Miss Hamalis’ Bulletin – Monday 11 November 2024

Posted: 11th November 2024

Miss Hamalis, Head Of Channing Junior School

Dear Parents

This week, we are marking Anti-Bullying Week with a heartfelt focus on the theme of ‘Choose Respect.’ Through thoughtful discussions, engaging activities, and a special school-wide display, we aim to inspire the girls to make kind, respectful choices in all their interactions.

To help the girls understand what it truly means to be respectful, we’re spotlighting one of our beloved Channing Characters, Respectfulness Hedgehog. Respect involves valuing each other’s feelings, opinions, and differences – even when we may not fully agree with them. We’re also sharing how respect goes hand in hand with kindness and empathy, beautifully represented by another of the Channing Characters, Empathy Rabbit.

Throughout the week, we will be exploring what it really means to ‘Choose Respect’ rather than resorting to unkindness or bullying. The girls are engaging in thoughtful conversations about questions such as, “What does respect mean?” and “How can we show respect to others in school?” We want them to understand that choosing respect helps create a positive, uplifting community, while unkindness and bullying can lead to feelings of sadness and isolation.

To remind everyone of the power of respectful choices, each girl is contributing to our ‘hand on your heart’ display. They’ll add kind words and images of respect to hand-shaped templates, which we’ll bring together to form a vibrant display across the year groups. This will serve as a lasting reminder of the values we hold dear at the Junior School.

Tomorrow, we’ll be celebrating Odd Socks Day, and we warmly invite everyone in our school community – pupils, staff, and parents – to join in by wearing odd socks. It’s a fun, simple way to embrace our individuality and celebrate the strength we find in our differences. This day carries an important message: that everyone deserves the freedom to be themselves, free from bullying.

We have also reminded the girls of the support available to them if they experience unkindness or bullying. Our Safeguarding Team – Mr Entwisle (Deputy Head), Mrs Brant (Head of EY & KS1), Miss Kitsis (Head KS2), and myself, along with all teachers, TAs, and our Welfare Assistant, are here to help. We want every girl to know she can always turn to a trusted adult in school.

On an exciting note, since publishing our series of storybooks based on the Channing Characters last Spring, we’ve been delighted by the many requests from families to purchase a set. We are thrilled to announce that the books are now available to order. Stocks are limited, so please don’t delay in placing your order, especially if you would like to collect them before the end of term and in time for Christmas or Chanukah. The complete set is available for £30 which will be added to your bill. Any profits will support partnerships and bursaries at Channing, helping to extend the gift of a Channing education to more young people. Please note, the deadline for ordering books before the end of term will be Friday 29 November.

If you would like to order a set, simply complete the Google form. And if it’s meant to be a surprise, let us know, and we’ll keep it secret so your daughters don’t find out!

You can also listen to the stories being read aloud here: Character Education stories.

As we all commit to ‘Choose Respect,’ let’s work together – pupils, parents, and staff alike – to make the Junior School a place where kindness, empathy, and understanding continue to flourish.

With warm wishes

Miss Dina Hamalis
Head of the Junior School

Calendar & Events

School Calendar

You can view all events for the year in the school calendar via our Parent Portal: SchoolBase login. Your calendar view should already be filtered to display the Junior School events and events which are specific to your daughter’s year group.

The ‘School Calendar Parent View’ button shows the complete calendar, which can be viewed by each month, week or day. Events also appear on the right-hand side of the home page under ‘Forthcoming Events’ and the monthly view of the calendar also appears at the bottom of the home page.

Sustainability Week

In line with Eco-Schools’ ‘Cut Your Carbon Month’, this week we are celebrating Sustainability Week.

Pre-Loved Book Sale for Charity: Tuesday 12 & Wednesday 13 November
Thank you for all the generous book donations brought to school. Tomorrow and Wednesday, we will be holding a pre-loved book sale during breaktime. Please remind your daughters to bring a small, named purse containing change (please do not send in bank notes) if she would like to donate or purchase a second-hand book. Books will be priced at 50p or £1. All funds raised will go to JUST ONE Tree, supporting global reforestation efforts.

Car-Free Friday: Friday 15 November
This Friday 15 November, we encourage everyone to travel to school as sustainably as possible – whether by walking, scooting, cycling, taking the bus or train, or using park and ride. Let’s come together to reduce our carbon footprint on “Car-Free Friday!”

Waterlow Food Bank Collection: Monday 18 November - Friday 29 November

As a reminder, we will be contributing to the Alexandra Wylie Tower Foundation’s food bank from Monday 18 November – Friday 29 November. If your daughter is in Waterlow House, please ask her to place donations in one of the blue, labelled ‘Food Bank’ collection bins in the courtyard. There will be three more collections running throughout the year, with girls in each House being asked to donate items. However, all members of the community are very welcome to donate at any time!

Suggested items for donations include: washing tablets, tinned/canned produce, pasta (and sauces), rice, spices, olive oil, juices, stocks, cereals, sugar, salt, tea and coffee. Please ensure all items are long-life produce, as regrettably, fresh items cannot be donated. Clean sauce pots (from your favourite takeaway), egg cartons and tupperware are also helpful donations as it helps the food bank volunteers to share out items.

Many thanks in advance to Waterlow for all your support!

Winter Celebration at St Michael’s: Friday 6 December 2.00pm

The Winter Celebration at St Michael’s Church, Highgate will be taking place on Friday 6 December at 2pm. Please find the link to tickets here.  Tickets are £5 to raise money for the Winter Shelter at Rosslyn Hill Chapel. Here is the page on Firefly to support the girls with learning their songs. A reminder that there will be no Mini Owls, Late Owls or after-school clubs running on this day. Dismissal will take place from the church.

Curriculum Talks Programme

We are delighted to invite all parents and carers to a series of curriculum talks led by our Subject Leads.

These in-person sessions will provide an overview of the curriculum in the following key areas: Mathematics, English, Music, PSHE as well as Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) in Reception. You will gain insights into what and how your daughters will be learning throughout this academic year and beyond. As this is a valuable opportunity to engage directly with our Subject Leads and to ask questions about the curriculum, teaching approaches and how to best support your daughter’s learning journey at home, the sessions will not be recorded. If you would like to attend one of more of these in-person evening talks, please sign up below using the linked Google Forms.

Schedule of Talks

We look forward to welcoming you and appreciate your ongoing support in helping your daughter achieve educational success, as we strive for all of the girls to be ambitious, realise their full potential, and become the very best versions of themselves.

Spring Term Club Programme

This week, you’ll receive an email with instructions for signing your daughter up for Spring Term clubs. We’re continuing to trial Google Forms for the sign-up process, and the email will include all necessary details. Please complete the sign-up before the deadline to allow clubs to be confirmed before the end of the term.

Communication

Staff Contact Information

Please find the email contact details of the staff: JS Key Contact information. Please could we ask that your specific query is directed to the appropriate individual and anything of a more serious nature is directed to a member of the Senior Team. Please note that Miss Hamalis needs to approve all requests for absences so please send them via the Junior School Office: jsoffice@channing.co.uk

In order to prevent unnecessary awkwardness and/or embarrassment, please remember to address members of staff by their title and surname.

Please be mindful that staff may not pick up emails immediately (teachers will, of course, not be checking emails when they are teaching, running clubs or supervising pupils at break and lunchtimes) and may choose to take time to investigate the matter before responding. However, they will endeavour to answer your queries within 24 hours. Please do not think that a lack of instant response means a lack of interest on the part of the member of staff.

Please note that staff are not expected to reply to emails outside normal school hours, weekends or during school holidays. If you have an emergency which needs to be dealt with before school next opens, please email: jsoffice@channing.co.uk. Please do not send communications or information to communication@channing.co.uk or info@channing.co.uk

Uniform

Optional Channing Backpack for Girls in Reception, Year 1 & Year 2

Following feedback and observations of the younger girls, we are pleased to offer the option for Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 girls to purchase a Channing backpack if they choose to. While optional, this may help your daughter carry her belongings more safely and comfortably. If your daughter chooses to use a Channing backpack, we suggest continuing to use the school book bag inside the backpack, acting as a folder for reading diaries, reading books and homework.

The backpack is available for £16.99 and can be purchased from the Uniform 4 Kids website here. We hope this option makes managing daily items easier for our younger girls.

Pastoral Tool for Key Stage 2

STEER Tracking: KS2 Assessments Running Monday 18 - Friday 22 November

Back in April, we introduced a wellbeing assessment and tracking tool for the girls in Key Stage 2 called STEER Tracking. This term, we will be running another set of wellbeing assessments in the week beginning 18 November.

Why did we introduce STEER Tracking?
It’s not always easy for us to know which pupils need our help as they don’t or can’t always tell us, even though we ask. Sometimes we only know something is wrong when we see a change in their behaviour or a dip in their learning; we think that’s too late. We want to know which pupils need our help, as early as possible, even if their needs are hidden or masked, and what we can do to help. STEER Tracking will enable us to give the right pupil, the right support, at the right time.

What does the assessment involve?
We will be asking all KS2 pupils to complete the short, simple and safe STEER online assessment up to three times each academic year. The assessment tracks how each pupil is steering or making choices in four areas important for healthy adolescent development…

Self Disclosure: I can choose when to share my thoughts and feelings, or keep them private
Trust of Self: I can choose to trust or question what I think or do
Trust of Others: I can choose to trust or question what others think or do
Seeking Change: I can choose to change things or keep them as they are

Some pupils need a little extra help to make the right choice at the right time as they can get a bit stuck. This can have an impact on their academic progress, friendships, wellbeing, and mental health. Knowing who these pupils are, early enough, means we can give targeted signposts to help them steer their choices better.

How can you help as parents?
As a school, we’ve had lots of training to help us interpret the assessment data and support our pupils. Though we won’t be expecting parents to make sense of the data, teachers will share insights with you so we can work together to proactively guide and signpost your child when they need it.  We know that when we work together, it has a positive impact on our pupils’ academic progress and wellbeing.

How can you find out more?
We’d be delighted if you wanted to find out more about STEER Tracking. There are three ways you can do this:

  • Take a look at the STEER website
  • Click on the links above to watch a short video about each STEER factor.
  • Come and talk to us! Mr Entwisle (Deputy Head) will be very happy to discuss this with you.

Activities, Competitions & Challenges for the Girls

Festive Card Post Boxes

This year, the School Council will create Festive Card Post Boxes for their form, encouraging pupils to write and send cards to each other. To promote sustainability, we kindly ask that these post boxes be crafted using recyclable or repurposed materials wherever possible. Please can each form’s School Council members work together to create the post boxes and ensure they are in school by Monday 25 November, ready to receive cards. There will also be a post box outside Miss Hamalis’ office, created by the Year 6 Head Girls, where girls can post cards to members of staff. We look forward to seeing the festive and environmentally-friendly creativity!

England Rocks: Mathematics Competition

We are participating in a friendly Mathematics competition, involving schools in England. The competition runs from 7:30am tomorrow to 7:30pm on Thursday 14 November online via https://ttrockstars.com/.

Pupils in Years 2 – 6 can play in any game mode with every correct answer to a multiplication or division question, earning themselves, their Form and the school a point. Year 1 pupils are welcome to play on the Times Tables Rock Stars platform; however, as they have not used this regularly and confidently in school yet, their game play points won’t be included in the competition. The Times Tables Rock Stars platform will calculate the Form average (the number of correct answers per pupil in the Form who play during the competition hours, subject to a daily 60-minute limit (see below)). Winning Forms (from Year 2 – 6) in the school and in the competition as a whole will be the ones with the highest average.

To support player wellbeing, there is a daily time limit of 60 minutes per player. In other words, each player can earn competition points for up to 60 minutes between 7:30am – 7:30pm each day between Tuesday 12 – Thursday 14 November. Once the player goes beyond 60 minutes of play on that day, they will still earn coins but will no longer earn points towards the competition. Please encourage and support your daughter(s) in Years 2 – 6 to the extent that it doesn’t cause high stress levels or impact on family plans.

Mindful Driving & Parking

Reminder

Unfortunately we have had several complaints over the last couple of weeks. Please be mindful of our neighbours, the local community and other members of the Channing community when you drive and park during morning drop off and afternoon collection by driving sensibly and parking legally. In order to help alleviate traffic and parking issues in the village, we offer Early Birds from 7.30am and have staggered collection times.

It is fantastic to see many of you organising ‘park and stride’ (parking a few roads down and walking), as well as arranging car shares if you live closeby to other Channing families.
