Dear Parents & Carers
As we approach the end of another busy and successful academic year, I have found myself reflecting on one of the things that makes Channing Junior School so special: our community. Schools are at their very best when staff, pupils and families work together in partnership, and I feel incredibly fortunate to lead a school with such a supportive, generous and engaged parent body.
For those who do not work in education and/or do not have children of school age, it would be easy to assume that schools begin to wind down as the end of the academic year approaches. However, at Channing Junior School, the opposite is true – we wind up! May and June are two of the busiest and most joyful months of the year, filled with Sports Days, performances, residentials, celebrations, transition events and countless opportunities for our girls to shine.
The week before last, I had the honour of attending two very special occasions: the Year 6 Leavers’ Party on Friday evening and the Channing Association Summer Fair on Sunday. Both events were filled with joy, laughter and togetherness. It was wonderful to see pupils, parents and staff coming together to celebrate all that makes Channing so special. Moments such as these remind me that while our girls are at the centre of all we do, it is the strength of the relationships around them that enables them to flourish.
I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to all the parents who gave so generously of their time, energy and enthusiasm to make these occasions such a success. The kindness, generosity and support on display reflected the very best of Channing.
The Year 6 Leavers’ Party was a particularly special occasion. It was a privilege to celebrate such a remarkable group of young women and reflect on the many ways they have grown during their time at the Junior School. Watching girls arrive as four-year-olds and leave as confident, compassionate and courageous young women is one of the greatest privileges of school leadership. Our girls truly embody our Channing Characters, and I could not be prouder of all they have achieved.
A very special thank you goes to the parent organisers of the Leavers’ Party. Events such as these require an enormous amount of work behind the scenes, and the evening was filled with thoughtful touches that made it truly memorable. From cocktails named after the teachers (my personal favourite being the Hamalis Botanical Bliss!) to the joyful atmosphere throughout the evening, it was a celebration that created memories our girls will treasure for years to come. Thank you also to Tali B’s father, whose dancing impressed me so much that I was delighted to present him with a special ‘Boys Enjoying Success’ certificate for the Best Dancing Dad of the evening!
I would also like to express my sincere gratitude to the Channing Association (CA). The CA plays an invaluable role in enriching school life and strengthening the strong connections that lie at the heart of our school. Whether organising large-scale events such as the Summer Fair, supporting year group socials, or providing thoughtful extras such as the delicious Mr Gussy ice creams enjoyed on Sports Day, the impact of the CA is felt throughout the year. Their tireless efforts create opportunities for families to connect, friendships to flourish and lasting memories to be made.
This year’s Summer Fair, ChanFest, was once again a tremendous success and a wonderful celebration of the Channing spirit. The Junior School was transformed into a vibrant festival with zorbing, hair braiding, go-karting, nail painting, inflatables, a tombola, laser tag and many other activities for our girls and families to enjoy. Combined with the delicious food and drink stalls, there was truly something for everyone.
Events such as these do not happen by accident. They rely on the generosity of volunteers and the dedication of so many people working behind the scenes. My sincere thanks go to the Channing Association, our parent volunteers and staff for creating such a memorable afternoon. It was a wonderful reminder of the strength, warmth and generosity that define the Channing community.
As we look ahead to the 2026/27 academic year, the Channing Association is now recruiting and confirming Form Representatives. Our Form Reps play a vital role in helping families feel connected and involved in school life. They support CA-organised events and activities, organise form and year group socials, and help coordinate seasonal gifts for Form Teachers. Through their work, they help ensure that new families feel welcomed, friendships are formed and our community continues to thrive.
If you would like to continue in the role, step into the role for your daughter’s form, or simply find out more, please consider getting involved. It is a rewarding way to contribute to school life and give back to a community that gives so much to our girls. New volunteers are always warmly welcomed and supported throughout the year by the CA Co-Chairs. If you are interested or have any questions, please email jschanningassociation@gmail.com.
As a school community, we continue to hold the Ziff family very close in our hearts following the heartbreaking loss of their one-year-old daughter, Celine, last year. This weekend, Luna (Y2) showed remarkable bravery and love as she took part in Celine’s memorial and decorated her gravestone with beautiful stones and gems.
Celine’s father has created a deeply moving tribute song, Big Little Life (Cece’s Song), in Celine’s memory. The family have kindly shared it with us, and all proceeds from streams and purchases will go to Noah’s Ark Hospice, whose support has meant so much to them.
We know that many members of our community will wish to listen, support this wonderful cause and join us in celebrating Celine’s beautiful life and enduring legacy. Celine continues to hold a very special place in the hearts of the Channing community and is remembered with great love by all who knew her.
Finally, with Father’s Day taking place this Sunday, I would like to wish all our fathers, grandfathers and the special father figures in our community a very happy Father’s Day. Thank you for the many ways in which you support, encourage and champion our girls each and every day. We hope you have a wonderful day with your families.
With warm wishes
Miss Dina Hamalis
Head of the Junior School
