Dear Parents & Carers
There has been one thing dominating the playground recently… skipping! Since our fantastic skipping workshops, the excitement across the Junior School has been absolutely infectious. Everywhere you look, girls are skipping before school, at breaktimes and at lunch, practising new tricks, creating routines together and proudly teaching one another the skills they have learnt. It has brought such a wonderful energy to the school and has been a real joy to see. In fact, watching the girls skipping so enthusiastically has reminded me so much of my own time at school and just how much I loved skipping as a child. It is lovely to see that same sense of fun and excitement still bringing children together today.
The workshops gave every girl from Reception to Year 6 the opportunity to take part in high-energy, engaging sessions tailored to their age group, culminating in a whole-school showcase which the girls absolutely loved. The atmosphere throughout the week was one of enthusiasm, encouragement and determination, with the girls constantly challenging themselves to improve whilst celebrating one another’s successes along the way.
What has struck me most is how perfectly the experience has reflected our Channing Character values. We saw Perseverance Squirrel in abundance as girls kept trying, even when a new skill felt difficult at first. Bravery Mole appeared as the girls volunteered to demonstrate routines in front of their peers and had the confidence to step outside their comfort zones. Empathy Rabbit shone through as girls patiently helped friends master a tricky move and Independence Owl was evident as the girls took ownership of practising and improving their skills during free time. It has been wonderful to see such a positive activity naturally fostering collaboration, resilience and confidence.
Skipping itself brings so many benefits. As well as being enormous fun, it develops coordination, balance, rhythm and cardiovascular fitness. It encourages the girls to stay active whilst also supporting concentration and mental wellbeing. Perhaps most importantly, it is something that allows children of all ages and abilities to experience progress and success quickly, building confidence and motivation. The sense of pride from the girls has been palpable.
We are hugely grateful to Miss Kitsis (Head of KS2) and Miss Micallef (Head of EY&KS1) for organising the workshops so brilliantly. Their careful planning ensured that every girl had the opportunity to take part and enjoy the experience. We would also like to thank all of the staff who supported the sessions throughout the week and helped make them such a success.
We would also like to extend a huge thank you to the Channing Association for the wonderful large Connect 4 and Jenga sets recently gifted to the school. These have very quickly become incredibly popular with the girls and it has been lovely to see girls of different ages coming together to play collaboratively at breaktimes and lunch. The games are already helping to create more opportunities for teamwork, communication and friendship across the playground and have been very enthusiastically received by all.
It has been truly heartwarming to see the playground so full of movement, laughter, teamwork and encouragement in recent weeks. Long may the skipping and games continue!
With warm wishes
Miss Dina Hamalis
Head of the Junior School
