Dear Parents & Carers
I hope you all had a lovely half term break and enjoyed some rest and sunshine. A warm welcome back to the final five weeks of the academic year, a time that promises to be a hive of activity here at the Junior School. With trips, transition events and end-of-year celebrations ahead, it’s shaping up to be a joyful and exciting month for us all.
This morning, I shared something particularly special in assembly with the girls and staff: the updated Channing Promise. It’s the result of a whole-school initiative that has taken shape over the course of this year. Earlier in the academic year, our School Councils, representing girls from Reception to Year 6 in the Junior School and pupils from Year 7 to Year 13 in the Senior School, were invited to help refresh the Channing
Promise. Rather than rewriting it from scratch, they thoughtfully revised it to ensure it continues to reflect the values that matter most to the girls themselves. These values lie at the heart of our happy, kind and inclusive school community.
The Channing Promise now reads:
Each element of the Channing Promise is brought to life through our beloved Channing Characters that help the girls connect with key values in an age-appropriate and meaningful way. For example, Respectfulness Hedgehog reminds us to treat everyone with kindness, Empathy Rabbit encourages us to notice others’ feelings; whilst, Responsibility Badger and Bravery Mole champion fairness and inclusion.
Together, these characters support our wider Character Education Programme, fostering empathy, resilience, curiosity, independence and courage – all of which are vital to helping each girl flourish both academically and personally.
The Channing Promise also reflects our Unitarian ethos, which celebrates the uniqueness of every individual and the strength that comes from diversity. Our values – to think freely, listen deeply and act kindly – are woven throughout the Channing Promise and the life of our school.
The girls were invited to reflect on which parts of the Channing Promise they already demonstrate well and which aspects they might focus on developing further. This process of self-awareness and growth is central to our shared vision of Girls Enjoying Success.
As part of this pupil-led evolution, I’m pleased to share that from September, we will also be introducing a more mature set of icon-style Channing Characters for our older pupils in Years 5 and 6. These will continue to reflect the same values but in a format that feels more age-appropriate and empowering.
It’s important to remember that the Channing Promise wasn’t imposed by staff – it was shaped by our pupils, for everyone in our community to follow: pupils, staff, governors and parents alike. When lived out day to day, it helps make Channing a truly joyful, caring and inspiring place to grow.
Thank you, as always, for your continued support in helping to uphold and model these shared values, especially as we celebrate the diversity within our community.
Chag Sameach to our families celebrating Shavuot, and Eid Mubarak to those marking Eid al-Adha later this week.
With warm wishes
Miss Dina Hamalis
Head of the Junior School
