Miss Hamalis’ Bulletin – Monday 8 June 2026

Posted: 8th June 2026

Miss Hamalis, Head Of Channing Junior School

Dear Parents & Carers

It was a wonderfully busy and joyful weekend in the Channing community, with the Year 6 Leavers’ Party on Friday evening followed by the CA Summer Fair yesterday. I will share more about both events in next week’s Bulletin, but I wanted to take this opportunity to say a heartfelt thank you to all the parents who gave their time, energy and enthusiasm to make these occasions such a success. The sense of community, generosity and support on display was truly special, and I am incredibly grateful for everything you do for the school. I would also like to extend a special thank you to Declan and Suge (caretakers) for all their hard work in helping before, during and after the Summer Fair. It was a fantastic event and a wonderful celebration of our school community.

In assembly today, we heard from our two Year 6 forms and their Junior Entrepreneur Programme (JEP) marketing teams about the exciting and innovative work they have been undertaking this term in their Design and Technology lessons. The girls proudly introduced the products they have designed and created, sharing their plans for launching and selling their products, ‘Clicky Cubes’ and ‘Sock Pupz’ this week. There was a wonderful sense of energy and anticipation in Fairseat Hall and it was clear that the rest of the school is already eagerly looking forward to supporting the girls’ ventures and purchasing their products.

The Junior Entrepreneur Programme, led by our fantastic Art and Design Technology teacher, Mr Fellows, is a highly engaging initiative that introduces children to the world of entrepreneurship through practical, hands-on learning experiences. The programme encourages pupils to develop an entrepreneurial mindset while working collaboratively to establish and run their own businesses. Throughout the process, the girls are given ownership of their ideas and are encouraged to think creatively, work independently and take responsibility for the many decisions involved in developing a successful enterprise.

Over the course of the term, the girls have been immersed in every stage of the entrepreneurial journey. They began by brainstorming and pitching possible business ideas before carrying out market research to identify which products would most appeal to their target audience. From there, they worked collaboratively in teams, recognising individual strengths and assigning roles and responsibilities across areas such as finance, marketing, communications, design, production and sales. The girls then moved on to designing prototypes, sourcing materials, calculating costs, managing budgets and refining their products in preparation for launch.

One of the most valuable aspects of the programme is the way it develops essential life skills alongside creativity and business awareness. The girls quickly discover that entrepreneurship involves far more than simply making and selling a product. They learn how to communicate effectively, negotiate ideas, solve problems collaboratively and adapt when challenges arise. They are encouraged to think critically, evaluate risks, manage their time carefully and respond thoughtfully to customer feedback. Throughout the process, they also gain an understanding of important financial concepts such as budgeting, pricing, profit and investment in a meaningful and accessible way.

At Channing, we believe it is important that our pupils leave us not only with strong academic foundations but also with the wider skills, attitudes and personal qualities needed to flourish in an ever-changing world. Opportunities such as the Junior Entrepreneur Programme allow the girls to apply their learning in authentic and purposeful contexts while developing confidence, leadership, adaptability and resilience. Whether or not the girls pursue entrepreneurial careers in the future, the ability to think creatively, solve problems, collaborate effectively and communicate ideas with confidence will serve them exceptionally well throughout their education and beyond.

The programme also aligns closely with many of the Channing Character values we seek to nurture across the school. Throughout this project, the girls have demonstrated resilience when overcoming challenges, curiosity when exploring new ideas, responsibility in managing budgets and deadlines, independence when making decisions and empathy when considering the needs and interests of others. It has been wonderful to see the girls recognising how these character qualities extend far beyond the classroom and can be applied in real-world situations.

I would like to thank Mr Fellows for the tremendous enthusiasm and encouragement he brings to the programme. His passion for creativity, design and innovation has inspired the girls throughout the process and helped create such a positive, dynamic and engaging learning experience. I would also like to congratulate Year 6 on the maturity, imagination and commitment they have shown throughout the project. They should be extremely proud of everything they have achieved already.

We very much look forward to supporting the girls’ businesses this week and celebrating their creativity, hard work and entrepreneurial spirit with the wider school community.

With warm wishes

Miss Dina Hamalis
Head of the Junior School

Calendar & Events

Spears Food Bank Collection: Monday 8 June - Friday 19 June

Between Monday 8 June and Friday 19 June, we are asking the girls in Spears House to donate items to the Alexandra Wylie Tower Foundation’s (AWTF) food bank. The AWTF aims to support families in need with emergency food parcels, and provides hot meals and fresh fruit and vegetables to over 200 hundred homeless people in the local area.

The collection starts today and will run until Friday 19 June. If your daughter is in Spears House, please ask her to place donations in one of the blue, labelled Food Bank collection bins in the courtyard. Although the donations will mainly be from Spears, all members of the community are, of course, very welcome to donate.

The AWTF are currently in need of the following items:

  • pasta
  • pasta sauce
  • washing powder (pods or powder)
  • dog food
  • cat food

Please ensure all items are long-life produce, as regrettably, fresh items cannot be donated and that all donated items are within their sell by and use by date. When adding food items to the blue bins, we also kindly ask that you place the lid back securely to prevent rain getting inside.

Many thanks in advance to Spears House for all your support for the final food bank collection of the academic year!

Sustainability Team, Craft Swap Shop & Lunchtime Workshop: Tuesday 9 June

On Tuesday 9 June, our Sustainability Team will be hosting their very first Craft Swap Shop during break time. This is a wonderful opportunity to declutter and give new life to unused supplies. Everyone is invited to bring in any unused craft kits, stickers or art supplies they no longer use at home and swap them for something new to them.

At lunchtime, the girls will also have the chance to get creative and take part in a crafting session using beautiful, natural objects collected by our Sustainability officers.

Key Stage 2 Recital Evening: Wednesday 10 June, 4pm

The next Key Stage 2 Recital Evening is on Wednesday 10 June at 4pm in the Music room. This is a chance for our pupils to develop their performance skills in front of a supportive audience. If your daughter has a polished piece ready to show off, please apply here by Thursday, 4 June. Please note, slots will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

National Children’s Orchestra: applications now Open

Applications are now open for the National Children’s Orchestra (NCO) 2027 programme. This is a wonderful opportunity for brilliant young musicians to develop their skills and make lifelong friends.

Auditions are conducted via video submission, and while children do not need to have taken a formal music exam, the NCO provides some friendly guidelines on playing standards. For children aged 8 and above looking to join the fun Orchestral Weekends, the recommended benchmark is around Grade 3+ for most instruments, and Grade 4+ for flute, violin and cello. For the older age bands auditioning for the residential Orchestral Weeks, the benchmarks rise gently from Grade 4 up to Grade 8+.

If your daughter would love to be involved, please do encourage them to have a chat with their instrumental music teacher first for a bit of advice and support. You can find all the details and full guidance in the official: Auditions Handbook on the NCO website.

Junior Duke Deadline: Friday 12 June

Please be reminded that the deadline for all of the girls to hand in their Junior Duke booklets is Friday 12 June. The Certificate Assembly will be held on Monday 22 June to celebrate their hard work and achievements. Thank you for your support!

Sports Day: Key Stage 2 ~ Friday 12 June & Reception & Key Stage 1 ~ Friday 26 June

Due to ongoing access issues at Stanhope Road, we are unable to drive vehicles onto the field. This restriction impacts our ability to provide essential facilities, such as additional shaded areas and sufficient portable toilets, for a full-scale event.

To ensure that all pupils will still be able to take part in Sports Day safely, we have adapted the event as follows:

Friday 12 June: Key Stage 2 – Stanhope Road

Key Stage 2 events will still take place at Stanhope Road but will be split into two sessions to manage site capacity:

Years 3 & 4 (Lower KS2): 9.00am – 10.15am
  • You will be able to drop-off at school or at the field on this date. Specific details regarding direct drop-off will be shared via Google Form by Form Teachers closer to the event.
  • Pupils will return to school with their forms to resume lessons, and can attend after school clubs and Late Owls as usual.
Years 5 & 6 (Upper KS2): 2.00pm – 3.20pm
  • Pupils will follow their usual timetable in the morning and head to the field after lunch, escorted by school staff.
  • Collection will be from the field at 3.20pm.
  • Only those attending Karate or Late Owls, will be escorted back to school by staff.
  • A Google Form for collection will be shared by Form Teachers closer to the event.

Special Treat: During lunchtime on 12 June, the CA has kindly arranged for every pupil to receive an ice cream from ‘Gussy,’ our long-standing Sports Day visitor. These will be enjoyed on the playground after lunch.

Friday 26 June: Reception & Key Stage 1 – School Grounds

Events for the younger girls will now be held on Founders’ Friday. These will be held at school to ensure appropriate access to facilities.

Reception: 8.45am – 9.45am
Years 1 & 2: 1.00pm – 2.00pm
  • Dismissal for Founders’ Friday will follow the afternoon session.
Information for Visitors

Parents and carers are warmly invited to attend the school-site events. However, please be mindful that space is limited. We kindly ask that you remain within the designated viewing areas, as the rest of the school will be in lessons and the girls will be moving between classrooms.

Founders’ Friday Open Classroom & Tea Party: Friday 26 June 3.00-4.00pm

We are delighted to invite all parents to our Open Classroom Event on Friday 26 June from 3.00 – 4.00pm.

This is a wonderful opportunity to visit your daughter’s classroom, as well as our specialist classrooms and explore the work she has produced in her books and share the learning she has enjoyed this year.

This is an informal, celebratory event where you will be able to browse books and projects, with your daughter guiding you through her learning and sharing what she has achieved across the year. It’s a fantastic chance to engage with her education and see firsthand how she has grown academically. In addition to classroom learning, specialist teachers will also be sharing highlights of learning in their rooms/spaces, and in the library, giving you a broader insight into the curriculum and co-curriculum.

Please note that all of the girls must be collected at their allocated dismissal time between 2.00 – 2.30pm, as no after-school clubs or Late Owls provision will be running on this day, to ensure the staff at school have adequate time to prepare the classrooms. We kindly ask that you collect your daughter at her dismissal time and then return to school for the event between 3.00 – 4.00pm. If you have time between dismissal and the start of the event, we recommend enjoying a visit to Waterlow Park or the surrounding local area.

Dismissal Times:

2:00pm: Reception (side gate)
2:10pm: Year 1 (main gate)
2:10pm: Year 2 (side gate)

Alongside the Open Classroom, Miss Hamalis will be hosting a Parents’ Tea Party with Mrs Brant (Deputy Head), Mr Davies (Deputy Head Academic), Miss Jackson (SENCo), Miss Kilanko (Learning Support Teacher), Ms Francis (Alumnae Engagement & Archive Manager) and Mrs Mitchell (Development Manager) in Fairseat Hall. This will be a relaxed opportunity to spend time together, meet other parents and enjoy tea, cake and conversation.

We very much look forward to welcoming you.

Save the Date: Welcome Evening: Tuesday 15 September (6 - 8pm)

Please save the date for our annual Welcome Evening which will take place on Tuesday 15 September from 6.00 – 8.00pm. Summer Term Reports

Information

Our Summer Term reports provide an overall picture of what your daughter has achieved at the end of the academic year. All reports will contain a written comment from your daughter’s Form teacher(s), outlining her progress, strengths and areas for development. You will be able to access your daughter’s report from 4.30pm on Friday 26 June via Firefly. For information about how to access your daughter’s report please see here.

Reception children will receive a written report with a comment outlining their progress across the wider curriculum, including PSHE, as well as when playing and exploring, thinking critically and during active learning. Grades will be used to identify academic achievement across the 7 Early Learning Goals and will reflect your daughter’s performance through classroom observations and activities.

In Years 1- 6, teachers will report on all subjects in the curriculum and provide separate report grades for Academic Achievement as well as Attitude and Engagement. Each subject grade will also be accompanied by a next step target to support your daughter’s continued progress.

The grades are:

  • Above Expectations
  • Meeting Expectations Securely
  • Meeting Expectations With Support
  • Working Towards Expectations

The reports will also show your daughter’s standardised score from English and Mathematics assessments taken in the first half of the Summer term. If you would like to know more about how to interpret these scores please read the information below.

What are Standardised Scores?
Standardised Scoring is a method used in education to allow pupils, parents and teachers to directly and easily compare performance in different subjects. Standardised Scoring converts each pupil’s score into a consistent scoring system, taking into account the number of marks available and the average score. The average score for each assessment is awarded a score of 100. Performance above the average therefore results in a Standardised Score higher than 100.

How do I interpret Standardised Scores?
A score of around 100 means your daughter scored in line with the expectations for this cohort in this assessment. A score of significantly above 100 means your daughter scored above expectations in this assessment. A score of below 100 means your daughter scored below the expectation in this assessment.

The below brackets give you a more detailed view of how your daughter performed in each of their assessments at the start of the Autumn term, relative to expectations:

Why is my Daughter’s Standardised Score Different from her Academic Achievement Grade?
Summative assessment scores provide a single snapshot into a pupil’s progress, but are not the only factor used to determine an Academic Achievement Grade. Your daughter’s performance in lessons, end-of-unit assessments, homework and independent tasks will all help her teachers to formulate their judgement. By taking all of this into account, teachers can better reflect the understanding that has been shown in each topic, rather than relying solely on formal test results. This approach allows for a more accurate and balanced picture of your daughter’s academic development.

Following the standardised assessments earlier in the term, Form teachers and Specialist teachers have been able to provide adaptive teaching in the lessons to ensure common misconceptions have been addressed. Your daughter will have gained targeted advice from her teachers throughout this term in response to these standardised assessments, as well as continuous assessment for learning opportunities built into their lessons.
