Dear Parents & Carers
This morning in assembly, Mrs Brant (Deputy Head) and I, with the help of the Year 6 Head Girls, Agatha and Yaya, were delighted to announce the girls from Reception to Year 6 who will be taking on roles of responsibility this term and throughout the academic year. Whether as School Council representatives, Head Girls, House Captains, members of our Sustainability Team, Channing Character Champions, or in other leadership positions, these roles are an important and much-anticipated part of life at the Junior School.
From the moment the girls join us in Reception, we nurture in them a strong sense of ownership over their school community. Our ethos is simple yet powerful: every girl has a voice, and that voice matters. Leadership offers the girls the chance to put into practice the values they develop during their Channing journey: empathy, bravery, respectfulness, perseverance, independence, curiosity, responsibility and resilience. These characteristics not only shape who they are as individuals but also lay the foundations for academic success.
Taking on responsibility enriches the girls’ education in many ways. It builds confidence, independence and a readiness to speak out, while also strengthening important academic skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving and collaboration. Leadership encourages the girls to listen with care, to weigh up different perspectives and to share their own ideas with clarity and conviction.
At Channing, we know it is absolutely possible to combine inspirational teaching with a pastoral-first approach. We are proud to be both an academically ambitious and a kind, community-minded school. These leadership roles sit at the heart of our Character Education programme and reflect our overarching vision: to offer an academically ambitious and exceptionally supportive all-girls education, where Fearless Learners are nurtured to achieve their full potential and make a positive impact on the world.
For us, leadership is about serving others, inspiring change, and having the courage to stand up for what is right. This term, many girls are stepping into new leadership roles, proudly wearing their badges, and their names are now displayed on Trilby TV in the courtyard. We know they will rise to the challenge of being role models for their peers, and we hope they show that leadership is not reserved for a select few, but something every girl in the Junior School can embrace in her own way.
Many of you may have watched the women’s rugby with your daughters over the weekend and shared in the excitement of such an inspiring display of teamwork and determination. In assembly, we watched a short film, Red Roses, which captured not only the energy of the game but also the qualities that lie at the heart of leadership: courage, resilience, collaboration and pride. Just as the players inspired a nation, we hope our Junior School leaders will inspire their peers – showing that whether on the field or in the classroom, true leadership comes from lifting others, facing challenges with spirit and finding joy in working together.
Thank you, as always, for supporting your daughters as they grow not only into successful learners but also into thoughtful and compassionate leaders.
It was also wonderful to see so many Reception parents at last week’s Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Talk. We hope you found the session both informative and reassuring, with plenty of practical advice on how to support your daughter’s learning at home. You can view the slides from the session by clicking here.
We look forward to welcoming many of you to our upcoming sessions later this term, including Supporting with English from Home and Supporting with Mathematics from Home. A full schedule of Curriculum Information Evenings can be found below.
In line with our commitment to improving the School’s environmental sustainability, editions of the Channing School Magazine are now produced and distributed digitally. I am therefore delighted to share with you the digital version of this year’s magazine, which you can read here. Within its pages, you will find a vibrant chronicle of a year defined by curiosity, creativity and community – it truly is a wonderful read!
We are aware that a number of families enjoy receiving physical copies of the magazine, with some keeping every edition since their daughter(s) joined the School. To avoid printing copies that may go to waste, families are asked to request a hard copy by midday on Wednesday 4 November 2024. To order a printed copy of the 2024 – 25 School Magazine, please click here.
Finally, to everyone in our community observing Yom Kippur this week, we hope it brings you comfort, reflection and strength.
With warm wishes
Miss Dina Hamalis
Head of the Junior School
