Miss Hamalis’ Bulletin – Monday 15 September 2025

Posted: 15th September 2025

Miss Hamalis, Head Of Channing Junior School

Dear Parents & Carers

It was such a pleasure to welcome so many of you to our Welcome Evening last week. I hope you enjoyed spending time with your daughter’s year group team and finding out more about the year ahead. It is always so special to begin the academic year by bringing our community together. The presentations from the evening have been uploaded on to the Firefly Parent Portal for you to view. Please see further information below.

The start of term has been full of energy, excitement and joy. It has been a real privilege to welcome our new Reception girls and the few new girls who have joined other year groups. The warmth with which the rest of the school has embraced them has been truly heartening. One of my favourite moments so far has been watching the “older” girls – including our very proud Year 1s – helping our newest pupils to find their way around, offering reassurance at drop-off, sharing smiles in the playground and holding their hands at lunch. It is those small acts of kindness that make me so proud of the Channing community.

As parents, you play such an important role in our community and in your daughters’ success. The home- school partnership is at the heart of everything we do and evenings like this remind us just how strong and supportive those relationships are. When we work closely together, sharing insights, listening and supporting one another, the girls truly thrive.

We also talked about some of the exciting things ahead this year, including a new idea that came from one of you as parents. He said, “I know how much the girls love getting to know you at your infamous tea parties, so can we have one too?” At first, I thought he was joking, but the more I reflected, the more I realised what a wonderful idea it was.

This year, I will be hosting a Reception Parents’ Tea Party with the Senior Team: a relaxed opportunity for us to spend time together and get to know one another better.  Please save the date Friday 21 November, 8.15am – 9.00am. In the Spring Term, we will also host a tea party for parents of other year groups as part of our Open Classroom event on Tuesday 24 March 4.00pm – 5.00pm, so everyone will have the chance to come together. And of course, I will still be holding my much-loved tea parties this term for all our new Reception girls and the new girls who have joined us across other year groups. I cannot wait to share plenty of tea, cake and chatter with you all.

Another highlight of the evening was introducing families to The Learning Pit, a new initiative we are embracing this year to help the girls develop greater confidence and resilience in their learning. The Learning Pit helps the girls understand that real learning is rarely a straight path and that challenges, frustrations and mistakes are an essential part of the journey. By stepping outside their comfort zones and working through “the pit,” the girls learn to persevere, solve problems and develop a deeper understanding of new concepts. It aligns beautifully with our Channing Promise and the Channing Characters, encouraging the girls to take risks, ask questions and see mistakes as valuable stepping stones to success.

The Channing Promise underpins everything we do. It reflects our shared values as a community and guides how we care for ourselves, one another and the wider world. These values are brought to life through our eight Channing Characters: Resilience Robin, Perseverance Squirrel, Empathy Rabbit, Responsibility Badger, Bravery Mole, Independence Owl, Respectfulness Hedgehog and Curiosity Fox.

These are not simply posters on walls but qualities we see the girls demonstrating every day – in classrooms, on the playground and in the way they treat one another. We encourage you to use this language at home when you notice your daughters showing these characteristics, as it helps strengthen the partnership between home and school.

Our Channing Character Books are available to purchase. These beautifully illustrated stories bring our much-loved Channing Characters to life and help the girls understand and embody our core values. Many Reception families and those with new girls joining us across the school find these books especially helpful at the start of their Channing journey, as they introduce the language of the Characters in a fun and memorable way. If you would like to buy a set for home, you can do so here: Channing Character Book Order Form.

Finally, I was delighted to share the publication of our very first Social Impact Report. This celebrates how we are living our values beyond the classroom – widening access, strengthening our links with the local community and helping the girls understand their place in the wider world. I would encourage you to take a look and discuss it with your daughter.

As we begin this new academic year, I am reminded once again of the privilege it is to lead such a vibrant, caring and ambitious school community. Together, we are helping the girls grow in confidence and character, and supporting them to truly enjoy success in all its forms.

Thank you, as always, for your continued trust and partnership. I am so looking forward to the year ahead and everything we will achieve together.

With warm wishes

Miss Dina Hamalis
Head of the Junior School

Information

Please find the email contact details of the staff: JS Key Contact information. Please could we ask that your specific query is directed to the appropriate individual and anything of a more serious nature is directed to a member of the Senior Team. Please note that Miss Hamalis needs to approve all requests for absences so please send them via the Junior School Office: jsoffice@channing.co.uk

In order to prevent unnecessary awkwardness and/or embarrassment, please remember to address members of staff by their title and surname.

Please be mindful that staff may not pick up emails immediately (teachers will, of course, not be checking emails when they are teaching, running clubs or supervising pupils at break and lunchtimes) and may choose to take time to investigate the matter before responding. However, they will endeavour to answer your queries within 24 hours. Please do not think that a lack of instant response means a lack of interest on the part of the member of staff.

Please note that staff are not expected to reply to emails outside normal school hours, weekends or during school holidays. If you have an emergency which needs to be dealt with before school next opens, please email: jsoffice@channing.co.uk. Please do not send communications or information to communication@channing.co.uk or info@channing.co.uk.

You can find the Channing Promise on the school website. This is something the whole school community upholds and underlines our values of respect, tolerance and inclusivity. We know you will be nothing short of respectful in your communications with staff and you can expect the same in return.

Events

Individual & Sibling Photographs: Friday 19 September

On Friday 19 September, the girls will have individual and Junior School sibling photos taken. The girls can wear either their summer or winter uniform; however, we ask that siblings please wear the same uniform and for everyone to be smart and tidy with their hair fully back (if it is longer than shoulder length) with black, brown, white or Channing blue hair accessories.

All girls should come into school dressed in their school uniform. If they have PE or Forest School on this day, then they should bring in their PE or Forest School uniform in a separate bag and will then change into this as necessary, after their photograph has been taken.

Parents’ Evenings: October

All Form Teachers (Reception – Year 6) will host appointments with parents to share academic and pastoral news about how your daughter is settling into her new form early in the year: her mental and emotional wellbeing; her organisation skills (including homework); behaviour; and friendships. Form Teacher meetings, for the Autumn Term, will take place on:

  • Tuesday 7 October (in person 4.05pm – 7:00pm)
  • Tuesday 14 October (online 4.05pm – 7.00pm)

These ten minute appointments will be in person (on the first day), and hosted by Schoolcloud online (on the second day). Appointments are booked on a first come first served basis.

We have six Specialist Teachers, who teach across the entire Junior School. As such, Specialist Teachers will be available to meet with parents of KS2 pupils only this term. Reception – KS1 meetings with Specialist Teachers will take place in the Spring Term. If you choose to make a booking with a Specialist Teacher, they will provide an academic overview of your daughter’s effort and attainment since the start of the academic year. Specialist Teacher meetings for KS2 pupils will take place on:

  • Tuesday 7 October (online 4.05pm – 7.00pm)
  • Wednesday 8 October (online 4.05pm – 7.00pm – excluding PE)
  • Tuesday 14 October (online 4.05pm – 7.00pm)
  • Wednesday 16 October (online 4.05pm – 7.00pm)

One further evening date in November, after the half term holidays, will be released for KS2 appointments with Specialist Teachers only once the dates above are taken. If you wish to book an appointment with a Specialist Teacher, but notice that the appointments are all taken, please click to join the waiting list. Following this, you will be allocated an appointment in November which you will be able to amend on Schoolcloud up until the date of the meeting. Meetings with Specialist Teachers will be five minute appointments hosted on Schoolcloud and booked on a first come first served basis. The school’s specialist teachers are:

  • Miss Bolton (Year 3 & Year 5 ~ PE)

The booking system will be open, for all dates, from 8.00pm on Tuesday 16 September until 8am on the date of your meeting. Should you have any IT related issues or trouble logging in, please contact helpdesk_it@channing.co.uk, for any other queries please contact the School Office.

Curriculum Talks Programme

We are pleased to invite all parents and carers to a series of Curriculum Information Evenings, led by our Subject Leads and members of the Junior School Senior Team, in Fairseat Hall. These sessions will offer valuable insights into key areas of the school’s curriculum, including: Mathematics, English, Drama, and the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) in Reception. They are designed to help you better understand what your daughter is learning and how you can support her progress at home. Each evening will provide practical advice and an opportunity to engage directly with the staff who lead these subjects. If you would like to attend one or more of these sessions, please sign up using the Google Form linked below.

Schedule of Talks

We look forward to welcoming you and appreciate your ongoing support in helping your daughter achieve educational success, as we strive for all of the girls to be ambitious, realise their full potential and become the very best version of themselves.

Extracurricular Clubs

Autumn Term Extracurricular Clubs

Our Autumn Term Club Programme starts today, Monday 15 September, and will run until Friday 5 December (morning only).

As you may have seen in Miss Bodell’s (Secretary) email on Friday, we unfortunately experienced an unexpected technical problem which meant clubs could not be viewed on Firefly. We apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused. We know how important it is for families to have clarity when choosing clubs, and we’re pleased to let you know that the issue has now been fully resolved. You should now be able to view your daughter’s allocated clubs without difficulty. Thank you once again for your patience and understanding.

Your daughter’s timetable, including all extracurricular clubs, is now available on the Parent Portal, Firefly (please find instructions on how to locate it here). If a club does not appear on her list, it means she has been placed on the waiting list as the club is oversubscribed.

Please note that once clubs have started, we are unable to add or change club choices. For external clubs, fees will still apply if a place has been allocated but your daughter does not attend, so we ask that you check her  timetable carefully to avoid unnecessary charges.

If your daughter is unable to attend any of her allocated clubs, please contact Miss Radford at jsreceptionist@channing.co.uk.

Please note: if your daughter misses the same club for three consecutive weeks, her place may be offered to another pupil. For external clubs, the full block of sessions will still be charged.

If your daughter is taking part in any sports clubs, please note the following so that she is fully prepared for the club:

Sports clubs before school:

  • Your daughter is to wear her PE kit to school and for the club.
  • If your daughter has PE that day or a sports club after school, she can remain in her PE kit.
  • If your daughter doesn’t have PE or an after-school sports club, she will need to change back into her school uniform. Please ensure she brings this to change into.

Sports clubs after school:

  • On PE days, your daughter will remain in her PE kit for her sports club.
  • If your daughter is in Years 1-4 and does not have PE on that day, she is to bring trainers to change into for her club only.
  • Years 5 & 6 are welcome to bring their PE kit to change into before the club begins.

Hockey:

  • It is essential that pupils have their shin pads and gum shield for the session. The same changing rules apply as above. Shin pads can be put on over tights/ socks.

Gymnastics and Karate:

  • Your daughter must wear her PE kit, or a leotard/leggings for Gymnastics. Pupils should wear PE kit to school on the day of this club (optional leotard/karate suit can be brought into school to change into).

Ballet:

  • Leotards, tights and ballet shoes are optional.
  • Pupils will change at the beginning of the club, supported by staff, if you wish to send your daughter in with a leotard, tights and ballet shoes.
  • Pupils are encouraged to wear their PE kit if Ballet falls on those days for your daughter.
  • Your daughter is also able to wear her school uniform for the session.

Please contact Miss Radford, jsreceptionist@channing.co.uk, if you have any further questions about your daughter’s club allocations for this term.

Health & Safety

Lockdown & Fire Drills

As part of our regular health and safety procedures, we carry out both fire and lockdown drills regularly to ensure that all pupils and staff are well-prepared for a range of scenarios. These could include events such as a wild dog on the premises, an accident on the High Street, or even an emergency helicopter landing at school – situations we have, in fact, had to manage before.

These drills are an important part of keeping our school community safe, and we always conduct them in a calm, reassuring manner. The girls are wonderfully sensible and take the drills in their stride, which helps to build their confidence and understanding of how to respond in different situations.

In line with Junior School policy, we do not inform parents in advance when these drills are scheduled, as this helps us maintain a sense of routine and normality. Our staff are carefully briefed to explain the procedures to the girls in a way that is both clear and age-appropriate, ensuring they feel supported throughout.

The aim is to foster a sense of everyday safety without causing unnecessary worry. The focus is always on staying calm, following instructions, and ensuring everyone’s wellbeing. We avoid introducing distressing topics, such as terrorism or attacks, unless pupils raise these themselves. If they do, we handle such conversations with great care and sensitivity. Our emphasis remains firmly on practical safety measures.

If you have any further questions or would like support for your daughter, please do not hesitate to contact her Form or Co-Form Teacher.

Mindful Driving and Parking

Unfortunately we have had several complaints recently, in particular about parents parking at the junction of Bisham Gardens and Highgate Hill, as well as on the zigzag lines outside the school. This creates a real risk to parents and pupils, as well as members of the general public. Please be mindful of our neighbours, the local community and other members of the Channing community when you drive and park during morning drop off and afternoon collection by driving sensibly and parking legally. In order to help alleviate traffic and parking issues in the village, we offer Early Birds from 7.30am and have staggered collection times.

It is fantastic to see many of you organising ‘park and stride’ (parking a few roads down and walking), as well as arranging car shares if you live close to other Channing families.

Smart Watches

Guidance

In line with our uniform guidelines, please note that analogue and digital watches are permitted. However, fitbits and smart watches are not permitted to be worn in school. If your daughter in Year 5 or 6 requires a smart watch for self-dismissal purposes, she is required to hand it into the school office upon arrival to school, where it will be securely stored in a Yondr pouch for the duration of the day.
