Miss Hamalis’ Bulletin – Monday 25 November 2024

Miss Hamalis, Head Of Channing Junior School

Dear Parents

You may have noticed the new pink Highgate Heritage plaque now proudly displayed on the wall outside our school building. If you haven’t had the chance to see it yet, I encourage you to take a moment with your daughter(s) during drop-off or collection this week to admire it together. The plaque commemorates two remarkable women, Matilda and Emily Sharpe who, alongside Reverend Robert Spears, founded our school in 1885.

Their vision was bold and forward-thinking: they sought to establish a school where the daughters of Unitarian ministers could receive a first-class education, one that would prepare them not only for university but also for the many roles women would take on in life.

To honour one of Unitarianism’s leading theologians, William Ellery Channing, they named the school after him. From the very beginning, Channing offered a broad and ambitious curriculum. Miss Matilda Sharpe frequently welcomed distinguished visitors, including the young inventor Marconi, to inspire and engage the pupils. Channing soon became recognised as an institution of the highest standards, and to this day, we draw strength from Matilda’s wise words: “Never forget life is expecting much of you and me.”

You might also find it fascinating to learn that Matilda Sharpe was a true Renaissance woman – an educational reformer, teacher, author and painter. Some of her artwork is even housed in the National Portrait Gallery!

In this morning’s assembly, Mrs Hughes reminded us of the importance of honouring our history as a girls’ school. She highlighted that we will soon be celebrating our 140th birthday in January. Mrs Hughes also spoke about the 150th anniversary of the Girls’ Schools Association (GSA), founded in 1874 by Frances Buss and Dorothy Beale to champion the best possible education for girls.

Together, we watched a segment of the inspiring GSA film, Captain of their ships, and reflected on some thought-provoking questions: What is a captain? What is their role? And what happens to a ship without one? I encourage you to watch the full film with your daughter(s) and engage in further discussion. As you do, carefully listen out for the voiceover by one of the Senior School Head Girls and look out for familiar faces, including last year’s Year 6 footballers, the Senior School netballers, and some Senior School pupils working in our Science labs. Don’t miss our Headmistress, Mrs Hughes, making an appearance too!

We urged the girls to embrace their inner captain, to work hard and to have fun in every aspect of their lives. Let’s continue inspiring them to steer their ships confidently, just as the Sharpe sisters envisioned all those years ago.

I’m looking forward to seeing the girls, staff and parents dressed up in Harry Potter or festive costumes for the Winter Fair on Friday afternoon. It promises to be a magical event. Please check the section below for more details. A heartfelt thank you to the wonderful Channing Association for all their hard work in organising this special event!

With warm wishes

Miss Dina Hamalis
Head of the Junior School

Waterlow Food Bank Collection: Monday 18 November - Friday 29 November

This is the final week to donate to the Alexandra Wylie Tower Foundation’s food bank. If your daughter is in Waterlow House, please ask her to place donations in one of the blue, labelled ‘Food Bank’ collection bins in the courtyard.

Suggested items for donations include: washing tablets, tinned/canned produce, pasta (and sauces), rice, spices, olive oil, juices, stocks, cereals, sugar, salt, tea and coffee. Please ensure all items are long-life produce, as regrettably, fresh items cannot be donated. Clean sauce pots (from your favourite takeaway), egg cartons and tupperware are also helpful donations as it helps the food bank volunteers to share out items.

Many thanks in advance to Waterlow for all your support!

Curriculum Talks Programme

Thank you to all of our Year 1 and Year 2 (Key Stage One) parents who joined us for the Mathematics and English talk last week. We hope you found it informative and gained some helpful tips on supporting your daughters at home. Please click on the links for the Mathematics and English presentation slides if you would like to learn more about how our Key Stage 1 girls learn and grow.

We utilise Read Write Inc. (RWI) Phonics to teach the girls the sounds in English, the letters that represent them and how to form the letters when writing. RWI Phonics includes reading books written using only the sounds they have learnt at each level (and a small number of separately taught tricky words). The girls will quickly feel confident and successful. Here you can find lots of free resources to support your child’s learning, including kits and flashcards to support your daughter’s reading development at home.

Miss McHard (English Lead) explained how the girls are using ‘Fred Fingers’ to help them to spell green words from the RWI scheme. To use ‘Fred Fingers’ with your daughter at home, first model how to pinch the sounds, referring first to this supporting video

Teachers also follow a process for handwriting through RWI which begins with the teaching of the letter families and then develops into the joining of handwriting. Attending parents requested a copy of the RWI Handwriting phrases to support further handwriting practice at home. Furthermore, should you wish to purchase extra resources to support your daughter to develop her hand muscle strength and handwriting at home, we recommend the following CGP resources:

Handwriting Daily Practice Book Bundle: Reception – Autumn, Spring & Summer Term

KS1 Handwriting Daily Practice Book Bundle: Year 1 – Autumn Term, Spring Term & Summer Term

KS1 Handwriting Daily Practice Book Bundle: Year 2 – Autumn Term, Spring Term & Summer Term

Our series of curriculum talks, led by our Subject Leads, continue this term and next. These in-person sessions, open to all parents and carers, will provide an overview of the curriculum in the key areas as outlined below. You will gain insights into what and how your daughters will be learning throughout this academic year and beyond. As this is a valuable opportunity to engage directly with our Subject Leads and to ask questions about the curriculum, teaching approaches and how to best support your daughter’s learning journey at home, the sessions will not be recorded. If you would like to attend one of more of these in-person evening talks, please sign up below using the linked Google Forms.

Schedule of Talks:

We look forward to welcoming you and appreciate your ongoing support in helping your daughter achieve educational success, as we strive for all of the girls to be ambitious, realise their full potential and become the very best versions of themselves.

Communication

Staff Contact Information

Please find the email contact details of the staff: JS Key Contact information. Please could we ask that your specific query is directed to the appropriate individual and anything of a more serious nature is directed to a member of the Senior Team. Please note that Miss Hamalis needs to approve all requests for absences so please send them via the Junior School Office: jsoffice@channing.co.uk

In order to prevent unnecessary awkwardness and/or embarrassment, please remember to address members of staff by their title and surname.

Please be mindful that staff may not pick up emails immediately (teachers will, of course, not be checking emails when they are teaching, running clubs or supervising pupils at break and lunchtimes) and may choose to take time to investigate the matter before responding. However, they will endeavour to answer your queries within 24 hours. Please do not think that a lack of instant response means a lack of interest on the part of the member of staff.

Please note that staff are not expected to reply to emails outside normal school hours, weekends or during school holidays. If you have an emergency which needs to be dealt with before school next opens, please email: jsoffice@channing.co.uk. Please do not send communications or information to communication@channing.co.uk or info@channing.co.uk

Uniform: Keeping Warm & Hair Accessories

Keeping Warm

As the weather turns colder, please ensure your daughter comes to school wearing either a Channing coat or a warm alternative in brown, black or navy. We also recommend a Channing Bobble Hat and a Channing Scarf  to keep her cosy. These items are available from our uniform supplier, Uniform4Kids. Thank you for your support in keeping the girls warm and comfortable this chilly season.

Hair Accessories

We have noticed an increase in the number of girls wearing claw clips to fasten their hair, particularly in KS2. These clips can pose a safety risk as they may cause injury during break times and in PE. Additionally, they are not as secure as hair bands, and the girls often need to re-fasten them throughout the day. To ensure everyone’s safety and to keep hair securely tied back, we kindly ask that only hair ties, bands and/or clips in the appropriate Channing colours (black, brown and Channing blue) are used.

To help prevent the spread of head lice, if your daughter’s hair sits below her shoulders, it must be fully tied back using brown, black or Channing blue hair ties, bands and/or clips. No nail varnish, or jewellery should be worn (unless for religious reasons) and only small plain stud earrings are permitted (small hoops or sleepers are not to be worn for safety reasons). Analogue and digital watches are permitted; whilst fitbits and smart watches are not.

Activities, Competitions & Challenges for the Girls

Young Art' Competition

Pupils are invited to enter the prestigious Young Art competition for a chance to exhibit their work at the Oxo Tower Art Gallery next Spring. Children can enter an A4-sized painting, drawing or print based on this year’s theme ‘Faces & Places’. The school will cover the entry fee of £3 (maximum of one entry per person) and proceeds go to a specific research project into childhood cancers at UCL Great Ormond Street. All artwork must be brought into school by Friday 10 January. Entries should have the artist’s name, year group, DOB and school clearly displayed in block capitals on the back. It is also a good idea to add a sentence explaining what is depicted overleaf. We have enjoyed success in this competition in previous years, so we cannot wait to see what our pupils can produce this time around.

We are therefore delighted to share with you the digital version of this year’s magazine which you can read here.

We are aware, however, that a number of families enjoy receiving physical copies of the magazine and some have kept every edition since their daughter(s) joined the School! To avoid printing copies that will ultimately go to waste, we are asking that families request a hard copy by midday on Wednesday 4 December 2024.

To order a printed copy of the school magazine 2023-24, please click here.
