the Spring Term, we look forward to our beloved annual tradition: the Easter Bonnet parade. It’s always a highlight of the school calendar, and I anticipate a delightful and vibrant display of creativity and joy. I am eagerly looking forward to welcoming the girls into school on Wednesday morning, adorned in their homemade Easter Bonnets.

In preparation for the event, I took a moment to delve into the history of Easter Bonnets, much like Curiosity Fox would. It’s fascinating to discover that this tradition dates back to the 19th Century, symbolising the renewal and new beginnings associated with both Spring and Easter. In those times, attending church on Easter Sunday was not only a religious observance but also a social affair, marked by the wearing of new clothes, including hats. Women would acquire or adorn their bonnets with delicate embellishments such as ribbons, flowers and lace, adding an extra touch of elegance to their Easter attire.

As an intriguing aside, I stumbled upon a photo from 1892 depicting a group of people sporting Easter Bonnets on Hampstead Heath (see below). It’s remarkable to see how such customs have endured over time.

To provide the girls with further inspiration, we watched the beginning of a video of the Easter Bonnet Parade in New York. It’s a spectacular event that showcases creativity and imagination on a grand scale.

I am confident that the upcoming Easter Bonnet parade will be an unforgettable and delightful event for everyone participating. Your ongoing support is much appreciated, as it contributes greatly to the magic of our gatherings.

As this is the last Bulletin before the holidays, to our Christian families, Happy Easter! To our Hindu families, a colourful and joyous Holi and we hope you welcome Ugadi with full enthusiasm, hope and fervour! To our Muslim families, Eid Mubarak!

Wishing you all a lovely holiday!

With warm wishes

Miss Dina Hamalis
Head of the Junior School

i-art Competition 2024: Deadline Friday 19 April

A further opportunity for the girls to enter an art competition, this time inspired by the Paris Summer Olympics and its motto Faster, Higher, Stronger, Together. Artwork can be directly related to the Olympic Games but the words could also mean something to your daughters and can be linked to their lives, family or personal experience.

The girls are invited to paint, draw, make a collage, create a model – anything that stimulates and interests them, as long as it relates in some way to the theme Faster, Higher, Stronger, Together.

Please send your daughter’s entries to Mr Fellows (Art & DT Lead) by Friday 19 April.

First Maths Challenge

Year 2 - Year 4

This June, all pupils (aged 7-9 on Monday 17 June) in Years 2-4 will have the opportunity to participate in the online First Mathematics Challenge (FMC). The FMC is a school competition-style challenge which is run by the registered charity The Primary Mathematics Challenge.

The questions asked are not necessarily topics that have been covered in the Mathematics curriculum by this time, but they can create a great starting point and lead to discussions later in the year. The questions are not heavily reliant on formal mathematical knowledge, but can be solved by logical reasoning.

Whilst we wish to offer the opportunity to all pupils, we do not wish the FMC to cause upset for pupils who are developing their mathematical confidence and aptitude. We would not encourage pupils to sit the challenge unless they feel comfortable and confident. We recommend only encouraging pupils to sit the FMC if they feel they have shown above expected mathematical aptitude in lessons; focus when completing mathematical tasks in lessons and homework tasks; as well as the confidence and growth mindset to tackle unknown challenges.

We encourage you to discuss this stretch and challenge opportunity with your daughters at home over the holidays. Please contact your child’s Form Teacher, via email, by Friday 19 April should your daughter wish to enter and participate in the PMC. Form Teachers in Years 2-4 will review the list of entries and will also nominate girls who regularly complete extension classwork activities and who they believe will excel and enjoy participating in the FMC.

Throughout the week beginning Monday 17 June, all pupils in each Year 2-4, who have been self-nominated or teacher-nominated, will then sit the FMC online, during one Mathematics lesson within their timetable. Alternative work will be planned and supported for this lesson, for girls who do not wish to take part, or who are ineligible due to age. Additionally, in preparation for the FMC in June, Form Teachers in Years 2-4 will provide optional practice papers and answers to work through at home.
